Ceremony to pay homage to our teachers

Thai Vipassana books I just bought

With the same trip to Seacon Square, I stumbled upon and bought 2 books on Vipassana meditation (concentration) from a Dokya bookstore. Both of them are in Thai language, but one of them is more interesting than the other.

The (first) book was translated into Thai This was the was published by Siam Press (7th printing).
The book's title in Thai is หัวใจกรรมฐาน from the English edition entitled "The Heart of Buddhist Meditation". The original shorter version was in German called "Satipatthana, Der Heilsweg Buddhistischer Geistesschulung", publised in 1950.
The surprise for me was that the late author was German and his original name was Siegmund Feninger, born in Hanau (?) on July 21,1901, self-educated in Buddhism and later was ordained a Buddhist Monk in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) before WWII (1936)and
received a monk name of Nyanaponika Thera, equivalent to พระญาณโปนิกเถระ in Thai scripts.
He as as widely regarded in Sri Lanka, and passed away on October 19, 1994. The first edition was published since B.E. 2528 or 1985 but I did not know, actually I was still studying in the US at the time so naturally I could not see it.
The translator was Gen. Charn Suwanwipatch, M.D., and the reader and editor was the venerable Phra Promkunapork (P. A. Payutto), better known in the former royal title of พระธรรมปิฎก Phra Dhammapitaka and regarded as the most knowledgeable sophist on Tripitaka and Dhamma in Thailand (or perhaps the World),

The second book is วิปัสสนาทีปนี and was written by the late venerable พระพรหมโมลี (วิลาส ญาณวโร ป. ๙), and printed by Dokya Press. It is one in a series by the same author and is more of an elegantly-worded literary assay on Vipassana.
I think once I start reading this second book I must have strong concentration, think hard, in order to try to decipher meannings behind its analogies and beautiful and sophisticated Thai words inside.

I think I will enjoy both of them.

Cuckoo clocks in Bangkok

Last Saturday, I revisited Seacon Square, claimed to be one of the largest shopping malls in the World, to pick up a repaired cuckoo clock of my aunt's. Cuckoo Haus is the only shop I know in Thailand which sells cuckoo clocks, mostly from Germany, and repair them locally when needed. Previously there was a kiosk branch in Central Pinklao as well, which I used to go there but was closed, so I had to drive diagonally on the express way across the Bangkok city to get there. I guess, selling high-price specialty clocks might not be a brisk business in Southeast Asia after all. The shop's current owner and the repairman, Mr. Apichat, was quite cordial on the phone: I have never met him in person. He told me years before that this shop has changed its owner three times: my Black Forest cuckoo clock was bought by my mom from perhaps the first owner over 15 yr ago. Mr. Apichat has fixed my clock once and another of my aunt's twice. Repair cost was deemed reasonable, although each repair and spare-part change costed about 1/10 of a new purchase of a similar model. My old frail aunty was very happy the hear her clock sings and chimes again. I agree that having a functioning cuckhoo clock in a house is essential for us owners now: it makes the house lively and it hourly cheers up our feeling. Admittedly, cuckoo clock was noisy and bothersome in the beginning for me but gradually I started to love it. Without its singing and musical chime, together with revolving dolls, the house would be abnormally quiet and felt dull. My aunt feel the same. Therefore, paying high cost for each repair was worthwhile for me. I also absorbed all the repair costs of my aunt's clock out of my own pocket like before. Thanks to my lovely wife for not complaining.

What is the aim of Buddhda's Dhamma, or the core of Buddhism ?

Accoding to "Luang Phor" (Father) Pramote, he said
"... understanding of the body and mind, in order to eliminate suffering."

Yes, that 's the same as mentioned in the Tripitaka.

After years of practicing both Samatha and Vipassana, both types of concentration (meditation) helped me to start a grimpse (perhaps 1 % appreciation on) the exact meaning of the word "Buddha" or "the knowleadgeable one, the awaken one, the joyful one".
But it will likely take at least a few years (decades ?) before "I" could develope "my" mind to the level of "Sodaban", if "I" would ever be able to do it in this life at all.

* There is no real "I" or "my" in Buddhism.

Lack of IT understanding among Thai government executives ?

I think I have been making webpages for over ten years. I also used to be involved in making webpages for my former organization and my own job functions as well as one of my professional societies. Nowsday, with my current activities, I no longer have the luxury of free time to do those things. And those organization that I stopped helping them also no longer have web or online activities ever since. Even some of their domains expired.

I think current admin of those organizations, and perhaps a good fraction of upper government older executives are lacking modern vision on IT. Web and online activities should be integral part of their work and communal interacting processes. By failing to find someone to do the "dirty tecnical" jobs, and lack of gut to pay out and hire some people to do the web and lack of vision to use the online interfaces as a way to work and substitute most of the phone calls and face-to-face meeting show that a number of Thailand's older executives in the government sector still lack deep understanding and vision on the use of IT in their lives.

Thailand 's Mega-projects 2005-2012 (B.E. 2548 - 2555)

The Manager Daily newspaper reported on the Thailand Cabinet's approval of 1.7 trillion Baht investments, with over 555 billion Baht in it going to new and expanded electric train lines for Bangkok.
Here is my English transcription of a summary from the newspaper.

Lines/Termini | Investment (Billion Baht) | Year to finish (B.E.)
---------------------------------------------------------
Purple line 111.836 BB
Bang Yai - Bang Sue 2552
Bang Sue - Ratchaburana 2555
Blue line 75.003 BB
Hua Lumphone - Bang Khae 2555
Bang Sue - Tha Phra 2553
Orange line 82.688 BB
Bang Bumrhu - Bang Kapi 2555
Dark Red line 94.309 BB
Rangsit - Bang Sue 2551
Bang Sue - Hua Lamphong 2552
Hua Lumphone - Mahachai 2552
Light Red line 106.392 BB
Airport Link 2550
Airport Link extension 2554
Bang Sue - Thaling Chan 2551
Bang Sue - Makkasan 2552
Light Green line 55.561 BB
Ratchada - Lad Phrao - Sri Nakarind 2553
Dark Green line 29.948 BB
Saphan Mai - Bang Wa 2553

The exchange rate is about 1 US$ = 40 Baht : converting yourself if you want to know how much it would be in USD.

Linux stuff

I just found a link to a latest interview with Linus publised on a highschool website in his neighborhood. Good reading and several points to ponder about.

Star Wars and Buddhism

On Friday, I checked websites for major movie theater chains in Bangkok and found that Star Wars III with a suitable timing for me is shown at the Emporium in Bangkok.
In the evening, I thus hopped into Skytrain and went to see it. Costed me 160 Baht. Great fun.
I have known before that Lucas is a Buddhist (Tibetan or Vacharayana sect). I thus noticed from the movie that he clearly sprinkled in a lot of ideas from Buddhism into the story. About the Order of Jedi, which is sort of Sangkha but with a Sao Lin (Chinese martial art temple) style. Buddhists try to monitor (and thus sort of control) their emotion, and that is like the Jedi trying to not fall into the various emotions that will take them to the dark side. Etc.

Academic Books and Thai University libraries

I and my buddy went to a book sale at PB Foreign Books (Pathumthani) yesterday. It 's claimed to be Thailand's largest retailer of Biological and Medical books. So far we spent some 13K Baht combined on those on sales. There were Profs. from other Universities there as well.
Many of the books I got were good ones that would otherwise not read by anyone else in Thailand, except me. They were too cheap to let them go to trash, say some were 90% off. But many of newer ones were some 25% to 70% off. The company yearly organize a sale once a year, to clear old stocks and get some cash.

After visiting the bookstore, I remember my old bad feeling about Thai university libraries. I wish that more budget is allocated to the libraries so they could buy more books into their archive. Never mind that most of Thai students have poor English and would pass those books. But most Profs. would read them for sure. Science and technology are continuously changing and lacking updated books and journals would put the country in a lack-of-information state forever. Updated academic books (and journals) must be sufficiently availble to University libraries. As far as I know, when the Budget Bureau routinely gave only about 70% of the annual budget requested by each University, the first casualty of the budget insufficiency is the libraries. That why we might have the worst University libraries, perhaps among the "Tiger" countries.

News about future Mac on Intel 's CPU

The news yesterday about the announcement by Steve Jobs that Mac will move to Intel's Chips next year is a big news in the Internet and on today's newspapers, even in Thailand.

I think, if Apple would license OSX to other PC vendors as well, more people would have an alternative OS to choose on an afforable PC or notebook, and likely the revenue of Apple would soar. I hope this is in the business model and strategy of Apple. I personally would love to see that Apple grab at least 40-50 % of World 's market for OS. As for Windows, althought the market share might reduce in that scenario but its users will still increase due to more people have computers and legitimate (affordable) OS installed.

A book on Itappajjayata

I just digged up a book I have bough for almost 7 months but neatly sit in one of my several bookshelves.
The name in Thai is อิทัปปัจจัยตา or Itappajjayata, the natural law of causes and effects, which is the core principle of Buddhism.
The name is a shorten version of the full Pali word Ittappajjayata-Patijasamuppapatha.
As it turned out, it 's written by one of my former lady professors, Dr. Pairoh Dhippayathat, who long time ago quitted her Biochemistry Faculty career and turned herself into a respectable Buddhist nun, practicing Dhamma and meditation. She was a student of the late venerable Buddhadhasa Bhikkhu. (For readers : Buddhadhasa is the better known (pen) name of Inthapanyo Bhikkhu : Inthapanyo is the assumed Pali name after his ordainment into a monk, and Bhikku means Buddhist monk.)
I am still reading this one.

SE-ED bookstores and its stocks

I read recently that Grammy is going to buy up to 13% of stocks of SE-ED in the next few months. I have a weird feeling on this news. With almost 370 branches in Thailand, SE-ED is the largest chain of bookstores and book/magazine publisher in Thailand.
The name SE-ED itself was derived from the words Science & Engineering Education, back when the press was mainly focused on books in S&E while I was an undergraduate student some 30 yr ago.
If Grammy gets its way, the bookstores will sell more music tapes and CD from Grammy. As a bookworm, I hope that does not dilute out the quality of the bookstores.
About the stock aspect of this company, I used to buy SE-ED stocks before because it is a good company. Not much. A good bookworm should support his bookstore and publisher by buying some stocks, right ?
As it turned out SE-ED is a good chain of bookstores I love, always give discounts to members, and always give free plastic cover to all customers. However, in term of stocks, management of this company never cares of its stockholders, nor did it try to support their stocks' price in anyway.
They never came out to tell what a good company it is. Thus this company is not a favorite among Thai investors, and with some rumours about employee's stock options came out last year, its stock prices were generally declining all of last year. Finally I gave up "my support" on this stocks and sadly learned a fact that some good company might have bad stocks.
Glad I came out of it before I lost money. I think this year's price of SE-ED is still too low and that 's why Grammy, with its abundant cash, will grab SE-ED 's stocks.

Sustainable economy for the Thai future

I got a good book, among some Thai business magazines, from SE-ED bookstore on Saturday night.
It 's a Thai translation of the book entitled "The Future of Money" by Bernard Lietaer, printed in 2004.
The Thai title is เงินตราแห่งอนาคต วิถีใหม่สู่การรังสรรค์ความมั่งคั่ง งาน และโลกอันชาญฉลาด and published by a Thai NGO press called Suan Ngern Mee Ma Press.

A Thai introductory remark was given by a former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister of Thailand, Dr. Verabongse Ramangkur.

As of writing this blog (days before actual posting) I have just read 10% of the book in the first evening, right after arriving home back from the bookstore.

The author discussed a coming of the next economic crisis, perhaps witht the American dollars and he
suggested the benefit on using of supplementary "currency" to help minimize the impact and
systain the future society where money is shortcoming.
Thailand has a kind that supplementary currency, albeit community based, known in Thai as เบี้ยกุดชุม which I have personally admired it.
However, a few years ago, Bank of Thailand acted as if they did not like it and sort of discouraged its wide use.
I hope if they have read this book now, they would have changed their mind.

By the way, I eventually finished the book on the next day.

Scientific study of Buddhist meditation

I just stumbled on an interesting scientific article published last year in a prestigeous journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA, on neurological study of Buddhist monks' meditation. The article entitled

Long-term meditators self-induce high-amplitude gamma synchrony during mental practice, published in
PNAS 101(46), 16369-16373, November 16, 2004 by
Antoine Lutz , Lawrence L. Greischar , Nancy B. Rawlings , Matthieu Ricard and Richard J. Davidson
