Thai people consume less beef

Thai people are consuming less and less beef. Meanwhile, merchants from Vietnam came to purchase live cattle from NE Thailand. Price of live cattle thus increased from 15000 Baht to 40000 Baht each. Now price of beef increased from 180 Baht per kg up to 300-350 Baht per kg. More Thai people switched into consuming more pork or other cheaper foods.

I think we are witnessing another change in culture and way of life. Earlier, we consumed more fish and vegetables, then more pork and chicken and beef. Now beef (from cows and buffalos) will be less and less.

On Writing

Thai aviation museum

I just found a nice web-board posting a lot of air-plane pictures recently taken at the Royal Thai Air Force Aviation Museum.  I suppose air-plane buffs would love it.

I have not visited the place, near Don Mueang airport, but after viewing the page, I think those nice things are enough to would obviate my trip there for now.

Link is here.

Contemporary interests on Thailand

Prachachat Business newspaper published an interesting Thai interview of a British historian, Christ Baker, who recently co-authored a new edition of Contemporary History of Thailand, for both Thai and English versions. He talked about political changes in Thailand up to now. He has a positive view that more Thais have come out to voice their opinions in politics, which is the same trend with other countries in Asia, which have progressed much more. He thought that PM Yingluck is the last clone of former PM Thaksin, and his time in Thai politics is over. And he said that many institutions in Thailand need to change.  Here.

I think he has interseting good points.

Normally I am not interested in contemporary history. But now I think when I go to visit a bookstore later this year I 'll try to get his a copy of his book.

Problem with Future Orientation Index

Today, I stumbled upon the so called 'future orientation index' by chance, and retrieved a short 2012 paper which described it.

Upon browsing the paper by Preis et al (DOI:10.1038/srep00350, also available freely via Pubmed database), I found that the idea of using each country's queries of the years in arabic number, e.g. '2011, 2012', for future prospect is clever.

However, I noticed that it is without flaw: the authors disregarded cultural background of several countries. I should first say that I am not interested in trying to get the ranking of my country to be any higher, but as someone used to work as a reseacher, I could not avoid looking for ways to improve data quality.

Thailand, for example, is a Buddhist country, and people use mainly the Buddhist calendar (CE + 543) in their day-to-day lives. Not only that, Thais also use Thai numerals often interchangeably to Arabic numerals. If people from Thailand conducted searches for events or trends in their queries for next year's, they are also likely to search using the number representing Buddhist year, and might as well using Thai numerals when they are too lazy to swith the keyboard language.
Likewise, people in muslim countries could also be conducting searches using number for islamic year.

That's my 2 cents.

Model S

Cupertino, California

Problems learned from teachers for Thailand 's One Tablet per Child Project

I found a Thai news about reflections by Thai rural teachers on the Thailand's One Tablet per Child Project of interest. Their opinions should be good lessons for next Thailand government on how to implement better in the future, and perhaps to other countries as well.

From the news, Thai rural school teachers complained that tablets procured by the government and distributed to school children for free are troublesome. They are slow. The displays often froze. They are fragile, and if broken, sending for repair at far-away designated centers took a long time before getting them back, so the school often pay local shops to fix them instead.

The schools also lack large screens and digital projectors for their use, so teachers had to walk around the class a lot to instruct individual students. Most rural schools also lack budget to set up their school WIFI network so they mostly use the tablets off-lined which means rural students are limited to only the pre-loaded class materials. Teachers also believed that the tablet's screen size is too small for school children and would likely cause near-sightedness problem.

I am a bit surprised that they have not complained on the digital content, or e-textbooks. I am not sure if the content titles is adequate, or they are of better quality than the paper version at all.

I went to the Thai election although it is untimely and meaningless

I feel a bit dismay when I have to go to the ballot to serve a citizen's duty. I don't see an election now, costed around 3.8 billion Baht, as the right way to do, knowing that the present corrupt regime, masterminded by an escaped convicted tycoon that we want to get rid of,  is now hanging by its claws on a cliff. Their claws is this election to justify the staying of the acting Prime Minister in the executive seat.  Today is a history rerun for me, because I also casted the 'elect nobody' box the last time.

I know that a lot of Thai middle class people will not go to vote today. Some will just go to the poll station and tick the 'elect nobody' box in the paper ballot. They include a number of shop owners, doctors, teachers, business employees, retired government officials, housewives, etc. These people are not 'high class elites' at all, as often they were often mistakenly labelled by foreign news media. They are fed up with more systemic corruptions, and grabbing of national resources to be later sold out to foreign buyers.

This election will be meaningless. The puppet government wanted to show the World that it is a democratic government. In fact, it 's a dictatorial capitalism in disguised.  The dictator, of course, is an escaped convict for corruptions, who disguised himself as asylum seeker in a foreign country. When I say this I keep my mind neutral, I don't want to let down my mind to hate someone. I just feel pity for the country that has been damaged.

There is a hint that some people would soon file a complaint to the Constitution Court to decide if the election process is against the constitution, since many polling stations, mainly in the south, could not be opened, and some districts don't even have a single candidate.

I believe, with the present digital communication technology which makes the World looks smaller, more direct democracy is now possible. I see the need for people to engaging more into politics, not only in local level but also at national leve.  The only restriction will likely be Thai politicians who mostly came from private business with vast self-interests, who would try to clinge to the powers. They simply need to buy their way to get the blessing of 'election process' as the key to access public resources, nation's wealths, and more money for them and their cronies. I agree with many people that political reform in Thailand is badly needed

Remembering HTMS Thonburi

Today, 73 years ago (17 January 1941, B.E. 2484), 3 Thai Navy ships were destroyed in a small battle with an intruding French naval force near Koh Chang. Thailand lost 36 naval crews from that incident, including captain of the largest ship, widely remembered,

I feel thankful for them, and will meditate for the brave sailors and officers.

My view on Thailand's current situation

Today, Bangkok's traffic is paralysed by various blockades in many key intersections by people to press for caretaking PM to leave her post. Fortunately, in many areas, the traffic is very light, presumably many people avoid using their cars. I stay at home to ponder and write.

This blog is my personal response to negative-tone news from abroad concerning situation in Thailand. Foreign newsreporters don't deeply understand situation in Thailand. Many are also have their narrow views based on their corporate directive, or their government's benefit as hidden agenda.

When a person is healthy, no one would want to have a surgical removal of some of his internal organs, and spend a lot of time and money for that. But if a person has cancer, he needs to do just that.

The situation in Thailand currently is analogous to that metaphor. Thailand has had cancers in the past decades, but getting more serious in the past few years. The cancers for Thailand are corrupted politicians, some of which might not even be in the country. Some politicians acted like blood-sucking parasites, and some corrupted government officials who benefited from those, forming systemic tumors spreading throughout.  A number of people's view is this: the only way to remedy this is for the country to be operated upon immediately. (I do not necessarily agree with that view.) The ongoing 'surgical operation' is another painful experience for every conscious member of that body.

Democracy is a buzz word, most people around the World today prefer to use this word, even the socialists, the communists, use it, although they clearly interpret their method in their own way as democratic, often claimed to be 'more democratic' that others'. It is arguable whether which side is more democratic than others. But having an election alone does not guarantee the process of being democratic. I think the country will likely waste almost 4 billion Baht in a futile and fruitless election, if the care-talking government does not want to postponed the election until after an effective political reform is done so that measures against corrupt politicians are put in place. It will be a lot of money, yet the country has wasted hundreds of billions before, by selfish politicians on bad policies, e.g. rice pledging or pawning as it is called by Thais, that benefited mainly them and their associates and lackeys. Thai tax-payers are sick of puppet government's politicians which wasted hundreds of billions Baht to buy favors from voters and put big debt burden to our children for decades to come. They don't tolerate anymore. They want the change now.

In the mean time, I just hope that the situation will not be escalated into violence and situation come back to normal soon.
