To fly or to drive ?
I have a meeting to attend in a southern city in Thailand in the next few months ahead. I was pondering if I should fly there by using AirAsia but decide that I do not want to risk losing money. Now that Thaksin is gone, there is a chance that Thai AirAsia may lose its flight license from the next Thai government in the next few months since it is now foreign-majority owned. An alternative for me is to use One2Go. Nok Air does not fly there: too bad. Perhaps I should drive my BMW workhorse instead: it 's just one day drive anyway.

Thailand starts to increase scientific computational power
I heard that Thai Grid project just purchased a teraflop cluster for scienfitic & research computation. If I remember correctly, it has 200 nodes (with 2x Xeon dual core cpu, thus effectively equivalent to 800 cpu) Anyone can request to accesss it for free, at least for now. Yesterday, I also heard that BIOTEC is planning to buy another scientific cluster in the coming few months, in additional to their existing bioinformatic clusters. It 's exciting to see that computational research is now taking off well in Thailand.

Quite a traffic jam for me today
I was driving home this evening, along the Paholyothin highway heading back into the city from the northern part of Bangkok was unexpectedly clogged at Km. 36. I was suspecious and guessed of what had happened. Trucks and cars had to slow down when they passed through a group of parked M48A5 tanks guarding the north highway. After a few minutes, I then found the the real cuprit. The tanks were sitting on the road side so they did not really obstract the traffic. It 's actually a few cars which parked near the tank column and a few dozens of Thai people and kids who stopped to take pictures with the tanks' crews as well as slowed down cars had created the minor traffic jam. I was not in a bad mood too much. Earlier during lunch time, a friend of mine had asked me jokingly if I had been out to take some pictures with the tanks yet. I replied to her, "No, not yet". Remembered that, I smiled as I continue driving pass the tank column.

Officials of some foreign governments did not have a clue when they criticized the coup in Thailand although some international news commentators seemed to get their analyses right.
In my view, situation in Thailand a year before was analogous to a coma patient, not only being infested with lots of blood sucking parasites, but also many of her crucial organs were failing to function while no immune system was working to get rid of the pests at all. That 's the situation of Thailand under the regime of Thaksin and his cronies. The new situation is like an unavoidable major operation where multiple surgeries would be done quickly and simulatenously. That 's why lots of people in Bangkok were joyous, quite surprisingly unexpected for foreigners. I believe the new situation has opened up only a good opportunity. Anything could not get worse: only getting better.
We 'll see how things develop in the next few months. Only time can prove those them wrong. I truely believe my instict won't be wrong. In the meantime, I think I can do fine without a chance to comment on some online news for a few weeks ahead.

Political situation in Thailand was unlocked by the coup on September 19
Today I can't resist writing on a topic I had always wanted to avoid. I want to make some historical remarks on recent Thailand's key event.
Majority of educated or well-informed Thais had wanted Thaksin removed from premiership for a few months without success. Thaksin Shinawatra had been hanging on as caretaking PM for too long, months longer than the 120 days stipulated by the current Thai consitutution. It took the last resort, a one-step backward by westerners' view, to unseat him. Now that the Thai armed-forces have staged a coup, the caretaking PM was announced out, to the delight of most Bangkokians. From now, various illegal irregularities under him would be surely be subjected to rectifications and legal punishments. Government officials would no longer feel under pressure to do their job by skirting around the laws to satisfy the former PM. (Some of those who did will be punished for sure.)
A minior point to note: I think the abrupt announcement of public holiday would adversely affect income of ten thousands of food vendors at various offices around Bangkok and perimeters. These people earn their living day by day, and surely they 're going to miss lots of customers and be broke for a few days.

Suvarnabhumi airport has started limited flight services
From Thai news sources, the new Bangkok International Airport has started its limited operation yesterday for some local and regional low-cost airlines, essentially without serious problem. Travelers like the new airport. In the next 13 days, full operation will start. I am glad that the full-service day is coming.
My own feeling is that the new airport might reach capacity of 100 million passengers per year in just a decade or less, thus it 's a good idea to keep the original Don Mueang Airport handy for future use. The day when two airports are needed will come to Bangkok. A third one, if needed few decades later, would need to be built in the Gulf of Thailand then.

กฏหมายไทยตามไม่ทันเรื่อง โนมินี
วันนี้ข่าวจากบางกอกโพสต์บอกว่า กฤษฎีกาสรุปแล้วว่า บริษัท ไทยแอร์เอเชีย หลังจากปรับโครงสร้างใหม่แล้ว ยังเป็นบริษัทคนไทยอยู่ แม้เทมาเส็กจะได้ไปครองจากบริษัทชิน แล้ว
ก็จริงตามตัวอักษรนั่นแหละ เด็กอมมือก็อาจจะยังรู้ด้วยซ้ำ แต่กฎหมายไทยไม่ก้าวหน้าเท่าของสิงคโปร์ ไม่รู้จักเรื่องโนมินี
ว่ากันว่า มีบริษัทต่างชาติหลายร้อยบริษัทเข้ามาจัดตั้งโนมีนีในไทย เพื่อเลี่ยงกฎหมาย ยกไว้คงเป็นพวกบริษัทไอ้กัน เพราะได้รับยกเว้น บริษัทอเมริกัน สามารถมาทำมาค้าขายในไทยได้โดยเสมือนหนึ่งมีสัญชาติไทยอยู่แล้ว (คิดเรื่องนี้แล้ว เมืองไทยก็ไม่ต่างจากปอโตริโก ที่มีสภาพด้อยกว่ารัฐหนึ่งของสหรัฐ ไม่ได้เป็นรัฐที่ ๕๑ เสียที)

ประเทศด้อยพัฒนากับประเทศพัฒนาแล้ว
เด็กในชนบทในประเทศสารขันธ์กำลังจะได้ US$ 130 hand-crank laptop ที่ลงระบบ Linux ในปีหน้า (แต่ไม่ใช่ไม่ดีนะ ดีพอใช้ เป็นระบบ Unix-like) แต่เด็กนักเรียนในสหรัฐฯ เริ่มได้ MacBook ราคา USD 1000 กันแล้ว แม้แต่ในโรงเรียนมัธยมที่อยู่ห่างจากบริษัท ไมโครซอฟต์ไปเพียง 30 km. นักเรียนราว ๔๘๐๐ คนก็ยังได้ใช้ OS-X Tiger (based on BSD Unix)
แต่ทว่า ผมว่าความแตกต่างสำคัญอยู่ที่ความพร้อมของซอฟต์แวร์ และ คอร์สแวร์ภาษาไทยต่างหากที่น่ากังวล มิใช่รูปลักษณ์ หรือสมรรถนะของเครื่อง จะเป็นรถอีแต๋นหรือรถเบนซ์ก็เป็นพาหนะพาไปสู่ที่หมายได้พอๆกัน (ในที่นี้คือการเรียนรู้)

Another day in my office in Thailand
My dual G5 cpu Power Mac desktop could not access the office's network today. It has been offed by over 1 week when I was away to attend a meeting outside. Interestingly, the problem turned out to be the fullly booked IP numbers in our floor. This is an inherent problem of IPv4 network: if you had more than 254 devices then you have a problem in your neighborhood. My G4 notebook that I routinely use as a workhorse has not detected any problem earlier because it has been using WiFi network all the time, and that uses another set of IP numbers reassigned by the wireless router in our group's room.
Today I already got a replacement battery for my G4 laptop from Unity Progress. Perhaps that 's among the first replacements in Thailand. (My G4 I bought 10 months ago was also among the first batch in its lot that arrived in Thailand.) Quite a quick replacement after I was told by the company last week that I might have to wait 2 more months to get the new battery from the Apple 's battery recall program. Mine was one of those 1.8 million batteries (manufactured by Sony) being recalled free of charge by Apple few weeks ago. Great service.

Will Thailand hold General Election in October ?
If Thailand will hold election in October 2006 at all, no party except TRT has started their advertisements yet. Perhaps they do think it will not be held in time for this October. (Budgeting wise, this will be bad for the government 's fiscal management since we have no functioning parliament to pass the budget now)
Looking around my district in the Bangkok city, there has been only big plastic posters (size around 1x2 meter) from a new-face candidate from Thai Rak Thai. Looks like he is running just to get recognition and TRT people know that he 's not likely to get elected anyway. One interesting point is that, there is no PM Thaksin's picture to be seen at all. Perhaps the PM wants to keep a low profile from Bangkokians for the election, hoping that his candidates will get more scores if his image is not pasted on the top right corner or standing shoulder to shoulder with each candidate as in the past elections.
Note:- I am posting this as a matter of fact to record eye-witness 's historical information, not trying to make any political statement here. (Ha, ha. Nevertheless, one can guess or even bet with very high probability score of what my political viewpoints is like. But I will stick with my own policy of non-politics blog here. :-) )

สนามบินสุวรรรณภูมิ

(By the way, this is info for non-Thai. The airport name is pronounced Su-wan-na-poom, from an old (few millenia) Pali name of continental Southeast Asia, meaning the golden land. The weird spelling was put up in order to preserve its Pali root)
A day after this blog was posted, a news came up that the former engineering scholars of King Anandamahidol Scholarships has a forum to express their view of the design of the airport, and all its past design problems. So I 'd like to add these some more.
Here I 'd like to record one instance of my long-held opinion on the dislike of the glass structure of the new airport. It 's going to be hot as hell and it will be extremely costly to chill down the glass terminals in sunny Bangkok (a.k.a. the largest single structure airport terminal in the World, 3 km long across). Watch for it. I think the stock price of AOT will be negatively affected if people figure out soon how much monthly electricity cost the company has to pay for the electicity, not to mention paying more to upgrade all the current structural deficiencies, including the lack of sufficient toilets and handicapped's facilities.

วินโดวส์วิสต้า จะออกเมื่อไร
ข่าวบอกว่า Vista จะออกราวเดือนมกราคม ๒๕๕๐ อเมซอนเปิดรับออร์เดอร์ล่วงหน้าแล้วด้วย สำหรับความเห็นของผมก็คือ มันแค่เป็นกลยุทธทางการตลาดของไมโครซอฟต์แค่นั้น ประชาชนผู้บริโภคคงไม่มีใครโง่ไปสั่ง vaporware ล่วงหน้ามาใช้หรอก ตอนนี้ได้ข่าวว่า RC1 ก็ยังคงไม่ค่อยสมบูรณ์ ผมประมวลความเห็นคนได้ว่า ถ้าออกมาได้จริงก็อาจจะไปมีนาคมโน่นเป็นอย่างเร็ว
แล้วพอถึงเวลา Apple ก็จะเกทับด้วยการออก Leopard หรือ OS-X version 10.5.0 ออกมา ซึ่งมีคุณสมบัติใหม่ๆเพียบ ในขณะที่วิสต้าก็จะเจอโรคเลื่อนอีกแน่นอน อันนี้เชื่อขนมกินได้เลย
ดังนั้่นผมก็จะเตรียมอัพเกรด Tiger เป็น Leopard อยู่แล้วในกลางปีหน้า ที่ต้องทิ้งระยะหน่อย กะว่าต้องให้ซอฟต์แวร์ที่ใช้ไม่มีปัญหา คงต้องรออย่างน้อยรุ่น 10.5.3 ไปแล้วนั่นแหละ เพื่อให้แน่ใจว่า ฟอนต์ภาษาไทยจะไม่มีการออกอาการสระลอยอีก และคงถือโอกาสเปลี่ยนฮาร์ดดิสด้วยเสียเลย เล็งไว้ว่าต้องอย่างน้อยเป็นขนาด 120 GB
แล้วพอถึงเวลา Apple ก็จะเกทับด้วยการออก Leopard หรือ OS-X version 10.5.0 ออกมา ซึ่งมีคุณสมบัติใหม่ๆเพียบ ในขณะที่วิสต้าก็จะเจอโรคเลื่อนอีกแน่นอน อันนี้เชื่อขนมกินได้เลย

ลูกศิษย์คนหนึ่งของผมแจ้งว่า เขามีปัญหาว่าไวรัสติดคอมพิวเตอร์ที่บ้านงอมแงม ผมเลยต้องงัดความรู้สมัยใช้เครื่องพีซีระบบวินโดวส์ตอบไป บอกเขาไปว่า ให้ไปดาวน์โหลด โปรแกรมพวกนี้มาลงเสีย

๒ โปรแกรมกำจัดสปายแวร์ ที่ชื่อ Spybot
๓ โปรแกรมไฟล์วอลล์ ที่ชื่อ ZoneAlarm
และก็แนะนำเขาไปว่า ต่อไปให้ไปซื้อ Apple MacBook มาใช้เสีย เพราะไม่มีไวรัส ไม่มีสปายแวร์ ราคาไม่แพงมากนัก รวมซอฟต์แวร์มาเสร็จ ที่ขาดเหลือยังไปดาวน์โหลดมาได้จากอินเทอร์เน็ตอีก
