Developing visions of a Thai University

I just found a good summary (in Thai) by Prof. Vicharn Panich of a recent meeting of Mahidol University 's deans and the University councilors in another brainstorming session to develop visions for the University 's improvement. (link above) Inspiring.

A fond memory with my Suankularb school 's pin

Our Mor Sor 5 class of Suankularb in B.E. 2518 was the last to use pin on the right side chest of our white shirt, above the Sor Kor abbreviation. I remember well that I felt very proud of it, which symbolised the wearer as a pre-university high school student. Today, students' shirt has a (ugly looking) simplified pink and blue logo sewn onto that former pin position instead. I just found my pin 2 days ago so I took a picture of my well-kept one. So far the pin is already 32 yr old. I guess current students have not seen one, unless they have a museum somewhere at the school, which I doubt.

Commencement Day at Chulalongkorn University

It 's jovial day for new graduates. I have been to this alma mater of mine off and on few times a year for various purposes, usually to attend a meeting or to give lecture, but not on this atmosphere for decades. A relative of mine was handed a Ph.D. from our beloved Princess today. Perhaps our family is quite eccentric: unlike thousands of families, we gave no flower or doll to the graduate at all. Those gifts were considered nonsense, or perhaps we valued too much on money. After taking some pictures, I went back to work.

No official religion for Thailand yet

According to the news, drafters of the new B.E. 2550 Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand decided not to include an article specifying Buddhism as the official religion of the country.

Among the reasons, the King of Thailand has been required by law and past constitututions to be Buddhist already (although he must support all major religions and a Thai is free to choose his own religion), and the fact that majority (90%) of Thais registered as Buddhists, so they reckoned that there was no need to write down. Also Buddhism 's doctrines do not practice "discrimination" against people of different faith ( but it 's not true the other way round).

Oh, I 'd like to point out that it 's that Buddhists' open-minded attitute among the drafters that has caused them to decided as such.

Personally, it does not matter much. In the mean time, Buddhism will be o.k. Constutution will be just another temporary law that will not last long. But I think I know the major motives of many Buddhists as to why they/we wanted a statement to be written down about the kingdom's religion and I want to put it down here.

Buddhism is the only religion which emphasizes on "intelligent", not on pure faith like some "you name it". And Abhidhamma contains a lot of logical reasoning in its extremely profound metaphysics and philosophy. Over a millinium ago, hundreds of thousands of Buddhists and monks in ancient India kingdoms were killed by invading muslim army. Thai Buddhist scholars remember this history quite well and they do not want a chance that similar catastrophy might happen again in the future. So they try every way to have assurance. That 's just a part of their ways to help save Buddhism from being replaced by more proactive religions that have keep on advertising their bllind faiths in the region in the past few decades.

รู้สึกโง่ๆยังไงชอบกล

ไม่รู้ว่าไปคลิกเว็บอะไรเข้า ลืมไปแล้ว มันมีป๊อบอัพขึ้นมาด้านหลัง ไม่เห็นแต่แรก เป็นข้อความว่า ขออภัย จะต้องเซ็นเซอร์เพราะเป็นเว็บไม่เหมาะสม โดยกระทรวงไอซีที อะไรประมาณนั้น ทำให้รู้สึกว่า ตัวเองโดนหาว่าโง่เสียเต็มประดา ต้องให้มีเจ้าหน้าที่มาเซ็นเซอร์อินเตอร์เน็ตด้วย

ช่วยไม่ได้เพราะมาเกิดเป็นพลเมืองของประเทศด้อยพัฒนาและประชากรด้อยการศึกษา

What is nirvana ?

I just found an article at Howstuffworks about nirvana. It 's an attempt to explain to lay (western) people what nirvana is. I found that the writer is quite informed of what he wrote, nevertheless, my feeling is that his explanation contains a lot of errors. I 'll try to explain my understanding instead here.

Nirvana is a state that certain developed minds can perceive. It 's not a state that can be comprehended by lay people.

Mind consists of several emotions mixed into one, every moment (and that it never sit still, mixed of emotions vary all the time). Whenever the so called path of mind, that occurs much like twinkle light, on and off at very fast pace, are without 3 of the emotions (I use emotion to roughly represent Jetasic or Chetacic: I m not sure how Pali scholars officially spell this work in Roman characters), then the paths of mind could perceive that state. It could be done during a deep concentration, or deep meditation, to the level of Jana state.

I 'll give an analogy. Suppose you have a gardening tool in your home that you daily use. You did not realize that your parents borrowed it from your neighbor so you have enjoyed using it for several years. After you know later that it 's not yours, then you simply and promptly stop using it and walked over to the neighbor and returned it right away. Nirvana is like that. After one realizes that the body and the mind (or soul) are not actually yours, they are just like other entities of the Universe, the selfness that lay people keep in their feeling are just illusion, they then quit holding of the 3 emotions (desire, anger, illusion). The result is then total hapiness, if actually there is no "you", then there is no one to receive suffering, and one does not crave for things since there is no desire left. The Enlightened one (Buddha) and his Arahants have no such 3 emotions, so when they physically die later, the path of mind spheres stop after death, and there is no reincarnation, since there is no longer lingering desire to be born again.

I am still a low-level student of abhidhamma (Buddhist Metaphysics), and that is the best I could explain this concept.

Thai agency promotes Open Office usage

A major R&D and granting agency of Thailand, NSTDA, has recently started promoting the use of open source softwares, notably the Open Office suite, witin its organization of few thousand strong researchers. The purpose is to reduce the cost of commercial software licenses and to prevent any use of unauthorized copied softwares. Training courses have been regulary organized.

This is good news. I myself have been using open offices for years. With the current use of Mac platform, I mainly use NeoOffice which is quite satisfactory. For my Ubuntu linux box, I intend to use only text editor, such as emacs instead since I found there are some display differences, i.e. different font sizes, when transfer documents between Mac 's NeoOffice and Linux 's Open Office.

คำพิพากษาของ คณะตุลาการรัฐธรรมนูญ

เมื่อวาน กระแสความสนใจการเมืองของคนทั้งประเทศพลอยทำให้ผมก็หลงไปดูทีวีไปหลายชั่วโมงหลังกลับจากทำงาน ที่มีการถ่ายทอดทีวีปกติทุกช่อง ฟังๆดูก็เห็นว่า ศาลฯได้พิจารณาทุกประเด็น อธิบายอย่างละเอียดได้หมด ฟังแล้วก็เกิดความสบายใจ ถ้าคนส่วนมากในประเทศได้ดู ก็น่าจะเห็นสอดคล้องกันเป็นส่วนใหญ่ว่า คำตัดสินนั้นก็ดีแล้ว ความขัดแย้งในสังคมไทยอาจจะค่อยๆเบาบางลงก็ได้ ยังไงก็หวังไว้อย่างนั้นแหละ

ส่วนที่ผมชอบใจก็ใกล้ๆก็ตอนท้ายที่ศาลแถลงเรื่องตัดสินยุบพรรค ก็เห็นว่าเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดนั้นศาลอธิบายได้สมจริง ได้ให้ความเห็นที่ถูกต้องของวิญญูชนผู้มีปัญญาและเที่ยงธรรม ออกมา

จนกระทั่งเลยเที่ยงคืนก็ยังดูความเห็นคนต่างๆต่อ กว่าจะรู้สึกตัวว่าเผลอหลงไป ส่งจิตไปสนใจเรื่องที่ไม่น่าจะสนใจอีกแล้ว

ย้อนกล่าวกรณีเรื่องที่เกิดขึ้นอีกนิด ผมก็เห็นสรุปว่า สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นเป็นไปด้วยเหตุปัจจัย มีเหตุโลภ โทสะ โมหะ มันก็มีการกระทำกรรม และมีวิบากเกิดตามมาเป็นธรรมดา

มหาปิรามิดแห่งอิยิปต์เป็นหินหล่อขึ้นมา

ดูจากลิงก์ก็แล้วกัน น่าอัศจรรย์ ในอนาคต หากมีปูนชนิดใหม่ขึ้นมา น่าจะช่วยลดการใช้พลังงานในการผลิต และลดปัญหาโรคร้อนได้บ้าง

Tools to help you get things done

I have tried several free softwares to help me get things done, including those for making Gantt chart, tasks reminders, etc, but did not seems to fit with my procrastinating and messy behavior. Now I just found a wiki tool called GTDTiddlyWiki. It 's easy to use, and does not bug me too much. Will give it a try. ...

Few days afterward, I found that GTDTiddlyWiki does not work well with Safari browser, my favorite one.

Pattaya by night

Here are some pictures of Pattaya by night, near the boat-shaped A-One hotel. I think most Thai people don't tour that area in the evening. It 's the area patroned by westerners. There are a number of bars, mostly lit by pink color fluorescent lamps, with mostly dark skin bar girls. I don't think I actually should call them "girls" since some of them look like they are already in their 40s while some of them are transexual ones. :-)

ค่าเข้าชม ๕๐๐ บาท ไม่แพง ถ้าถือว่าช่วยเขาสร้างและซ่อม มีโชว์ของโลมาไทยให้ดูฟรีด้วย

The Sanctury of Truth is the World 's largest wooden castle full of Thai and other oriental style wooden sculptures. It 's located in Na Kluea north of Pattaya. It 's constructed out entirely of teak, red wood, and other hard woods. It has been built for almost 30 years, and will need at least 15 more years to be complete. It 's a worthwhile visit. I paid 500 Baht for entry fee, considering this a small money to help them build and maintain such a hugh 100 meter high castle.

หลักสูตรในมหาวิทยาลัยไทยวุ่นวายอยู่

ผมเผอิญได้รับเชิญให้ความเห็นการปรับปรุงหลักสูตรปริญญาตรีของภาควิชาหนึ่งในมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งหนี่ง เท่าที่ทราบตอนนี้มีการปรับปรุงหลักสูตรทุกห้าปีในทุกคณะทุกโปรแกรมทุกมหาวิทยาลัย ซึ่งก็เป็นเรื่องที่ดี แต่จากการพูดคุยกับอาจารย์ที่นั่น ได้ความรู้ว่่า มหาวิทยาลัยส่วนมากมีปัญหาอยู่เหมือนกัน โดยเฉพาะเรื่องวิชาทั่วๆไป อย่างเช่นหลักสูตรทางสายวิทยาศาสตร์และวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ มักจะโดนบังคับว่า ต้องให้เด็กไปเรียนวิชาทั่วไปถึง ๓๐ หน่วยกิต ทำให้โดนบีบให้ไปตัดหน่วยกิตในทางวิชาการที่เป็นเรื่องซีเรียสทางวิชาชีพของเขา

จากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัว ความที่เป็นหนอนหนังสือ ผมคิดว่าสำหรับคนอย่างผมเอง ถ้าย้อนวัยกลับไปเรียนใหม่ ผมไม่จำเป็นต้องไปเรียนวิชาทั่วไปมากถึง ๓๐ หน่วย โดยเฉพาะถ้าเป็นวิชาอะไรบ้าบอที่ไม่ใช่เป็นศาสตร์ที่ล้ำลีก ไปหาหนังสืออ่านเองก็ยังได้แบบที่บางมหาวิทยาลัยเปิด

มหาวิทยาลัยคงอยากให้นักศึกษา(ในใจผมอยากเรียกว่า นักเรียนอยู่ดี = students) เรียนอะไรให้รู้กว้างๆ ผมก็เห็นดีด้วย แต่ว่า ในทางปฏิบัตินั้น การจัดการรวบยอดโดยมหาวิทยาลัยให้เด็กไปลงวิชาหน่อมแน้มไร้สาระ ที่หลักสูตรต่างๆโดนบีบให้เลือกไปลงวิชากลางของมหาวิทยาลัยที่ตัวเลือกมีไม่มากนัก เป็นการไปผิดเส้นทางอีกเหมือนกัน และไม่ได้ทำให้เด็กที่จะเป็นกำลังของประเทศในอนาคตฉลาดหรือรอบรู้ขึ้นมากนักแต่อย่างใด

New tyres for my old car

This year, rainy season started earlier than predicted and it has been raining heavily daily. My old reliable BMW has been using the current tyres for slightly over 2 yr but the threads are almost gone. So I had its tyres changed today. There was a little problem at the tyre shop, because it 's difficult to find the exact wide size ones I have been using, even in the capital like Bangkok.

I could ask the shop 's owner to find them from nearby stores but I could end up getting old-stocked unsold tyres, which would not be good for me. In a hot country like Thailand we need newly manufactured ones, since they tend to stiff up fast due to the heat. Moreover, the slightly wider size (1 cm) I used to would cost a lot more. After weighing the option, I decided to order the more narrowed tyres that a Toyota Corona Altis would typically use. It saved me a few thousand Bahts too since Toyota is abundant in Thailand, and thus tyres produced for them are plenty and cheaper.

After getting behind the wheel, I could feel that steering is a lot lighter and my car now can change lane more swiftly with the narrower tyres. New tyres also gave me a rubber cushion feeling I had not experienced for over a year.

Now I am ready to hit the road to several far away places in the coming weeks.

หนังสือน่าอ่านอีกเล่ม (2)

วันนี้ได้หนังสือฟรีส่งมาจากมติชนสองเล่ม ไม่รู้เนื่องในโอกาสอะไร ไม่ค่อยจะจำ สงสัยเพราะต่ออายุสมาชิกศิลปวัฒนธรรมไปละมัง ดูเหมือนจะบอกรับมาสักสิบปีได้แล้ว

ได้มาสองเล่ม ก็อดไม่ได้ ว่าจะอ่านนิดๆ เลยอ่านยาวจนจบหนึ่งเล่ม ก็คือ หนังสือที่แปลมาจาก หนังสือของ ลินุส ทอร์วาลดส์ ชื่อ จัสฟอร์ฟัน

ในชื่อไทยว่า เอามัน แปลโดยนามปากกว่าว่า eS_U พิมพ์โดยสำนักพิมพ์มติชน นั่นแหละ
น่าสนใจมาก เพราะผมเป็นทั้ง Unix and Linux User มาก่อน แม้ว่าตอนนี้จะมาเป็น Mac User แล้วก็ตาม ผมจึงเข้าใจที่เขาอธิบายเรื่อง kernel อะไรในโอเอสได้ดีพอควร และเข้าใจเรื่อง Open Source มากขึ้น และผมก็เห็นบางขณะของผมที่มีความสนใจอะไรคล้ายๆกับเขา (เพียงแต่เขากัดติดมากกว่าเท่านั้น)
ได้เข้าใจปรัชญาของเขาที่เขาพยายามอธิบายด้วย เรื่องความหมายของชีวิต และวิวัฒนาการของอารยธรรมมนุษย์เกิดเพราะอะไร ก็นับว่าเขามีมุมมองที่ฉลาดดี แต่ความเห็นส่วนตัวผมนั้นใช้พุทธธรรมอธิบายได้ดีกว่า ล้ำลึกกว่าอยู่แล้ว

Good interview of Thai Science Minister

I like this interview, just published in the English language Bangkok Post. It clearly showed the Thai educated (English-literate) circle that Prof. Yongyuth Yuthavong is frank, smart, and up-to-date Science Minister. (Unlike some of his uneducated & unintelligent predecessors in the same position in recent cabinets)

คนใกล้ตัวซื้อมาได้สองสามเดือนแล้วกระมัง วันนี้เพิ่งมีโอกาสเข้าไปในห้องทำงานของเขา ไปหยิบมาอ่านที่ห้องทำงานของผม กะว่าจะอ่านสักครู่ เผลอแผล็บเดียว หลายชั่วโมงผ่านไป จบแล้ว เกือบเที่ยงคืน งานการที่ค้างคาไม่ต้องทำกันพอดี

แต่อ่านไปก็พีงพอใจมาก ปลื้มมาก บางช่วงก็หัวเราะ (ต้องชาววัดจึงจะเข้าใจ คนธรรมดาคงไม่ค่อยขำเท่าไร) บางช่วงผมเกิดปีติขนลุกซู่ ท่านมีชีวิตที่เรียบง่าย เป็นพระที่เคร่งพระวินัย เป็นปราชญ์ เยี่ยมจริงๆ

ได้แนวคิดดีๆ มาเตือนสติตนเองหลายข้อ

เป็นหนังสือที่ดีมาก อยากให้ลูกอ่าน แต่มันจะอ่านหรือเปล่าก็ไม่รู้ ตอนนี้คงจะยังหรอก ยังเด็กไป

A Thai book, entitled "A Way of Sophist" reflecting the life, personality, works of the expert Thai Buddhist scholar, the venerable Bhikku P.A. Payutto, in 140 short easy to read mini-chapters. His charming personality, in conjunction with his meticulous curiosity is mildly entertaining, mind-opening, as provided good example of his simple life as a Buddhist monk. Highly recommended. (In Thai language only)

สถานการณ์ภาคใต้

อ่านดูข่าวแต่ละวันมีแต่เรื่องเศร้าใจ คนเลวๆจำนวนไม่มากนักกำลังปั่นหัวคนในชาติให้เกิดโทสะจากการกระทำที่อำมหิตรายวัน คนในสังคมไทยส่วนต่างๆจะทนได้อีกนานเท่าใด เป็นเรื่องน่าห่วง

เมื่อผมรู้สึกตัว ดูจิตเห็นอารมณ์เศร้าหมองที่มาเยือน เห็นจิตมันเข้าไปรับอารมณ์ แล้วก็ค่อยปล่อยวาง
แต่คนในสังคมส่วนมากน่าจะปล่อยวางไม่ได้ มันก็จะทำให้เกิดความโกรธในหมู่ชนมากขึ้นๆ

ผมมองในด้านหนึ่งก็คิดว่าเป็นกรรมของคนที่ต้องมาเผชิญ ทั้งในคนที่อยู่ภาคนั้นและที่ต้องไปทำงานหรือไปมีหน้าที่ที่นั่น กรรมทั้งในระยะเวลาไม่นาน อาจจะไม่กี่ปีก่อนหรือกี่สิบปีก่อน เป็นกรรมของคนอื่นในสังคมที่ก่อไว้ทิ้งให้คนอื่นมารับกรรมแทน กับตามหลักพุทธศาสนาที่กรรมของแต่ละคนเองที่มาส่งผลให้ประสบเหตุ โดยอาจจะเนื่องมาจากผลของกรรมในอดีตชาติ

Mouse problem, not small after all

If there is anything I do not like about Apple 's product, it 's the Mighty mouse. After using it for a few months, I finally quitted using it and came back to a small, cheap, Signo clickwheel mouse for a regular PC. Why ? The Apple mouse was too stiff and I had to press hard with my finger each time to click, thousands of click each day and consequently I have had inflamed joint of the index finger on my right hand and it never get any better since I use my Mac computer everyday. That 's the major reason. A second reason is that the tiny scroll button made it difficult to control Google Earth application. A third reason is that my friends complained of the dirt then accumulate on the tiny scroll button and it 's difficult to clean. (I never had the 3rd problem since I learned of it in advance, and thus I washed my hand cleaned before using it.)
