Our trip to Lumbini, Nepal (4)

Next morning we had to leave Lumbini early in order to try to cross the border back to India as early as possible. I missed the nice morning weather there.

After we crossed back to India via the same check point, we stopped by at a new Thai monastery called "Wat Thai 960", to "visit" the facility (among the cleanest toilets in India, we believed). There are a lot of plants so those are nice toilets in a garden. They also have restrooms specifically for monk. (In the picture, airy roots of ornamental plants hanged in front of it to provide green atmosphere.)

The temple also provide some complimentary coffee, hot snack (newly fried Roti with condensed milk!) for us. Thanks. I also donated 1000 Baht to help in the land buying for a new Wat in Savatthi (Saravastri), in addition to another sum to help building additional clean restrooms for traveling Buddhists who mostly would cross the border at Sonauli.

Afterward, we went to an archeological temple of Kapilavastu (on the India side). This is another important place since the stupa there is the place where the British found remains of Lord Buddha with ancient inscription saying so over a century ago. A part of the remains was given as gift to King Rama V of Siam, and now they are at the Golden Mount's top in Bangkok. I was the one who recognize this fact so, after I told my monk master, he led our group to do the 3 round circum-walking and chanting around the stupa again.

We stop by at a resort to have a lunch. Hidden behind the vast poverty of Indians, this big mansion is a former palace of a Maharaja built in the colonial style. Nice place. They also have rooms for anyone who might want to spend the night there too. But I think we Thais felt a bit creepy although I heard westerners love to stay here a lot.

Our trip to Lumbini, Nepal (3)

Late afternoon, we went to Wat Thai Lumbini. It is also an official Royal Thai Buddhist Monastery, since its construction was funded by the government of Thailand and donation from the people of Thailand. That was a very good deed by "a" government and I 'd like to say Anumodhana with them (although I currently do not have positive attitude to that former Prime Minister, you guess who).

We first headed to a wellcoming Sala to have some complimentary drinks and snacks. (Well, we donated some money later.) It has a very beautiful ordination hall (Uposoth), designed by a prominent Thai architect, using a mix of Thai and Nepali styles. The long structure of the hall is supposed to represent the Himalaya mountain range and the white color is to represent the snow.

We went inside the Uposoth to make merit, where the presiding Buddha image is made of white jade (from Burma), and styled after the Emerald Buddha in the Royal Grand Palace in Bangkok. We were told that another replica of the white jade Buddha image, slightly larger, and decorated with gold, was given to HM the King of Thailand. I believe a major sponsor of the construction of the buddha images was Thai Airways International, since I noticed a logo in a sign nearby.

Some of us (me included) bough some Thai designed and produced "Baby Buddha" images from the temple. The money would go toward the activity of the temple. Since this temple is in the park where Lord Buddha was born, and there was a story that he immediately could walked 7 steps before proclaiming his "Asmiwaja", or the great utterance. So this Thai temple has a numeral sign code as 979, in Thai "Kao Jed Kao" means "walking 7 steps forward". Other temples under the same abbot has other codes, such as 960, and 980 (for the 60th coronation anniversary, and the 80th birthday anniversary of HM the King). (Really smart, your venerable.)

Our trip to Lumbini, Nepal (2)

At the Lumbini park, we visited the shell structure of the archeological site where a footprint was found, presumably to mark the exact birth place of Lord Buddha. Afterward to went to chant and meditate for a while before going to walk around the Ashoka pillar 3 times and wrap a gold laced yellow rope around it. (I had a nagged feeling about the expected quick disappearance of such a nice piece of cloth soon after it was put up there (and at other places as well) by us. Ok, it had been donated, so whoever took them down later we hope they 'd use it for a good cause.) There is a brass plate showing the translation of the inscription on the pillar. I think anyone can read its English text from this small picture.

Our trip to Lumbini, Nepal

We departed Kusinara on Oct 26 2009 when our chartered bus took us across the border to Nepal via Sonaoli border check point. There were hundreds of trucks waiting to cross border. I understand that tourist buses have privilege to cut the several kilometer long line of trucks to the front and took us passing through both Indian and Nepalese immigrations and cross the border in a relatively short time (<1 hr). We then went straight to Lumbini. Inside Nepal, I did not enjoy the scenery outside the bus windows much since there were a lot of garbages dump alongside the road, almost everywhere, so it did not look pleasant. I hope one day the Nepaleses would set up garbage dumps and collection service to beautify their country a bit. After we checked in to a hotel, we immediately rode rickshaws (oh, jeese, I have not used this word for decades) into Lumbini Park (the forest where Lord Buddha was born) in the afternoon.
We took group pictures with very lovely Nepalese kids who also visit the archeological site. Since they have no e-mail that we can mail pictures to them, so I think posting a picture here would be good enough. I hope sometime in the future some of them might stumble upon this picture in the cyberspace.

Kusinara

From Varanasi, we headed to Kusinara as Thais called its old name of 2600 years ago. The current name is Kusinagar. The road was narrow, and there were traffic jams along some intersections and railroad crossing. The bus could not drive fast. On a bridge crossing a river, there was only one lane and thus vehicles had to take turns.
We arrived at Kusinara in the afternoon. We went to the main stupa at Kusinara, at the spot where Lord Buddha (died) went to Nirvana 2552 years ago. We took a group picture in front of the stupa and went inside the main Vihara for chanting mantra and meditation. We then also conducted a 3 round clockwise walking around the main buddha image there. He is in the final resting posture. We felt as if we were just visiting the Buddha who just passed away only moment ago. While chanting I had some mixed deep feeling of pleasure and sorrow. My master (the monk) also brought a yellow and golden robe as a blanket for the image as a homage gesture. Later, we went out to visit the cremation site, about a kilometer away, where a stupa was also erected. We had an evening chant there until being chased away by darkness and mosquitoes.

After arriving at the Kusinagar hotel, we also walked out to a nearby Bodhi tree, marking the site where the remains of the Buddha after the cremation ceremony was divided by "Tona Brahmin" into 8 parts, one part for his own King and others to give out to emissaries send out by 7 other Buddhist Kings to get their share of the relics too. This is a "sacred site" rarely visited by Buddhists. We chanted there in the dark, and took pictures. There were unusual large number of "stars" seen in the pictures. Obviously, the "stars" are caused by particles which reflected the photographic flash light. However, interpretation on the nature of the particles is up to individuals. I can say that the weather at that time was quite nice and I did not feel the presence of dust or any particles. Afterward, we walked to the nearby Thai temple at Kusinara. This is an "official" royal temple erected by the King of Thailand and the Thai government. It has the same status as hundreds of official royal temples in Thailand. We conducted a chant inside the main Jedi (from the Pali word "Jetiya" = pagoda) there. We also donated some money and stuff there to monks and officials of the temple. It is a very beautiful temple, even at night.

Toward Varanasi

On October 24, 2009, from Sujata's house near Gaya, our group traveled in the afternoon in a new air-conditioned minibus to Varanasi. A portion of the road that we took was a 4-lane divided highway with toll plazas along the way. We stopped by to have an afternoon tea at a gas station, Indian tea with ginger added, that I heard they call it Kalam Jai, so we Thai called it in a similar sound but in Thai language as "Kamlang Jai" which means "enrouragement or moral support".

Of course, on a long road journey like this we need that refreshment as an encouragement, esp. when there is no clean restroom for us to use. We thus had the first chance to use "the largest toilet in the World" on this route, that is the open air, to relieve some internal pressure once in a while. For ladies, the tour company have some foldable personal tents to be used as mobile toilets for them. Yes, those tents are mobile, since it has to be moved after each lady is finished with the business and the next lady surely would not want to use the same spot as the toilet. Before this trip, I had read some Thai books about trips to India before and I know that Thai people had developed a convention of using the open air as toilets along the way, i.e. women go to the left of the bus, men go across the road to the right side of the bus, monks go the front of the bus, nuns go to the back side of the bus. :-) On our road journeys, we try to keep that convention, i.e. men tried to use the right side of the road and women tried to use the left side when possible, although that 's not always possible. It 's o.k. now since women now have tents to keep their privacy during such awkward situation. For me, I tried to manage myself quite well and I tried to have "heavy task" at the hotels, i.e. in the early morning before each day's departure and late evening after arriving at the new hotel. I only used roadside for "lighter task".

About an hour before we arrived Varanasi, we started to smell some pungent unique smell, probably due to smog. Varanasi, as Thais called Banarasi, is perhaps a 4000 years old city, or perhaps older than that. I have been to India before this trip, but never before to Varanasi. That day, I though that I felt I just reached and felt more of India.

That evening, we went to the Ganges to watch a ceremony in the evening of daily worshipping Suriya Dev, the Sun angel. I had seen that evening ceremony in a Thai documentary DVD before. There were thousands of locals on the river bank while hundreds of tourists (seen in the foreground in the picture) were floating in perhaps a hundred rented boats in the river snapping pictures along the way and during the ceremony. We stayed there to watch the sacred ritual for about half an hour before heading back to the hotel in preparation for tomorrow early departure to Kusinara (Kusinaga). I had some feeling about their ceremony. One remark though, quality of the the river in some area, esp. the pier that they cremate bodies was "not clean". It's amazing nevertheless : I have heard before a saying that bonfires on the Ganges bank at Varanasi never stop for thousands of years. We 'll be back to this area again in the next few days but in the morning.

Firefox
