Will the upcoming election in February 2014 fail ?

I just checked out a Thai newspaper website (Naewna) and found an interesting statistics about the upcoming Thailand's general election due February 2014. This is not scientific, since the number of voted people was small (only over 2100 as of today), and population of people on the web does not represent well the majority of offline people. Also that statistics came from a newspaper aligned with the opposition view, and the figure likely represents the current political mood in Thailand today.

Anyway, the statistics showed that (perhaps among people with opposition view), the majority would go to the ballot station but choose nobody (48% vote No, in green), a significant number of people would not go to the ballot at all (40% absent, in red). Small number of people would go, but would make the ballot invalid one way or another (6% to make ballot invalid, blue), the smallest number of people would go and vote (5%, beige)

If the current statistics is any indication, the election result will not solve any political problem. Clearly political reforms are needed before an effective election can be held.

หลักธรรมล้ำลึกของพุทธศาสนา

ความเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของปัจเจกที่หายไปด้วยฝีมือองค์กรของรัฐ

ไม่กี่วันก่อน ผมไปพักผ่อนที่ ดอยอ่างขาง กับครอบครัว
น่าสนใจที่เผอิญพบว่า ที่นั่นก็มี โรงเรียนเทพศิรินทร์ ด้วยแฮะ มาแบบนี้อีกแล้ว
แต่ที่ผมประหลาดใจกว่า คือ เช้าวันรุ่งขึ้น ก่อนเวลาโรงเรียนเข้า เขาเปิดเพลงเชียร์ มาร์ชชมพูฟ้า ของสวนกุหลาบวิทยาลัย ออกลำโพงลั่นไปทั้งหุบเขา ได้ยินไปถึงโรงแรมผมที่อยู่บนเขา !  อ้าว เทพศิรินทร์ สีเขียวเหลืองนี่นา ? เปิดทำไม โรงเรียนสาขาอยู่ใน หรือรู้จักจตุรมิตรด้วยหรือ ? การ implement อะไรมันจะวุ่นวายปนเปกันอย่างนั้น !

ผมเขียนบันทึกนี้ด้วยความเห็นหลายๆ อย่างที่ปนๆ กันอยู่ แต่ที่ต้องพูดให้ชัดก่อนคือ ผมไม่ได้รู้สึกว่า เป็นเจ้าเข้าเจ้าของสถาบัน หรือยึดมั่นถือมั่นอะไร ผมปฏิบัติธรรมมามาก แม้ผมเป็นศิษย์เก่าสวนกุหลาบวิทยาลัย การได้ยินเพลงโปรดที่สมัยเมื่อ สี่สิบกว่าปีก่อนได้ยินทุกเช้าก่อนเดินแถวเข้าห้องเรียนสมัยมัธยม ที่สวนกุหลาบวิทยาลัย ถนนตรีเพชร ย้อนนำความฮึกเหิมเล็กน้อยกลับมา ผมรู้สึกรื่นเริงที่ได้ฟังเพลงนั้น แต่ความคิดที่เกิดขึ้นวันนั้นมันปนๆ กันอยู่ ไม่ทราบว่าจะเขียนออกมาได้ครบถ้วนกระบวนความหรือไม่ และคนอ่านจะเข้าใจเจตนาผมได้ถูกต้องหรือไม่

แรกที่เดียว ผมอยากจะพูดในเรื่องหนึ่งที่คนไทยดูจะไม่เคยกล้าพูดกันมาเลยหลายสิบปีมาแล้ว คือเรื่องที่กระทรวงศึกษาถือสิทธิ์ไปสร้าง franchise โรงเรียนดังหลายๆ แห่งในกรุงเทพฯ ด้วยการไปเปิดสาขาโรงเรียนต่างๆ ทั้งในกรุงเทพฯ เอง และ ที่ต่างจังหวัด ทั่วประเทศ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น สวนกุหลาบ สตรีวิทย์ เตรียมอุดม เทพศิรินทร์ ฯลฯ

ผมไม่อยากจะตำหนินโยบายในอดีตว่า บางโรงเรียนเขาเป็นโรงเรียนพระราชทาน ที่ในหลวงองค์ก่อนๆ พระราชทานนามมา สัญญลักษณ์สถาบันก็อีก บางโรงเรียนท่านก็เสด็จมาเปิดเองเลย เป็นโรงเรียนของท่าน ไม่ทราบว่าในยุคที่เริ่มเปิดโรงเรียนชื่อเหมือนนั้น มีใครเคยขอพระราชทาน พระราชานุญาตกันหรือเปล่า หรือว่าทำโดยถือสิทธิว่าเป็นหน่วยราชการจะทำอะไรก็ได้ เอาละ เวลาก็ผ่านมาเป็นสิบๆ ปีแล้ว ป่วยการจะไปฟื้นฝอยหาตะเข็บ ประเด็นนี้ก็พับไป

แต่ผมว่าประเด็นหลักที่สำคัญกว่า คือ ตอนนี้ผมอยากรู้ว่า เท่าที่ผ่านมาหลายสิบปีนั้น กระทรวงศึกษาเพียงแค่เอาชื่อ franchise นั้นไปหลอกชาวบ้านทั่วประเทศหรือเปล่า มาตราฐานของโรงเรียน(น้อง)ในต่างจังหวัด ทำได้ดีเหมือนโรงเรียนหลักหรือเปล่า ผมว่านี่เป็นเรื่องซีเรียส คนไทยติดแบรนด์กันมาก สุดท้ายกระทรวงฯ ดูเหมือนว่าต้องตกกระไดพลอยโจนหลอกชาวบ้าน และชาวไทยก็ดูเหมือนจะทำเป็นลืมๆ ไปเหมือนกัน ที่ลูกหลานตัวเองไปเข้าโรงเรียน"สาขาในเครือ" ต่างๆ นั้น ทั้งๆ ที่เป็นแค่โรงเรียนชื่อเหมือน (นี่ยังไม่ได้ยืดประเด็นไปถึงมหาวิทยาลัยสาขานะ)

นอกจากมาตราฐานการศึกษาพอจะเป็นสิ่งที่พอจะจับต้องได้ และตรวจสอบได้แล้ว หากต้องการตรวจ (แต่ผลเป็นอย่างไรนั้น สาธารณชนไม่เคยรับทราบ ไม่เคยมีการประชาสัมพันธ์) มันยังมีเรื่องอื่นอีก ซึ่งก็สำคัญ แต่เป็นเรื่องเชิงนามธรรม แง่ความรู้สึก "จิตวิญญาณ" ประเพณี ความผูกพัน การบ่มเพาะสปริต ความรักเกียรติของสถาบันและชื่อเสียงของโรงเรียน เคารพรักครูเก่าๆ (ความรักนี้เป็นเรื่องของศักดิ์ศรีและความดี ดังนั้นจึงไม่มีเหตุการณ์นักเรียนไปตีกันเหมือนพวกโรงเรียนอาชีวะ ที่เปลี่ยนแค่ชื่อมาเป็นวิทยาลัยบางแห่ง) ความผูกพันของศิษย์เก่าที่แวะเวียนมาช่วยเหลือ ความภูมิใจที่ไม่เสื่อมคลายแม้ผ่านไปหลายสิบปีแล้ว ความผูกพันที่บางครอบครัวเรียนโรงเรียนหนึ่ง กับครูประจำชั้นคนเดียวกันมาตั้งแต่รุ่นพ่อจนถึงรุ่นลูก ผมอยากจะเชื่อว่า โรงเรียนที่ชื่อเหมือนโรงเรียนต้นแบบนั้น คงทำประเด็นนี้ไม่ได้ อาจจะพยายามทำแต่คงทำไม่ได้เหมือน

ส่วนผลกระทบของคนในสังคมส่วนหนึ่งที่เขาเป็นศิษย์เก่าสถาบันต้นแบบ ก็ไม่เคยมีใครกล้าพูดมาก่อน
ผมอาจจะยกอุปลักษณ์ หรือ อุปไมย (metaphore) หน่อยก็ได้ ในรูปแบบของคำถาม ที่สถานการณ์คล้ายๆ กันว่า คุณจะรู้สึกอย่างไรถ้าวันหนึ่งไปเจอใครก็ไม่รู้ที่ต่างถิ่น มีชื่อเดียวกัน นามสกุลเดียวกัน กับญาติผู้ใหญ่ของคุณ แล้วไปทำเรื่องเสียหายขึ้นมา ? (ต้องบอกก่อนว่า กรณีอุปไมยนี้เป็นเรื่องจริง มีมาแล้วกับผม ประสบการณ์ที่เจอ จึงไม่ใช่เรื่องตลก)

เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ ผมอ่านบทความเกี่ยวกับ นีทเช่ เขาพูดประมาณว่า  "รัฐทำให้ความเป็นปัจเจกสูญหายไป" ผมเริ่มเห็นด้วยกับเขา ผมรู้สึกว่า การทำ franchise สถาบันการศึกษาขึ้นมานี้ เป็นแค่นโยบายลูบหน้าปะจมูก ซึ่งทำลายเอกลักษณ์ของแต่ละสถาบัน ทำลายความเป็นปัจเจกของแต่ละหน่วยย่อยที่ดีงามของสังคม ให้ทุกอย่างดูเหมือนว่าดี(หรือเลว)เท่าๆ กัน แบบมีความเสมอภาคกัน ตอนนี้ในใจผมตั้งคำถามว่า ที่ทำไปแล้วในอดีต มันถูกต้องดีแล้วหรือ ที่หน่วยงานรัฐทำ mass franchise  ดูเหมือนว่าตั้งใจหลอกคนในสังคม ผลลัพท์คือเป็นการทำให้ความเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของแต่ละสิ่งที่ดีงามหายไปหมด จะดีกว่าไหม ถ้าหากในอนาคต หันมาส่งเสริมให้แต่ละแห่งแต่ละที่มีความเป็นเอกลักษณ์ความดีของตัวเอง และให้เขาบ่มเพาะเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัวของตัวเองขึ้นมา บ่มเพาะความเป็นเลิศขึ้นมา สั่งสมประเพณีที่ดีงามขึ้นมา ทำไมต้อง mass production สถาบันการศึกษาอย่างกับโรงงานอุตสาหกรรม หรือภัตตาคารแดกด่วน (แต่ทำไม่ได้มาตราฐานเดียวกันเป๊ะแบบภาคธุรกิจ) หรืออย่างกับหลักสูตร ที่เลวเท่ากันหมด ... (เอ้อ เรื่องนี้เอาไว้ก่อน)

จบแค่นี้ก่อนดีกว่า

เยอรมันจะใช้โทรศัพท์ป้องกันการดักฟัง

รัฐบาลเยอรมัน จะใช้โทรศัพท์ซึ่งมีโปรแกรมป้องกันการดักฟัง เพื่อป้องกันการสอดแนมของประเทศอื่น โดยเฉพาะหน่วยงานข่าวกรองของสหรัฐ ตามข่าวนี้

เข้าใจว่า เป็นโปรแกรมพัฒนาขึ้นสำหรับโทรศัพท์ที่ใช้ แอนดรอยโอเอส เพราะข่าวระบุว่า โปรแกรมนี้เข้าไม่ได้กับระบบไอโฟน เพราะรัฐบาลเยอรมันจะทะยอยลดการใช้ไอโฟนของแอปเปิ้ลลงไปเรื่อยๆ

จริงๆ แล้ว แอนดรอยไม่ค่อยปลอดภัยเท่าไร แต่พวกเขาเชื่อว่าเขาจะทำให้มันปลอดภัยกว่าได้
เยอรมันจะให้คนในรัฐบาลและพรรคการเมืองหลัก ๒ พรรค ใช้โปรแกรมนี้ในการติดต่อสื่อสาร

เมืองไทยคงไม่จำเป็นในตอนนี้ เพราะว่าคนไทยจำนวนหนึ่งในยุคนี้ดูเหมือนว่าซื้อได้ด้วยเงิน ใครเอาเงินฟาดหัวก็คงจะได้ความลับไป หรือแม้แต่ให้บ่อนทำลายชาติก็เอา น่าสังเวชคนพวกนั้น

กูเกิลชนะคดีสแกนหนังสือตามห้องสมุดต่างๆ

ผู้พิพากษาศาลอุทธรณ์สหรัฐ (US Circuit Court) ตัดสินให้ กูเกิล (Google) จำเลยซึ่งโดนฟ้องในคดี ละเมิดลิขสิทธิ์ด้วยการสแกนหนังสือในห้องสมุดต่างๆ ชนะคดี โจทก์ ซึ่งก็คือ สมาคมผู้แต่งหนังสือ (Author's Guild) ตามข่าว
ศาลตัดสินว่า การสแกนและทำดัชนีเนื้อความในหนังสือต่างๆ ของกูเกิลให้คนค้นหาได้บนเน็ต อยู่ในขอบเขตที่ทำได้ตามกฎหมาย ที่ให้ "ใช้อย่างยุติธรรม" (fair use) เพราะเป็นการเพิ่มมูลค่าให้กับงานเดิม ไม่ได้ทำให้เจ้าของหนังสือเสียประโยชน์ แถมยังเปิดโอกาสให้คนเข้าถึงหนังสือได้ง่ายขึ้น ไม่ว่าจะซื้อจากร้านหนังสือ หรือไปอ่านที่ห้องสมุด ซึ่งคนเขียนและเจ้าของลิขสิทธิ์เองจะได้ประโยชน์

อ่านข่าวบ้านเขาแล้วก็อดรำพึงถึงบ้านเรามั่งไม่ได้
"เมื่อไรหนอ บ้านเราจะมีการสแกนหนังสือภาษาไทยจากห้องสมุดและทำดัชนีเนื้อหาอย่างเป็นล่ำเป็นสันเสียบ้างนะ"

เรื่องน่าสังเวชของคนในดงขมิ้นที่ยังมีกิเลสหนา

อ่านข่าวเรื่อง กองธรรมสนามหลวง ถึงขนาดต้องมีมาตราการพิเศษ กันข้อสอบรั่ว ในการพิมพ์ข้อสอบนักธรรมชั้นตรี สำหรับสนามสอบ ๑๐๒๗ แห่งแล้ว ผมก็อดรู้สึกระเหี่ยใจไม่ได้
นี่ขนาดการสอบของพระและเณร นะ แสดงให้เห็นว่า ปุถุชนกิเลสหนาในผ้าเหลืองเมืองไทยนั้นมีอยู่พอสมควร ขนาดจะสอบความรู้ง่ายๆ ก็ยังโกง

อ่านข่าวได้ที่ มติชน

ยิ่งเมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ ผมได้อ่านจากที่ครูบาอาจารย์ที่เคารพของผมรูปหนึ่งท่านพูดกับศิษย์จำนวนหนึ่งว่า ถึงขนาดภิกษุมีพรรษามากบางรูปเอาลายเซ็นของพระผู้ใหญ่ที่อาพาธอยู่ตั้งตำแหน่งให้ตนเองก็ยังมี หรือว่าวัดต่างจังหวัดส่งเรื่องไปขออนุมัติ ถ้าไม่ส่งเงินไปให้ด้วยสักสองแสนบาทก็เงียบเสียก็มี  

สำหรับภิกษุผู้มีสมณศักดิ์บางรูปเหล่านั้น ผมไม่มีมีความเคารพเลย ถือว่าเป็นอลัชชีในผ้าเหลือง กลับรู้สึกสมเพช

ผมเคารพเฉพาะพระอริยสงฆ์เท่านั้น 

News of caterpillar infestation in Petchaburi

There is a Thai news report today about millions of itchy caterpillar of unknown insect species are destroying crops in a village in Ban Laem district, Phetchaburi province, Thailand.
The body of each greyish-black caterpillar contain strips of 2 spike spots that cause skin inflammation and infected wounds. Villagers said the caterpillars are resistant to insecticides and they had to prevent them from entering their homes. They also try to remove the hemp sesbania plants (Seabania javanica) that they reside.

I think spreading of an unknown insect's caterpillars is another sign of ecological imbalance.
I also wonder if an outbreak of the insect from this caterpillar will come next ?

For years, I have observed another phenomenon, i.e. excessive number of pigeons in various suburban areas, I believe due to lack of birds of prey, like falcons, in most areas of Thailand. That is another sign.

ยศช้างขุนนางพระ

มีเพื่อนส่งอีเมลต่อมาให้ เพราะตัวเองไม่ได้ใช้เฟซบุ้คส์ คือ มีความเห็นของ ส. ศิวรักษ์ เขียนบทความเสนอว่า รัฐบาลควรเสนอให้ท่าน ป.อ. ปยุตโต (พระพรหมคุณาภรณ์) เลื่อนเป็น สมเด็จพระพุฒาจารย์ องค์ใหม่แทน สมเด็จฯ วัดสระเกศ ที่เพิ่งถึงมรณภาพ ก็เลยจะเขียนเป็นหมายเหตุเรื่องนี้เอาไว้เฉยๆ

ผมเห็นด้วยในเรื่องนี้ แม้ปกติความเห็นเรื่องอื่นๆ อาจจะไม่ได้เห็นด้วยกับท่าน

อย่างไรก็ดี ผมเข้าใจเอาว่า สุขภาพของท่านเจ้าคุณฯ ไม่ค่อยดีมาตลอด เร็วๆ นี้ก็ได้ยินว่าท่านไปรักษาตัวต่างประเทศ และที่สำคัญ นักวิชาการผู้เชี่ยวชาญพระพุทธธรรมอย่างท่านก็คงไม่สนใจปราถนาในเรื่องโลกามิสอย่าง "ยศช้าง ขุนนางพระ"

และผมก็ไม่สนใจว่ารัฐบาลจะ"ไม่ทำ"อะไรในเรื่องนี้หรือไม่

Shrimp mass migration by walking

There is an interesting biological phenomenon of shrimp walking on a rocky terrain toward the water origin on a mountain as reported in a Thai news.  Annual parading of millions of shrimps at night occured from mid August to September in the Kang Lamduan waterfall, Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani province.

The old Pagoda at Wat Chamdevi, Lamphun

Wat Chamdevi or วัดจามเทวี is the monastery bult by Queen Chamdevi, or พระนางจามเทวี , the founder of Lamphun.

The Queen built the city of Lamphun ลำพูน in B.E. 1204, or year CE 661). The Buddhist monastery was bulit in year 755 (B.E. 1298), almost 13 centuries ago.

She was a Princess from Lavo (now Lopburi). When she became 60 years old, she gave up the throne to her elder son and became a Buddhist nun and practice meditation at this temple. She passed away when she was 92 years old.

An old stupa, where bones and ashes of the former Queen was interred, was built by her sons. The top structure was gold plated. After centuries, the top was broken off, so villagers called วัดกู่กุด   which means "the temple of the truncated pagoda".  Official name of the pagoda is Phra Jedi Suwanna Jungote or พระเจดีย์สุวรรณจังโกฏ which means 'the pagoda with gold plates'.  I suppose this might be the start of the tradition of why pagodas in northen Thailand are mostly gold (or brass) plated.

I had visited this temple several times. Recently I went to Lumphun again and stayed at a hotel across the street from the temple, Lamphun Will Hotel, there is an old picture of the stupa in my room, which I took a picture. I would like to put it up here to compare with the recent pictures I took.

I also put up a picture of her statue here. She is still revered by the people of Lamphun. Garlands, flowers, colorful clothes are often offered to her statue.

Remnants of a WWII-era Hayabusa Ki-43 discovered in Pathum Thani

Remnants of a Hayabusa Ki-43 Japanese fighter was recently (June 2013) discovered in Pathum Thani province, Thailand, not far from the site that a US P51 Mustang fighter was discovered few years earlier.  Apparently they were in a dog fight and both went down during WWII. During that time the Royal Thai Army's air corps also had this type of fighter aircraft so it is not clear whether this plane was piloted by a Thai pilot or Japanese pilot.  A label found indicated that the plane was manufactured in 1943.

Thailand Buddhism week 2013 (B.E. 2556)

Last week was Buddhism week or สัปดาห์พระพุทธศาสนา in Thailand, to commemorate the Visakha Bucha day วิสาขบูชา (full moon night of Buddha worship in the 6th (Indian) month of Vesak). This year the full moon night was May 24, 2013, (B.E. 2556).  It was this similar full-moon nights of Visak month (in different years) when he was born (80 years B.B.E.), enlightened (45 years B.B.E.), and entered Parinirvana (B.E. 0 or ~ 543 B.C.), around 26 centuries ago.

There was a big event in the Phrameru ground, now known as Sanam Luang (Royal field) near the grand palace in Bangkok (Krung Thep).  The King kindly provided the Buddha's relics for public worship for a week. There were also exhibitions, and Tipitaka readings, chanting, and fund-raisings.  

I took pictures of old Tipitaka scriptures, Pali language written in Thai alphabets, including the palm-leaf version คัมภีร์ใบลาน of King Rama I, early Bangkok era (over 2 centuries ago), and the first printed version in modern book-set form over a hundred years ago during the reign of King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn).

ข่าววันนี้ออกมาว่า ซีพี ผู้ได้รับใบอนุญาต (ไลเซนส์) ดำเนินกิจการ ร้านค้าปลีก 7-11 ในประเทศไทย กำลังดำเนินการเพื่อจะซื้อกิจการ Macro ในประเทศไทยและประเทศอื่นๆ ในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ด้วยราคาสูงลิ่ว ถึง ๑๘๘,๐๐๐ ล้านบาท สะกิดใจผม

ในส่วนตัวผม ก็เห็นว่า การที่บริษัทของ "คนไทย" จะได้เข้าซื้อกิจการของบริษัท "ต่างชาติ" ก็ดูมีผลดี (แม้ว่าผลเสียซึ่งก็อาจจะมี คนไทยก็ยังไม่ได้คิดกัน) โปรดสังเกตเครื่องหมายคำพูดที่ผมใส่ไว้ด้วย เพราะว่ามันมีนัยที่ซ่อนอยู่ แต่ว่าผมจะงดไม่พูดในที่นี้

อย่างไรก็ดี ผมสังเกตประเด็นจากข่าวที่อ่านเจอว่ามีเนื้อความที่ขาดหายไปจากข่าวนั้น หากว่าไปเทียบเนื้อความกับข่าวคล้ายๆ กัน คือข่าวการควบรวมกิจการ หรือซื้อกิจการทั้งหมดของบริษัทข้ามชาติในต่างประเทศที่ผมเคยผ่านตามา สิ่งที่หายไปนั่นก็บอกอะไรผมบางอย่าง และนั่นก็คือ ความจริงที่ว่าเมืองไทยเราไม่มีมาตราการการตรวจสอบ หรือกลไกป้องกันการผูกขาดตลาด

เท่าที่เคยได้อ่านมามาก ในต่างประเทศ เมื่อบริษัทใหญ่ๆ จะเข้าซื้อกิจการของคู่ค้า ทำให้เกิดการผูกขาดเกิดขึ้น ครอบครองตลาดเกินว่า 80% (ถ้าจำไม่ผิด) จะต้องมีการตรวจสอบ ทั้งในสหรัฐ หรือ ในยุโรป บางบริษัทใหญ่มากเกินไปยังโดนสั่งให้ขายกิจการออกไปบางส่วนเสียด้วยซ้ำ

ที่ผมพูดมานี้ ไม่ได้มีเจตนาต่อต้านการขยายกิจการของบริษัทเอกชน แต่ทว่า เราต้องยอมรับความจริงว่า บริษัทเอกชนมีวัตถุประสงค์หลักคือทำกำไร การกระทำของบริษัทเอกชนบางกรณี อาจจะส่งผลกระทบต่อสังคมได้มาก ยิ่งบริษัทใหญ่มากก็ยิ่งมีผลกระทบมาก และอาจจะรุนแรง สังคมต้องมีการรับรู้และให้ความเห็น และถ้าสังคมจะโดนกระทบ สังคมต้องมีกลไกที่จะยับยั้งการดำเนินการบางอย่างได้ หรือกำหนดเงื่อนไขให้ปฏิบัติ

หลายสิบปีก่อน เมืองไทยไม่เคยมีบริษัทใหญ่ๆ มากนัก แต่ตอนนี้เปลี่ยนไปแล้ว ผมคิดว่า ควรที่เราจะต้องคิดว่าต้องเริ่มคิดถึงกลไกป้องกันการผูกขาดกันแล้ว

New Thai parliament building construction to go ahead

Today, there is a Thai news about construction of the new parliament building for Thailand. 

That the cabinet has been informed of the won bidding price of 12.280 Billion Baht, barely 0.05% lower than its mean reference construction cost of 12.287 Billion.

I think the chosen location in Bangkok is a bad choice. The riverside location is prone to flood.  It would be wiser if they would build a new government administrative city somewhere in high land area and build it there. (But I should have known that Thai politicians generally are not wise, except when dealing with their private benefits.) I think this project is another a big waste of money, just like the costly car excise tax refund, and the very costly rice grain pawing project. 

Also I don't really like the design. The reason is that, in Thai traditional architecture, there were (aristocratic) 'hierarchy' of buildings. Namely, Buddhist temples, the King's Grand palace, others' palaces, etc.  Having a highly revered (Buddhist) pagoda structure in this design, the archtecs' aimed to raise spirituality of the place used by politicians by having this structure is a weird logic. Some young Thai people have even said in some bulletin boards that the structure looks rather like a crematorium.

Will Bangkokian get a "lamppost" as the new governor ?

There will be a Bangkok gubernatorial election (actually his status is more or less a mayor) this weekend. Former PM Thaksin, now in exiled, said earlier that if he would file a lampost as a candidate, it would be elected. So I am curious if his candidate would win or not. We 'll know in 3 days. I will vote for sure.  Polling has indicated a tight race between the former Bangkok governor from Democrat Party and the candidate from Puer Thai Party.

I am more concerned about the excessive money extravagance scheme that Mr. Thaksin's candidate was trying to sell to the lower income and less-educated red-shirt voters, such as free-of-charge buses.  Imagine more of the vacant buses roaming around the city with not many passengers and burning fuel in the traffic jams? That would put up lot of financial pressure to the public. I just think that he is the type of politicians who are irresponsible. They think they can borrow money and spend the money as they wish in order to get votes, and benefit their associates' businesses along the way, but they have no regard as to whom would have to pay back those public debt in the future, i.e. our children.

BTW, I love this comics showing the PT candidate as a Trojan horse, and the PM pushing it from the back.

Update: Mar 3, 2013, 6:15 pm. Bangkok 's time.
From unofficial counts, over 50% of votes turned in so far, the former Bangkok governor from the Democrat Party looks like he is a winner. I am a bit relieved that we won't have "a lamppost" to burn our tax money and burden our future children.

Update: 6:20 pm.  The PT candidate and the PM have announced that they lose the gubernatorial election.

Got some books from Mahachula Bannakarn bookstore

I went to the area in Bangkok known as "Prachan Pier" area yesterday afternoon to buy Thai philosophical and Buddhist books at Mahachula Bannakarn bookstore near Wat Mahathat, within a walking distance from the Grand Palace.  It is perhaps the best bookstore for Thai Buddhist books (mostly Thai but some English language, locally produced, are available).  I believe the bookstore is affiliated with MCU (Mahachulalongkornrajavidayalaya University) and are regularly patronized by Buddhist monks.

I bought 17 books today, some are about Mahayana, and some philosophical (Buddhist viewpoint) books.   These are on top of some two hundred Buddhist books I have purchased before.  I have an idea on the topic I want to write about, but first I need to make sure I know what Thai people have talked or read about. Now is my reading time.

Sickening side of Thai politics

I read this article (in Thai) about how many of Thailand's members of the House of Representatives gain their wealth from various channels and I feel aghast and sick of it.

Thailand literary stuff

I love the article (in Thai) interviewing a National Artist elect for Thai literary of 2012 (B.E. 2555), Makut Oradee. He is a writer and editor of a publishing house. He established and taught literary and librarian courses at certain Thai universities. His opinions on the need to establish National Book Institute and how to improve literary rate among Thai strike my chord.  I agree with him. So far, unfortunately, no Thai government agency is interested in this idea. 

By the way, congratulations to him. I have enjoyed reading quality books from his publishing house.
