(Jimmy Wales)

My one year anniversary of Vipassana lesson

Car and fuel price in Thailand

Earlier this year, it looked like to be another great year for cars' companies in Thailand. Motor sales had been up, until a recent surge in oil price slowed them down. Until 6 months ago, one of hot sale cars is a "SUV" (not really a SUV, but legally a modified pick-up truck) from Toyota called Fortuner, at 3000 vehicles per month. It 's said to be assembled in the Philippines. Its gasoline engine version uses a 6 cylinder 2.7 liter engine which sure to suck up fuel real fast. A diesel version use a 3.0 liter engine and cost more : but people were in a waiting list for 3 month before getting it. I suppose by this time, due to high oil price, their sale must have been cooled down.

I read from Business Week magazine yesterday: an article said that with current technology, car companies can squeeze the fuel effiency to save up to 30% more. Perhaps I should wait at least a year or two before buying a new generation of more fuel-efficient car. I believe car companies, in response to more customers who will want to save money on fuel, will start churning them out from assembly lines in about 2 years.

I 've got Thailand's new chip-embedded e-passport

Recently I just went to MFA 's Consular Department at Chang Wattana road to applied for a new passort. Now all the newly issued Thailand passports would be e-passports, which means they are embedded with an electronic security chip. I heard Thailand was the first country in Asia to use this technology. These new passports will be valid for only 5 years, and are not renewable, in other words, only new passports will be issued. I guess that the chips probably use one-way encryption algorithm. Facial figure and finger prints would be kept in the chip inside the passport book as well for automatic immigration processing at Thailand's port of entry / exit.

When I went to the Consular Department in one mid morning, I had to take a wait in a line and later getting a queue slip with printed number on it (mine was almost 600) : the print out also indicated that there was a long queue of 300 people waiting before me. I then had to proceed to wait in a waiting lounge for about 2 hr to wait for my turn. By the way, now only a citizen ID is needed, no other document required. Once it 's my turn to contact an officer inside, there are 2 dozens of kiosks for simutaneous processing of many applications, it took only a few minutes to finish my electronic application, online criminal background check, and authorization. First the lady swiped my citizen ID card in, and download all my information from the Ministry of Interior 's database, including my old picture. The only time consuming step was a few repetitive fingers' scans. I also was taken a picture by a digital camera and the image would then be printed in the new passport. After the some 10 minutes or so session, I then paid 1000 Baht for the fee and came out. The passport would be ready for pick up in only 2 days.

New scientific computational clustered servers for Thailand

I heard a news that a major life-science research institute in Thailand, BIOTEC, would get a budget to buy a new cluster of servers, with some 80 CPUs for research. The reason is that many Thai researchers have wanted a machine to conduct protein and drug modeling study.
That would be great news to a number of Thai life-scientists, since we do not have sufficient computational resource inside the country a moment. In the near future, any Thai researchers who might need to do mathematically intensive computer modeling or simulations might be able to use it in 6 months from now.
Only keep 2 fingers crossed though: now it is close to the end of the Thai government's fiscal year. The procurement process must be finish before the end of September or this blog entry would be no longer true.
Somehow the notification by the Central Comptroller General's Office came almost too late, quite difficult to set up a procurement process under all the redtapes.
It is either because people in the MOF were reluctant to give us money to spend and thus did not give us a green light before hand or they were working really really slow. We wiill see how thing turns out by the end of the month and will post again.

Thai translation of a 2000 years old Sanskrit epic, Asvaghosa's Buddhacarita (Acts of the Buddha)

Yesterday, I attended a bioinformatics workshop at Chulalongkorn University Faculty of Science, my alma mater, and during a lunch break I visited my old favorite CU Bookstore, main branch, at Sala Prakiew inside the campus.
(It 's next to the swimming pool which you could see from a Google map 's satellite image of Chula in Bangkok as a tiny bright blue rectangle.)
I stumbled upon several Thai books which I quickly bought. The one worth mentioning today is the Thai translation of a 2000 year old Sanskrit epic, Asvaghosa's Buddhacarita (Acts of the Buddha) or พุทธจริต in Thai.
by Dr. Samniang Lermsai, of Silpakorn University. He translated the entire 28 sections of this great Sanskrit epic poetry, from both Sanskrit and English.
(Sections 15-28 which were long lost over a millenium had to be back translated from Chinese into English and Hindi: the book was earlier translated from Sanskrit into Chinese and Tibetan around 7th Buddhist century.)
Surely, I have no sufficient knowledge to critically read his translation.
I just read a few dozen pages and so far I love it. The Thai language content is elegant. The price is not expensive, only 250 Baht for a decent size book (18.7 x 26 cm, and 2 cm thick).
It 's amazing that most Thai Buddhist people probably never heard of this title. We mostly know more of Greek epics, perhaps from Hollywood's movies like Troy and Alexander.
This kind of book is hard to sell, except to a few bookworms like me. And if it is sold out in a few years it it probably out, period. So I can't help but spend some of my hard earned cash buying such books like it.
(On this point, I have recently told myself, I have got to start saving more seriously for my retirement rather than keep buying books, otherwise when I 'm retired from work and decide go to monastery my kid would not become a mulimillionaire. :-) )
I realize I am an eccentric person, perhaps not characteristically nerdy, althought my nerd scale was 95 (or 98, I am not sure) out of 100 ! And you know, eccentric people don't read books that laypeople do. ;-)

300 GB Hard disk for Mac in Thailand

For my office's destop (a 64-bit dual G5 CPU Power Mac), I am thinking of buying an addional 300 GB hard disk. The 160 GB hard disk that came with the 1 month old machine is now about half full with my scientifically computed data.
The cost for a 300 GB Seagate internal hard drive in Thailand is around 9200 Baht now (monetary exchange rate of around 41 Baht to 1 USD), external one is more expensive. Considering that Seagate hard disks are assembled in Thailand, perhaps I should buy this one soon.
I suppose I can add up to 2 internal hard disks so I can add at least 600 GB of storage inside the tower. Sure, I have seen reviews of 400 GB hard disks in the Net, but they are pricey
and I have not seen them advertised from any commercial website in Thailand. I have not been to Pantip Plaza in person lately. The last time I went there, some hawkers of unrated CD called me Pa, as in "Pa, would you like some Po (revealed one)?", and I did't like that. I also do not like to see hundreds of foreign tourists who flock to the place daily to hunt for illegal softwares, it 's a shame for the country.

Laptops' price trend for 2005

I just read BW magazine (Asian edition) few days ago: one article covering laptop computers mentioned that the average price for a laptop in 2005 (in the USA, I suppose) would be about USD 700, on in Thai Baht (THB) about 29,000 Baht, compare to about USD 1,000 or about THB 41,000 Baht last year (2004). Frankly I have seen laptops in that quoted price range in Bangkok Thailand as well, but all of them are of poor quality so I am not sure how the word average was defined in that article. Naturally, the prices vary with specifications and quality, not to mention the OS. Thus I think, for the price-conscious buyers, it still falls into "you get what you pay" situation. The dropping prices mentioned are undoubtedly the machines running the aging Windows XP operating system (3 yr old already). This is especially true considering that the price of an Apple Macintosh laptop with the latest OS-X Tiger does not drop that much. But considering the price of a Mac laptop, the price is higher. But one must also remember that the Mac's price includes the price of the OS (OS-X Tiger) plus some add-on softwares, not to mentioned a great GUI design and user experience.

I am not a Mac's fanatic, nor am I a newbie to computer, having used several ones for the past 20+ years. (The first PC
I encountred and unpacked it alone from the box for my lab (and even RTFM) was a Wyse 8088 PC (with 10 MB hard disk, I think), using MS-DOS 2.0 and came with BASIC interpreter.) I have used most of the OSes, such as AT&T Unix, Solaris (Unix from Sun), Digital Unix, many Linux distributions, several versions of DOS and Windows, Mac system 6, and lastly Mac OS-X 10.4 Tiger, so I know which is good.
Considering the total price, if you include the price of legitimate copy of OS such as WinXP into the laptop, the price difference between a Windows laptop and Mac laptop is not too much. But buying a Mac laptop one gets a much better user interface and simplification. Definitely, now I am thinking of buying a new Mac laptop to replace my 3 yr old (Thai assembled) "toaster" in the next few months. That toaster is a laptop running a 32 bit WinME OS. (Legal copy, of course.) It now hangs often, and this is slow and hot, and when considering an additional fact that I usually have many files opened at the same time, and I also have a number of gigantic files, say some in the size 10 MB - 500 MB (that correct, half a gigabyte a file) Windows programs could not be opened in it. Thus the 32 bit OS is currently useless for me, only a 64 bit Unix-based like Tiger will do. It is amazing that most people are sort of like a frog sitting covered inside a coconut shell, as a Thai adage says, that they never saw a horizon beyond Windows. I am not an anti-MicroSoft person. I respect its contributions to the World's progress and I used to use its SW before. However, I choose to use mostly free or open-source softwares and using a Unix machine opens that possibility well. Most people never realize that situation.
