Our trip to Lumbini, Nepal (4)

Next morning we had to leave Lumbini early in order to try to cross the border back to India as early as possible. I missed the nice morning weather there.

After we crossed back to India via the same check point, we stopped by at a new Thai monastery called "Wat Thai 960", to "visit" the facility (among the cleanest toilets in India, we believed). There are a lot of plants so those are nice toilets in a garden. They also have restrooms specifically for monk. (In the picture, airy roots of ornamental plants hanged in front of it to provide green atmosphere.)

The temple also provide some complimentary coffee, hot snack (newly fried Roti with condensed milk!) for us. Thanks. I also donated 1000 Baht to help in the land buying for a new Wat in Savatthi (Saravastri), in addition to another sum to help building additional clean restrooms for traveling Buddhists who mostly would cross the border at Sonauli.

Afterward, we went to an archeological temple of Kapilavastu (on the India side). This is another important place since the stupa there is the place where the British found remains of Lord Buddha with ancient inscription saying so over a century ago. A part of the remains was given as gift to King Rama V of Siam, and now they are at the Golden Mount's top in Bangkok. I was the one who recognize this fact so, after I told my monk master, he led our group to do the 3 round circum-walking and chanting around the stupa again.

We stop by at a resort to have a lunch. Hidden behind the vast poverty of Indians, this big mansion is a former palace of a Maharaja built in the colonial style. Nice place. They also have rooms for anyone who might want to spend the night there too. But I think we Thais felt a bit creepy although I heard westerners love to stay here a lot.

Our trip to Lumbini, Nepal (3)

Late afternoon, we went to Wat Thai Lumbini. It is also an official Royal Thai Buddhist Monastery, since its construction was funded by the government of Thailand and donation from the people of Thailand. That was a very good deed by "a" government and I 'd like to say Anumodhana with them (although I currently do not have positive attitude to that former Prime Minister, you guess who).

We first headed to a wellcoming Sala to have some complimentary drinks and snacks. (Well, we donated some money later.) It has a very beautiful ordination hall (Uposoth), designed by a prominent Thai architect, using a mix of Thai and Nepali styles. The long structure of the hall is supposed to represent the Himalaya mountain range and the white color is to represent the snow.

We went inside the Uposoth to make merit, where the presiding Buddha image is made of white jade (from Burma), and styled after the Emerald Buddha in the Royal Grand Palace in Bangkok. We were told that another replica of the white jade Buddha image, slightly larger, and decorated with gold, was given to HM the King of Thailand. I believe a major sponsor of the construction of the buddha images was Thai Airways International, since I noticed a logo in a sign nearby.

Some of us (me included) bough some Thai designed and produced "Baby Buddha" images from the temple. The money would go toward the activity of the temple. Since this temple is in the park where Lord Buddha was born, and there was a story that he immediately could walked 7 steps before proclaiming his "Asmiwaja", or the great utterance. So this Thai temple has a numeral sign code as 979, in Thai "Kao Jed Kao" means "walking 7 steps forward". Other temples under the same abbot has other codes, such as 960, and 980 (for the 60th coronation anniversary, and the 80th birthday anniversary of HM the King). (Really smart, your venerable.)

Our trip to Lumbini, Nepal (2)

At the Lumbini park, we visited the shell structure of the archeological site where a footprint was found, presumably to mark the exact birth place of Lord Buddha. Afterward to went to chant and meditate for a while before going to walk around the Ashoka pillar 3 times and wrap a gold laced yellow rope around it. (I had a nagged feeling about the expected quick disappearance of such a nice piece of cloth soon after it was put up there (and at other places as well) by us. Ok, it had been donated, so whoever took them down later we hope they 'd use it for a good cause.) There is a brass plate showing the translation of the inscription on the pillar. I think anyone can read its English text from this small picture.

Our trip to Lumbini, Nepal

We departed Kusinara on Oct 26 2009 when our chartered bus took us across the border to Nepal via Sonaoli border check point. There were hundreds of trucks waiting to cross border. I understand that tourist buses have privilege to cut the several kilometer long line of trucks to the front and took us passing through both Indian and Nepalese immigrations and cross the border in a relatively short time (<1 hr). We then went straight to Lumbini. Inside Nepal, I did not enjoy the scenery outside the bus windows much since there were a lot of garbages dump alongside the road, almost everywhere, so it did not look pleasant. I hope one day the Nepaleses would set up garbage dumps and collection service to beautify their country a bit. After we checked in to a hotel, we immediately rode rickshaws (oh, jeese, I have not used this word for decades) into Lumbini Park (the forest where Lord Buddha was born) in the afternoon.
We took group pictures with very lovely Nepalese kids who also visit the archeological site. Since they have no e-mail that we can mail pictures to them, so I think posting a picture here would be good enough. I hope sometime in the future some of them might stumble upon this picture in the cyberspace.

Kusinara

From Varanasi, we headed to Kusinara as Thais called its old name of 2600 years ago. The current name is Kusinagar. The road was narrow, and there were traffic jams along some intersections and railroad crossing. The bus could not drive fast. On a bridge crossing a river, there was only one lane and thus vehicles had to take turns.
We arrived at Kusinara in the afternoon. We went to the main stupa at Kusinara, at the spot where Lord Buddha (died) went to Nirvana 2552 years ago. We took a group picture in front of the stupa and went inside the main Vihara for chanting mantra and meditation. We then also conducted a 3 round clockwise walking around the main buddha image there. He is in the final resting posture. We felt as if we were just visiting the Buddha who just passed away only moment ago. While chanting I had some mixed deep feeling of pleasure and sorrow. My master (the monk) also brought a yellow and golden robe as a blanket for the image as a homage gesture. Later, we went out to visit the cremation site, about a kilometer away, where a stupa was also erected. We had an evening chant there until being chased away by darkness and mosquitoes.

After arriving at the Kusinagar hotel, we also walked out to a nearby Bodhi tree, marking the site where the remains of the Buddha after the cremation ceremony was divided by "Tona Brahmin" into 8 parts, one part for his own King and others to give out to emissaries send out by 7 other Buddhist Kings to get their share of the relics too. This is a "sacred site" rarely visited by Buddhists. We chanted there in the dark, and took pictures. There were unusual large number of "stars" seen in the pictures. Obviously, the "stars" are caused by particles which reflected the photographic flash light. However, interpretation on the nature of the particles is up to individuals. I can say that the weather at that time was quite nice and I did not feel the presence of dust or any particles. Afterward, we walked to the nearby Thai temple at Kusinara. This is an "official" royal temple erected by the King of Thailand and the Thai government. It has the same status as hundreds of official royal temples in Thailand. We conducted a chant inside the main Jedi (from the Pali word "Jetiya" = pagoda) there. We also donated some money and stuff there to monks and officials of the temple. It is a very beautiful temple, even at night.

Toward Varanasi

On October 24, 2009, from Sujata's house near Gaya, our group traveled in the afternoon in a new air-conditioned minibus to Varanasi. A portion of the road that we took was a 4-lane divided highway with toll plazas along the way. We stopped by to have an afternoon tea at a gas station, Indian tea with ginger added, that I heard they call it Kalam Jai, so we Thai called it in a similar sound but in Thai language as "Kamlang Jai" which means "enrouragement or moral support".

Of course, on a long road journey like this we need that refreshment as an encouragement, esp. when there is no clean restroom for us to use. We thus had the first chance to use "the largest toilet in the World" on this route, that is the open air, to relieve some internal pressure once in a while. For ladies, the tour company have some foldable personal tents to be used as mobile toilets for them. Yes, those tents are mobile, since it has to be moved after each lady is finished with the business and the next lady surely would not want to use the same spot as the toilet. Before this trip, I had read some Thai books about trips to India before and I know that Thai people had developed a convention of using the open air as toilets along the way, i.e. women go to the left of the bus, men go across the road to the right side of the bus, monks go the front of the bus, nuns go to the back side of the bus. :-) On our road journeys, we try to keep that convention, i.e. men tried to use the right side of the road and women tried to use the left side when possible, although that 's not always possible. It 's o.k. now since women now have tents to keep their privacy during such awkward situation. For me, I tried to manage myself quite well and I tried to have "heavy task" at the hotels, i.e. in the early morning before each day's departure and late evening after arriving at the new hotel. I only used roadside for "lighter task".

About an hour before we arrived Varanasi, we started to smell some pungent unique smell, probably due to smog. Varanasi, as Thais called Banarasi, is perhaps a 4000 years old city, or perhaps older than that. I have been to India before this trip, but never before to Varanasi. That day, I though that I felt I just reached and felt more of India.

That evening, we went to the Ganges to watch a ceremony in the evening of daily worshipping Suriya Dev, the Sun angel. I had seen that evening ceremony in a Thai documentary DVD before. There were thousands of locals on the river bank while hundreds of tourists (seen in the foreground in the picture) were floating in perhaps a hundred rented boats in the river snapping pictures along the way and during the ceremony. We stayed there to watch the sacred ritual for about half an hour before heading back to the hotel in preparation for tomorrow early departure to Kusinara (Kusinaga). I had some feeling about their ceremony. One remark though, quality of the the river in some area, esp. the pier that they cremate bodies was "not clean". It's amazing nevertheless : I have heard before a saying that bonfires on the Ganges bank at Varanasi never stop for thousands of years. We 'll be back to this area again in the next few days but in the morning.

Firefox

Back to Bodhgaya

We came back to Bodhgaya, while in the bus we tasted a local dessert called "Kadcha". Tipitaka mentioned it as a fried dessert in a story about a very thrifty millionaire who wanted to have it cooked only for him and not willing to share to others. So he had it fried on his seventh floor castle, but a Buddhist monk who had supernatural power still appeared in the air outside his windows and asked for it so he unwillingly gave it to the monk. The dessert looks like a crossed between fried crossant and folded curry dessert. It came in 2 flavors, sweet or salty. I understood then why the millionaire did not want to share his dessert to others and why, 2500 years later, it 's a popular dessert now.

Next morning we went to visit the place where Suchada (Suchata) 's house was. The mound is now covered with bricks and it now looks like an archeological stupa, perhaps in an attempt to lure tourists here. A mountain, Thais call Donkasiri, where Buddha spent his 6 years of physical torments during his quest to understand dhamma before enlightenment could be seen in the back behind our bus. We did not go there.

We visited a site near Niranjala river (Thais call Nerunchala) where Lord Buddha floated the gold tray after he consumed all the Payas (dessert made of rice, milk and butter) presented by Sujata on the day before the full moon night of May. He had not eaten for several days before. And he would not eat any food after the enlightenment for at least the next 49 days.

This locatlion is also where Buddha was given 8 bundles of long Gussa grass by a brahmin and he carried them across the river to where the Bodhi tree is (and now Bodhgaya) and used that to make a cushion for his sitting meditation on the enlightenment night (now celebrated as Vesakhabucha).

Nerunchala river is now mostly dried sand, with small stream running only afar in the middle, due to deforestation in the origin water source of this river.

Perhaps, the shrubs of grass we see in this picture are those of the Gussa grass.

Around the old Rajgir (5): Nalantha (old Nalanda)

We then proceeded to visit the oldest great Unversity in the World, Nalanda (Thais called it Nalantha) University. The guide said that its great coverage covers 7 x 3 sq.miles (approx 10 x 4.5 sq. km.). (But the dug archeological site covered only about 14 hectares, according to wikipedia). It was built in the old village where Sariputta (the right hand student monk of Lord Buddha, who was considered the most genius, and master of Abhidhamma) was born. Historians believed the University was built around 1600 years ago. It lasted around 800 years then destroyed by small muslim army. (I do not want to stir hatred here, but it 's a fact we should know.) Since no single person decided to fight, thousands of monks were slaughtered, many while in meditation. It was written that the temple complex was burning for months, esp. its 3 main libraries.

We could see several lecture halls in the area, with surrounding living rooms. This restored lecture hall is quite well preserved, with the platform in front of the class. That thousand years old hall gave me a kick to pose as a teacher there. :-)

Around the old Rajgir (4): Nalantha (old Nalanda)

Thai people like to stopped by to worship a big Buddha image made from black stone, called Luang Phor Dum (in Thai means the black father, and now the locals also called that in Thai name too). He is currently kept by local villagers outside the old Nalantha University. We went there and chanted mantra, meditated, and decorated him with gold-laced yellow robe. In the picture I also followed other Thais of sticking gold foil on him too. We also donated some money to help the locals in maintaining the small shack for the statue.
We had to walk a long way from the shack to the main road, where thousands or perhaps ten thousands came out to celebrate a festival to worship sun god (Suriya Dev) during that time causing a traffic jam on that small road.

Around the old Rajgir (3)

We stopped by at an often neglected Ajadsatru's Stupa. A lot of cow dungs are abundant in the lawn. This was the location where King Ajadsatru built a stupa to keep Rajgir's share of Lord Buddha 's relics that he obtained after the cremation at Kusinara (currently called Kusinagar). Perhaps Lord Buddha 's relics are no longer there but we stopped to chant mantra there anyway.

Around the old Rajgir (2): Weruwan

We stopped by at a government's park, where the old Weruwan (Veruwan = bamboo jungle) monastery was donated by King Bimbisara to Lord Buddha. This was the first Buddhist monastery so it 's a very important location. Too bad, local officials recently cleared a lot of bamboo trees away and thus we felt a bit disengaged of the original Buddhist name from the current physical appearance.
Another group of Thai monks and laypersons are already there, (seen in the picture as) walking around a Buddha image (Thaksinawat, i.e. walk clockwise, but I think Indians call it Parikam now). We stopped there to chant mantra, meditate for 20 min, and decorated the Buddha only image there with a gold-laced yellow cloth.

Around the old Rajgir (1)

After coming down from the vulture head peak, we briefly stopped by at the location where King Bimbisara of Rajgir was jailed and starved from foods (2600 years ago) by his son, King Ajadsatru (I spelled the way Thai people pronounced). From this area, the jailed King Bimbisara could look up to Buddha's shelter on the peak (arrowed) and possibly felt mentally comfortable while conducting his walking meditation to spend time in his cell. Without food he could live for a rather long time, until the new King sent a barber to make cuts on his feet so he could no longer walk, and eventually died. The story in Tipitaka also said that on that day, King Ajadsatru had his newborn baby and loved it very much. Soon he realized that his dad must have loved him so much too. But when the King ordered for the release of his dad, it was already too late to resurrect the former King's life. It 's a sad history.

Buddha's shelter at vulture peak, Rajgir

At the top of the Kitchakut hill, the original shelter of Buddha (Thais called it Mulakanthakudi) is located. There are stairs for people to climb up there. The shelter was small, only the size of around 3m x 3 m in size. New bricks were laid to show the location of the shelter and the ground was smooth covered with cement. I am not sure if that was how it looked like almost 2600 years ago. I supposed Lord Buddha lived in a much simpler way, even perhaps under a tree or a cave (like the Sugarakata cave). Again, it 's also possible that King Bimbisara built the Kuti for him up there.

Buddha would come down to the city for morning food alms, possibly by using the steep channel shown before the ladder was built.

Toward the vulture head peak

Walking uphill to the vulture head peak (or Kitchakut hill) via the Bimbisara road was a pleasant walk in October weather like this. I wore a jacket but did not feel hot. The ultimate goal is the original Buddha's Kuti (shelter) on the hill top. However, along the path there are several important points, including the location where Devatata pushed big stones downhill aiming to kill Buddha, a cave where Phra Mokalana meditated, and a cave (Sugarakhata cave, or Pig head cave) where Phra Saribut (Sariputta) became an Arahant. Pictures are shown below. I think the gold leaves pasted on these caves could probably be attributed by Thai people mainly. They came here to worship, to chant mantra, and to meditate.
Notice small stars inside the Mokalana 's cave.

Sugarakhata cave was an important place mentioned in Tipitaka, where Buddha was teaching to Thikanaka while Sariputta was fanning the Buddha nearby. After the teaching, Thikanakha became a Sodapun while Sariputta, already a Sodapun by that time, became an Arahant. Besides, Sariputta was a wise teacher, second only to Lord Buddha. Buddha taught Abhidhamma only briefly to Sariputta, but he then explained in-depth to his students. Since I am an Abhidhamma student, I consider myself a student of his as well.

Visit Rajgir

Rajgir was a big city 3-4 millennia ago. Thais also know its alias, Panjakhirinakara, which means the city surrounded by 5 mountains. Troughs in the ancient stone road created by carts thousands of years ago could be seen. The city was the capital of Magat kingdom.

After the capital was moved to Patliputra (Patna), after 2000 years, the city became a jungle, as viewed from the uphill road en route to "Kitchagut" hill (the Vulture head peak), where Lord Buddha 's Kuti was located. This clearly demonstrated the key principle of Buddhism, the 3 characters (Trilaks). Trilaks means everything (except Nirvana) has its start, its temporary existence, its end. A glorious city 3000 years ago is now visibly a forest. ( Well, I know that there is a (newer) small rural town in the name Rajgir located outside this mountain surround, but it is not the original Rajgir as Buddhists' regard.)

Main Viraha at Bodhgaya

The is the place almost 26 centuries ago where, under a Bodhi tree, Lord Buddha sat cross-legged with strong determination that he would not get up again unless he discovered the dhamma. He eventually had enlightment on the full moon night on the 6th month (May). The fourth generation Bodhi tree planted on the same spot can be seen on the left next to the tall Viraha. The Vihara housed a sacred Buddha image, called Luangphor Buddha Metta by Thais, on the first floor. A lot of people came here to meditate, to chant mantra, to walk clockwise around it three times (as a gesture to pay respect), or to pay homage by "Asdangkhapranot" (Tibetan style), which means having 8 points of the body touching the ground. Thais only do the 5 points touching the ground gesture now. Historically we did the Asdangkhapranot too, but not any more. I did not try that. My monk teacher said that he tried it once and after 3 times his body was sweating. More importantly, the (borrowed) bed would be quite smelly, if it's not your own. I was impressed by the presence of Buddhists from all over the World, including westerners. I feel glad for their discovered path of life.

International temples at Bodhgaya

There are a number of interesting temples at Bodhgaya. We briefly visited some of those before we went to the main Vihara. Tebetan temple was the first place we visited.

Later we went to visit the giant Buddha image, the Daibutsu.

From Bangkok to Bodhgaya (Gaya)

Recently I joined a small group of Thais to visit India's main Buddhist pilgrimage sites.
I took a direct flight from Bangkok's Suwannaphum (officially spelled as Suvarnabhumi) airport to Gaya airport in northern India. The direct flight on a Boeing 737-400 was less than 3 hr. I 'd say over 95% of the passengers in the half full plane were Thais. A number of vegetarians who informed the check-in counter also got their vegetarian meal on board. Nice service. (Nope. I 'm not a veggie.) I believe this direct flight is operated only during winter (cold) season. At this time the passenger load was low, possibly because it's just the start of the cold season (and thus suitable to visit India) as well as the time of economic down turn. October is also the month for Kathin ceremony (an annual ceremony of cloth donation for selected Buddhist monks to sew their robes) so a lot of devoted Buddhists like my friends are busy at temples elsewhere inside the country instead of going abroad to India.

We arrived at the Gaya airport just before 2 p.m. Indian time, 1:30 hr behind Bangkok time. We had been warned that there might be a small hassle to pass through many of the red tape at small Indian airport like this. This is the first airport I have encountered that boarding pass of everyone was rechecked after disembarking from the plane and just before getting into the terminal building. Amazing. Inside, I was then asked by someone in mixed English-Thai sentence asking for a pen so I gave him a 10 Baht gel pen in order to get into the country smoothly. Then there was a step when declared no. of luggage in the custom slips must match the number of things each of the passengers was hauling pass the terminal or one would be stopped at the exit door. India incredibly have officers at various steps to do all the unnecessary "tasks". Interestingly, I think our flight was the only one for the day.

We went straight to from the airport to the hotel in Bodhgaya (Thai called it verbally "Buddhagaya"), perhaps the main gateway to trace back Buddhist history in India.

We started by visiting some international temples first. It looked like those beggars and hawkers were mainly targeting (generous hearth) Thai tourists. It was amazed that many of them would try their best to annoy us so that they could get money. And some kids would not leave even after they successfully got some. Soon we learned our lesson on how to deal with them.

A picture of our plane taken at the Bangkok International Airport is shown below.

Loy Kratong

It was Loy Kratong day in Thailand yesterday, the full moon (15th waxing moon) night of the twelfth Thai month (yes, it 's November).

I think if one ask young Thais,
Why do millions of people went out in the evening to put down small candle-lit and incensed sticks-lit flower floats along rivers or canals ?
, I guess new generation people might answer that the festival 's just for fun. I think if they did answer like that they would probably be right. For hundreds of years, that how young men had chance to meet young women at a rare night festival like this. Some might say otherwise that it is chance in a year to pay tribute to the river angel (Phra Mae Kongka) for providing life line to peple's living. But I would say that explaination was based on Hinduism belief, not Buddhism's. I 'll put down Buddhists' view point down here, which hopefully would be more useful to Thai Buddhists.

  • Firstly for Buddhists, putting the float along the river 's mainly for worshipping the foot print of Lord Buddha who stamped his footprint at a place called Numtanatee (perhaps a river bank or an oceanside somewhere) almost 2.6 millennia ago.

  • Secondly, it 's to worship buddha's relics that had been floated at Ganges river in Varanasi by an Indian King after he discovered the relics in an old stupa near Varanasi.

  • Thirdly, the 15th waxing moon night almost 2.6 millennia ago was the day a prominent Arahant and Buddha's right hand premier monk, Sariputta (Thais called Phra Saribut), went to Nirvana (died). So this is also a remembrance for him.

Those are the reason why I and people in our group put down floats at the Ganges river at Varanasi 4 days earlier, while we were still in India.

update -----

(Revolutionary Wealth, by Alvin and Heidi Toffler, Thai translation edition, Matichon Press, 2008)

A new Thai book: Following Phra Ubali 's tracks to re-establish Buddhism in Sri Lanka

A small Thai paper back book has just been published. The title can be roughly translated as "Following the tracks of Phra Ubali to re-establish Buddhism in Sri Lanka".
This is a beautiful Thai book, published with a beautiful Thai fonts usually seen in the 18-19th century books, but NOT used in 99.99% of current Thai books. This book also contains lots of color pictures. The coverage is history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, which lead to the history related to the emissary led by Phra Upali (a royal title given to a senior monk in the Thai kingdom, not his real name), who was sent by King Boromakot of Ayutthaya to re-establish Buddhism in Ceylon some 3 centuries ago. The book cited many Thai and Sri Lanka references. It is suitable for Thai history buffs. (I am not one, just kind of interested in it.)

The author is a Thai Buddhist monk who is currently a Ph.D. student in Sri Lanka. I believe the retail price of the book was 170 Baht, but I paid 200 Baht as a donation to help support a new Stupa (a Buddhist pagoda) construction in Buriram, the home town of the author.

Nuclear ambitious neighbor for Thailand ?

Today 's column from Bangkok Post provided a break for English language newspapers' readers from local news about corrupted politicians, blatant public lies, and political rumours. The news provided an almost shocking evidence that Burma's military junta has been secretly building up its military nuclear capability to create a military balance with Thailand which has better conventional weapons.

(This blog recall the day 40 years ago when I was a primary school student in Bangkok watching global television broadcast on the first man on the moon event)
