Thailand's organic rice farming

I watched TV few nights ago: there was an interview of a Mr. Decha Siribhatr, a recognized outstanding exemplar of Suphan Buri, who is a founder of Khao Khwan Foundation (or มูลนิธิข้าวขวัญ in Thai), and the Farmer School โรงเรียนชาวนา. By using organic farming, rice farmers can actually earn money and make a decent living.

I felt like I 'd like to find time to visit the foundation and learn the art of organic rice farming some time in the future.

Useful links I found (in Thai) are given below:-

There are now farmer schools in Nakhon Sawan as well:-

Interesting article: text search

From the article linked above at Google blog, I now learned that the so called วรรณยุกต์ or tone marks or intonation marks in Thai language are technically considered to be equivalent to diacritical marks in other languages by software engineers for text processing.

Losses so far

From the news, for the past 3-4 days, over 100,000 people missed their flights at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport due to its closure by the anti-government protestors. A few hundred mail sacks got stuck. Exports and imports could not be done. All expressed mails, FedEx, DHL, UPS, whatever, can not transport international packages. I also see TV news that Thailand 's NESDB secretariat estimated that economic loss for so far for the country is estimated at 104 Billion Baht. I am afraid that it might cost more if the situation is protracted. Thailand GDP growth for next year (2009) is estimated at 2%. ( I don't believe that number, I feel like it might not be positive. Many factories do not have new orders. And now tourists are leaving, while none coming.) Many Thai people are angry. Some are worrisome and feel helpless. I speculate that when people realize that they will also be financially affected soon too, they will be more stressful.

Ice predicted to be gone from Himalaya in just over 2 decades

I just found this important message in the above link. Another sad scenario in the future not too far away, this one is global though and will affect hundreds of millions of people in India and other countries.
I think Thailand will be affected too, temperature in the northern and northeastern regions should be warmer, even in cool season. And Bangkok may be few meters below the sea level by then.

By that time, if "I" am still alive, I 'm not sure where I will live: certainly not in the central Thailand, more likely in the high-altitude northern or upper northeastern region.

Bangkok Airport under siege

Today, my mind was sadden about the news of the siege of Bangkok International Airport by the anti-government protestors. The protestors are playing a hard ball now and perhaps most of them do not realize that, by interrupting air-transportation, they exposed themselves to misunderstanding and condemnations from international communities and ruined the dignity of the entire Thai nation now. That dignity is even more important than economic losses due to airport closure, estimated around 500 million Baht a day, not to mention inconvenience of stranded international travelers. This action is unacceptable. And for the current situation, I feel like Thailand is inching more toward breaking out a civil war between the groups of people in yellow and red for the cause of only few unworthy politicians. I hope confronting parties would now step back and give in to more reasons. I don't want to see more violence arisen from unreasonable domestic animosity. It 's a bad Karma that we should try at best to avoid.

Genome Annotation workshop in Bangkok

I attended a Wellcome Trust 's genome annotation workshop on "Working with Pathogen Genomes" last week (Nov 10-14, 2008) in Bangkok. It was hosted by Mahidol-Oxford University Research Unit (MORU) at the Mahidol University 's Faculty of Tropical Medicine. Essentially, the course centered on the Artemis software installed on xubuntu Linux PCs. Most teaching staff came from Sanger Institute 's in UK: they are highly skilled professional genome annotators. I appreciate their effort and time coming a long way from Europe to SE Asia for a week to set up the training for us. Teaching asssistants in this workshop were Wellcome 's staff or associates stationed in Thailand, Lao, Vietnam, and Singapore. Most of participants were from Thailand and several Asean countries, one from Australia. Foods were superb. I learned a lot of tricks from them. Very useful. I enjoyed it very much. I also appreciate the nice training facility of MU Tropmed 's Medical informatics unit.
Some Thai people were mentioning of a possibility of organizing a similar workshop in Thai language in the future as well. That would be useful for other people who could not participate in that workshop. And I am willing to give a hand on them if someone would do it.

A new catch phrase from old Thai ad ?

In the past few weeks, after the introduction of the new MacBook and MacBook Pro by Apple 's CEO, I have noticed many of the hardware reviews echoed the phrase that Mr. Steve Jobs mentioned of the new glass multi-touch pad as "smooth as silk". Today is another occasion that I found another review from an online newspaper. See link above.
I 'd like to point it out here that that catch phrase is likely originated from a decade old catch-phrase of Thai International Airways 's TV advertisements, shown in Thailand as well as overseas, which proclaimed that a flight on a Thai airliner is as "Smooth as silk".

Perhaps next week I 'll have a chance to touch the pad to see if the feeling is really silky or not, or it 's just a hype. A colleague of mine has just reserved his new MacBook from a Bangkok dealer, iStudio, and he expects to get his notebook in the matter of days. So far, only few lucky Thai customers who made early reservations have been able to buy their MacBooks or MacBook Pros, others (including my colleague) have to wait for future shipments.
