The movie on King Naresuan

I just saw that they had set up a big beautiful booth with big plasma display at the Paragon showing trailer of the movie, King Naresuan. This is the movie a lot of Thai will be anxiously waiting to see this coming December 2006, after the movie Suriyothai. I certainly will not miss. See the movie's website in the link given above.

A later news indicated that the Thailand premier will be on January 17, 2007.

A new Disneyland for Thailand ?

I just found a short news that a well-known Thai liquor billionaire is negotiating with Disney about setting up Thailand Disneyland in Hua-Hin in a 10,000 rai plot of land.

If that is fruitful, I think it 's going to adversely affect the serene beach resort of Hua-Hin. A few ten thousands of additional tourists per day. And the normally-quiet Hua-Hin airport, which only serves as commercial pilot training site, would become very busy and noisy with jetliners. Imagine a few jets touching down the runway every hour to shuttle ten thousands of tourists each day ! That's a nightmare for peace-seeking vacationers and retirees in Cha-am and Hua-Hin area. And the King lives at the Klai-Kangwon Palace not far away from the the airport as well.

Internet Addict

Good to read: เด็กป่าซาบิเน่ Dschungelkind by Sabine Kuegler

I just bought a book, translated from German into Thai language, entitled in Thai as Bought it at 8 p.m. and I thought at first I would just quickly scanned through. But really, I carefully read from beginning to the end until I just finished by 1:30 a.m. next day, a moment ago, and is still fully impressed. So I want to jot in my blog here. The cover of the Thai version said it is being licensed to translate into languages of 24 countries. Sure it is fun to read.

At first I planned about buying this one for both my daughter and me but after I finished it I think the content is a bit too heavy for even a 12 year old bookworm girl.

Luangphor Uttama passed away

From Thai television news as well as the web, the venerable Luangphor Uttama, passed away of septicemia. The elderly monk is widely repected by Thais, Mons, and Burmeses. The Mon ethnic Buddhist monk escaped the civil war in Burma into Thailand several decades ago and built the Wat Wangwiwekaram monastery in Sangkhla Buri district of Kanchanaburi, not far away from the Three Pagodas Pass. His current temple, as well as his former temple, which is now submerged under the water level after a dam construction decades ago, are major tourist attractions.

I recall the 3 Characters of all entities in Buddhism, called Triluksana, namely the Dhukka (suffering), the Anijjata (starting, establishing, terminating), the Anatta (non-selfness), and my feeling is neutral on this (Ubekha).

Gates Foundation gave money to Bangkok Public Library

I found a sentence from Thai news about the current Books Fair at QSNCC today, indicating that BMA (Bangkok Metropolitan Administration) 's Public Library branch at Lumbhini Park would get a financial support from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The renovated branch would then serve as a show-case model for other branches later, perhaps city-wide and then country-wide.
This is a big issue for me, since I personally think Thailand needs to have more local district libraries with better book collections. (My personal collection might be bigger and of superior quality than those of many districts' libraries.) For the given grant, I think it 's good news that we are getting something back for billions of Baht that Thailand has paid to MicroSoft 's legal softwares, some money of which ended up to the Gates and eventually to the Foundation. I 'd like to record my appreciation to the Foundation here, on behalf of fellow Thai people, although I am a Mac user.

Update: A few weeks after this post, Thai news sources indicated that the donation was via MicroSoft Thailand. I think it 's tricky way that they did this. The money donated via the Foundation might be tax deductable in the US for Microsoft. And in Thailand, the same money channeled thru MicroSoft Thailand might also be tax deductable for MicroSoft Thailand. Double whammy. Tax break for 2 countries: if my speculation is correct. This is a smart move for M$.

A new Thailand's government

From the new cabinet appointed on October 9, 2006, Thailand has finally got its best best Minister of Science and Technology, and its best Minister of Information and Communication Technology ever. They are among the brightest and most accomplished Thai Professors in their respective field. I 'm quite anxious to see how they would change the landscape of academic Thailand in the next 1 yr. At least I expect they 're going to do a lot of foundation and ground breaking works to finally move Thailand 's science & technology and ICT into 21st century. I really hope so.

News agencies had focused on economic ministers so I had to write this one to log this important aspect into the history as well.

Leopard

Buddhism's essence core of principles

What is the ultimate teaching principle of Buddhism ?
As "I" have read, studied, heard, and practiced, "I" can simply summarize the answer as these:-

To teach oneself that
This body is not mine. The body is not myself.
This mind is not mine. The mind is not myself.
There is no real thing such as I and self, the body and mind are just part of the Universe, and are indifferent from other entities.
Me, people, animal, are not real. (Much like the fact that a car is also not real: a car is just a composite entity of spareparts, even composite of atoms, molecules, etc.)

"I" is not real, hence the quotation.

Buddhism can not be ultimately appreciated if one limits the learning by "trying to understand" theoretical or academic subject. It can be fully and deeply understood only after one keeps on observing the body and mind of oneself. It could take years, decades, even future reincarnations before one can deeply understand the true meaning of what "I" have cited above.

Notice "my" wording of "to teach oneself", which means that even Lord Buddha could only gave hints, only each "person" could really teach and fully convince "oneself".

Many Farang reporters did not have a clue

From the view points as I could read from the web, it 's clear that westerners have different view points from Thais on the situation in Thailand.

I am thinking of an analogy: just like when termites were attacking our house, so we had to dismantle several parts of the house and rebuild a number of structures , while our neighbors would just kept on complaining that we should stop the repair and go on with normal life. Many of them did not have a clue.

Another thing that I found again and again, many foreign reporters do not know that a white uniform in Thailand is not always a military one, but it could be one of many civil servants' uniforms. The new PM, in the ceremony to receive the Royal Command, was in the official Prime Minister uniform. One has to look at the shoulder pad to see his government ranking position (a political one) and the brass pins at the neck to see his affiliated Ministry.

Thailand has got the 24th Prime Minister

The King has signed a Royal Command to appoint the new Prime Minister. Gen. Surayud Chulanont, former Thai Army Commander in Chief, former Supreme Commander, and former Privy Councilor (he just resigned to accept this new position) has formally received the Royal Command at the Government House. In a week after this, after the new PM has selected cabinet members and they are appointed by another Royal Command, and only after they have an audience with the King to give a vow, then the new Thai cabinet can start to function.

From the web's voting, it appeared that over 97% of Thai net-users agreed that he is the best choice. I think so too. Regardless of what some western governments and foreign scholars say, Thai people should know best about who should best run their country for the interest of the Thai citizens, not to please or to serve foreign interests or international conglomerates.

My another trip to Pantip Plaza

Hard disk prices are cheap these days, and getting cheaper every month. Today I just bought 320 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm 16 MB cache SATA drives, 2 of them in fact, from Pantip Plaza in Bangok. I also bought an aluminium case to house both of them together, with 2 FireWire 800 ports, a FireWire 400 port, USB 2.0 port, cooling fan at the back, and all cables provided. The aluminium case looks well matched with the G5 tower.

Back at home, I checked for the price of the drive in the US from the Internet and found that the price I paid (~4200 Baht) was about or 10% higher than a price quoted on a web in the US ($95). That 's normal since we have to pay 7% tax (Thailand 's VAT). In addition, IT retailers in Bangkok have also generally said that, although Thailand 's import tax of this type of products is 0 percent, they still have under the table cost to pay anyway, not to mention their own profit margin.

I did not bother to check the price of the aluminium case, which has no brand. I bought it at about 6000 Baht. At first I was looking for a cheaper case, but that would not have FireWire 800 port which is twice the speed of FW400 or USB 2.0 Most Windows PC do not have FireWire 800 port, only the Mac computers do. With smaller number of Mac customers in Thailand, that 's why cases with FireWire 800 port are a lot more expensive.

Now I am all set since I have got external back up hard disks with 640 Gb capacity for my data. Since this unit needs external electricity, looks like I should use UPS for this stuff.
