Bangkok situation

Most people living in Bangkok want the violent protest by the red-shirt people to end quickly. The nation's economy has been crippled for the past 2 months after the anti-government movement was signaled to launch the ultimate "demonstration". It has been estimated that economic losses were already in the range of over 70 billion Bahts, and might cost even more.

It has been known that the pro-convicted camp has prepared armed resurrection plan nationwide for years. Unfortunately, the Thai government did not take any action to prevent it in the recent past, or perhaps it lacked sufficient number of cooperating officials and officers to do what is morally right. Many people in the anti-government camp were believed to have been fed with money from some masterminds. Leadership of the protestors have shown that they are willing to risk the lives of women and children they cajoled into their human shields, while preparing fighters armed with M79 grenade launchers and other war weapons, including those captured from soldiers last month. Corrupted people caught last month for manufacturing grenade launchers as well as trying to deliver M79 grenades to their clients were just tips of the icebergs for the social split inside the country at the moment. Yesterday, a car bomb wired in the Southern Thailand style was found. This is a serious warning sign that Southern terrorists are moving in to join the chaos in Bangkok.

There is an additional irony, some prominent persons have called for all sides to cease fire and resume negotiation, knowingly that they do not want peace to actually happen until they get victory.

I try to use Buddhist practice of feeling neutral of what 's happening now, yet I can't help siding with the morally right ones. I have confident that the morally right side will win. I wish peace can be restored soon by soldiers and masterminds for the riots are brought to justice. However, the toll toward Thailand's political stabilization and peace will be sadly high. And political division will remain for years to come.

Everyone has his Karma, and consequences. Everything has its start, it has its end. I now just try to be an observer (in Buddhist sense). This evening, I hope I can still go to attend my evening Abhidhamma class.

Hot sea water in Andaman sea off shore from Ranong

News from Thailand Channel 7 reported an unusual phenomenon called "boiling sea water" off the coast of Ranong reported by fishermen where there were bubbling coming up from the Andaman sea floor and a large number of fish were found dead, some floating on the sea surface while bigger ones submerged to the sea bed.

There was an early speculation that it could be due to subterranean heat coming out from cracks on the sea bed.

Interesting free software for literature tracking by author names

I just discovered this neat free software tool for scientists by chance. It is called myPeers. It allow you to follow publications from scientists or authors you are interested to follow as their papers are indexed by Google Scholar. I suspect that for very up-to-date preprints or very new papers coming out, one might need to check out literature databases directly. However, if you are not too serious about getting the latest papers, then this tool could fulfill the job well.

Buddhist Books (mostly in Thai)

I just thought of the venerable Phra Phromkunaporn (Payut A. Payutto Bhikku), among the most knowledgeable Buddhist monks and scholars, and checked out his website. Surely, there is a list of some 547 of his books. Most of these are available in PDF format as e-books. Good stuff. Link given above.

อ่านเจอจากข่าวว่าวันนี้ เปเปอร์ออกมาในวารสาร Science รายงานเรื่อง จีโนมของคนโบราณ นีแอนเดอทัล

พบว่า ในชาวยุโรปและเอเชีย มีสัดส่วนของจีโนมของ คนนีแอนเดอทัล อยู่ประมาณ 4% แสดงว่า มีการผสมข้ามพันธุ์กันในอดีต คาดว่าคงเกิดขึ้นในช่วง 50,000 ปีที่ผ่านมา เพราะบรรพบุรุษคนรุ่นใหม่ ออกมาจากอัฟริกาในราวๆนั้น

นอกเรื่องนิดหนึ่ง

เคยอ่านเจอจากเว็บเป็นปีแล้ว มีคนเขียนไว้ เสนอว่าบอกว่า คนในปัจจุบัน เป็นผลจากการที่มนุษย์ต่างดาว เอามนุษย์โบราณไปดัดแปลงพันธุกรรม ให้มีความฉลาดเฉลียวมากขึ้น

การอ่านเรื่องจากเว็บ ต้องไม่ไปซีเรียสมาก เพราะมีเรื่องโกหกแยะมาก

อย่างไรก็ดี ผมก็เห็นว่า ในระยะเวลาเพียงไม่กี่หมื่นปี คนปัจจุบันมีวิวัฒนาการเร็วมากจนเหลือเชื่อ หากเปรียบเทียบรหัสดีเอ็นเอของคนกับลิงชิมแปนซีแล้ว ก็คล้ายกันมาก ดูเหมือนจะ 99% ถ้าจำไม่ผิด วิวัฒนาการอย่างรวดเร็วนี้ดูน่าเร็วมากๆจริงๆ ทำให้คนไม่ใช่สัตว์เดรัจฉาน

ผมคิดว่า ความสงสัยเรื่องที่มีคนกล่าวอ้างมานั้น ก็อยุ่ในวิสัยจะเช็คได้เหมือนกัน คือต้องไปไล่ดูจากรหัสจีโนมคนดูสิว่า มีอะไรตรงไหนที่มันบ่งบอกไว้บ้างว่า มีการดัดแปลงพันธุกรรมเอาไว้ได้บ้าง

Online retailing of e-books and digital content to boom even more

e-book is going to be a big business in the next few months onward. I am not sure of Thai people are aware of this, but it has been felt around the World for the past one month immediately after the recent launch of Apple's iPad in the US.

iPad has revolutionized a book and magazine publishing industry from paper-based into online digital media. Google will set up Google Edition in the coming months as a market place to sell e-books. Initial offerning could be in the range of half a million books available. (I suppose mostly in English.) Murdock's News Corp will set up an online store similar to iTune soon. They plan to sell e-books, e-magazines, and likely music, movies, TV programs, too. I think it is a great opportunity for small people to think of setting up small one or two person publication house. People who are not programmers don't need App developing skill in order to get some income from new handheld devices. But I think most people can write, I mean type, and they can produce contents they have expertise in. They have now chance to join this e-content boom.

8 days using a 15" Macbook Pro with Core i7 cpu, 7200 rpm 500 GB hard drive

I have used my brand new Core i7 Apple MBP for 8 days already. I want to say that I have enjoyed it very much and I am glad I did order this machine, not a lower spec machine. It is a very fast machine. According to the spec of the machine, it is the speediest notebook computer available in the market at this time.

With some word processing softwares loaded (NeoOffice and Pages), spreadsheet (Numbers), 3 different Text editor softwares, Activity Monitor, Preview, iCal, Dictionary, the cpu load was < 4% (User + system).

When I watched VDO using Miro software, the cpu load percentage reported by Activity Monitor was in the range of 10-20% at most. With my former 1.67 GHz G4 PowerBook, it used to be around 100%. The image quality of the vdo for the 2.66 GHz i7 cpu and graphic circuitry was much better than my 4.5 yr old G4 PB. (I have to admit I have no tool to monitor which GPU it was using). Never mind, I am just a normal user, not technical reviewer.

CPU load percentage usually hover in the low 10% most of the time. The only time when I noticed that it went into high gear at around 360% cpu load was when I imported several hundreds of pictures from my camera into iPhoto and face recognition started to kick in.

Backing up with Time Machine is also very fast. With a recent back up of over 8 GB of new data to an external hard drive connected via a FireWire 800 cable, it took only a few minutes to finish the job. (It took hours in my older Mac G4 PowerBook notebook. I wished I replaced it a year sooner. But I have wished to wait for the 32 nm cpu anyway.)

For normal use this machine rarely gets warm much. Before the delivery of the machine, I was worrying a bit for the custom ordered i7 cpu for the notebook whether it would turn into a hot toaster or not. Now I am glad that it won't happen.

Battery life in my experience is around 6:30 - 7 hr, never up to 8 hr as advertised, perhaps that is because I always use a USB mouse which always drain the battery. But that is good enought for my use. Now I can have a chance to work long hours elsewhere in many places with full confidence and not to worry about electrical outlets, like in some libraries, or in a campus garden.

Most of the softwares from my former PowerBook Mac under Leopard work with Snow Leopard so far. A notable exception is NeoOffice which I needed to download the Intel cpu version to use, not the PowerPC cpu version as imported from the old machine. There is another software that did not work, let me think. Oh, right, emacs, so I had to download a new version of Aquamacs instead. (But I ended up with TextWrangler and GEdit, and I tend to like these 2 more for now.)

Should one be away from social networking ?

I personally believe that social networking is gaining too much hype recently in Thailand, among teenagers as well as among some circle of academics. I am one who don't trust social networking operators.

Perhaps I have been working with computers for too long, some 27 years. I have been well informed from the start to guard some personal privacy and tried to keep some private data away from the networks. So I don't trust social networking services enough to share my private profile, let alone information. However the main reason for not joining the social network circle is that I don't want to waste my time mingling around with laymen, esp. young non-academic people. I am also definitely eccentric in many ways. Well, I still keep option opened in the future for professional and academic social networking, but for general social networking, I 'll gladly pass. Buddhist monks always recommend that inter-mingling with people too much is not good for us since that will definitely lead to a non-sense chitchat, and that will lead to a lost of "right-consciuosness".

Today someone wrote an article suggesting that people should disengage from some social network, mentioning Facebook in particular. That article confirmed my distrust in social networking. I have put up a link above for people to follow up and see what 's written there and make judgement for themselves.

Get my new MBP today

Few hours ago, 4 days after receiving the e-mail notification of product shipment from Apple Store, I just received my brand new Macbook Pro 15" with Intel i7 cpu, 7200 rpm hard disk, via DHL directly from China. (I got a software CD separately from Singapore warehouse a week ago. Good example of global supply chain.)





The machine is already preinstalled with the OS-X 10.6.3. It took only 2:15 hr to transfer 160 GB of my personal data, setting and softwares, from my old Mac to this one. Look and feel of the desktop and dock are quite the same as my old ones. Even the history of Safari is working fine. However, I noticed that the computer is still indexing the files while I post this blog from the new machine.

อาคารสูงบังสัญญานดาวเทียม เราทำอะไรไม่ได้ละมัง

ข้างบ้านผมกำลังมีการสร้างอาคารสูงกว่า ๓๐ ชั้น ในพื้นที่ที่ไม่ใหญ่มากนั้น การสร้างอาคารสูงขนาดนั้น ทำให้ได้อาคารสูงบางชะลูด ดูน่าเกลียด
มันห่างบ้านผมพอสมควร กะเอาด้วยสายตาก็ไม่น้อยกว่า 50 เมตร เยื้องๆออกไป ถ้ามีแผ่นดินไหวและอาคารนี้พังลงมา บ้านผมคงปลอดภัย (ไม่ได้แช่ง แต่คิดอย่างนี้จริงๆ) ตอนนี้มันก็ไหวบ่อยๆให้เห็นในประเทศใกล้เสียด้วย

ตอนนี้พบว่า อาคารที่กำลังก่อสร้างดังกล่าวเริ่มรบกวนสัญญานโทรทัศน์ดาวเทียมของบ้านผมพอสมควร โชคดีที่ตึกมันไม่บังมิดหมด แต่ก็คงมีบ้านบางหลังที่โดนบังมิด แย่กว่าบ้านผม ผมเลยรู้สึกว่า คนไทยเราไม่ได้มีสิทธิเรื่องพื้นที่ในอากาศเท่าไร ผมไม่รู้ว่า หากใครโดนบังสัญญานดาวเทียมจะไปเรียกร้องอะไรที่ไหนได้ การที่ใครจะมาสร้างอาคารสูงชะลูดใกล้ๆ ทำได้ง่ายเหลือเกิน เมืองไทยไม่มีระบบต้องมีการทำประชาพิจารณ์สาธารณะให้ชุมชนอนุญาตเสียก่อนแบบอเมริกา นักธุรกิจไม่ต้องทำอะไร ออกแบบสอบถามสามสี่หน้าเพื่อสำรวจผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม แต่ตั้งคำถามเข้าตัวให้ได้ประโยชน์ สักแต่ว่าทำไปตามกฎหมายบังคับ ตอนนี้ผมเข้าใจแล้วว่า ในเมืองฝรั่ง ทำไมในหลายๆแห่ง ตึกมันถึงอยู่เป็นกระจุกในใจกลางเมือง ไม่มีกระจายไปทั่วแบบบ้านเรา ของเรามันแทบไม่มีข้อจำกัด ใครจะสร้างตึกตรงไหนก็ได้ และหากว่าพร้อมจะจ่ายเงิน พ่อค้้าก็มักจะง้างกฎได้เสมอ เป็นเรื่องที่น่าสลดใจ

Bangkok situation today

A week past by without much effect to most of foreign tourists visiting Thailand during this political turmoils created by infamous persons who try to "burn down the house". I took my European friends out of town and finally they left Thailand a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, they can't fly back to Europe now due to the volcanic ashes from Iceland and have to hang around in another Asian country for few more days.

However, the situation in Bangkok and several areas in Thailand might develop into further escalation due to sabotages by pro-protester terrorists. Newspapers reported an attack to aviation fuel depot in Pathum Thani by M79 rocket propelled grenades (linked above). Few days ago, there were attempts to blow up high electricity towers which feed high voltage power to Bangkok. These are on top of the firing on both sides during the clash between red-shirts and soldiers on the night of April 10. I would like to see that these terrorists be arrested and bring to justice. They are traitors. I am sure they will be punished later since almost everyone in Bangkok seems to know the identities of this group's masterminds. As to the protestors, I feel sorry for them for being blinded by propaganda and lies for the past one year. I think it 's also partly the present government 's fault when it failed to take action against mouthpieces (radio, TV, magazines) of the previous regime. I suspect that things will turn bloody again when the protest needs to be terminated in the next few days by law enforcement officers to return the situation back to normal.

I have been meditating daily and dissipating Metta (love) to all living creatures for quite some time. Now the attempt should be more frequent.

เรื่องใหม่ก็คือ ข้อมูลต่างๆที่ใครต่อใครเคยไปถ่ายซีร็อกส์ไว้ มันเก็บไว้ในฮาร์ดดิสก์ของเครื่องถ่ายเอกสารสมัยใหม่ทั้งหมด ไม่ได้ลบทิ้งไปไหน ดังนั้น เวลาคนจำนวนมากเอาเอกสารต่างๆไปถ่ายที่ร้าน หากเป็นเอกสารสำคัญ เช่น เอกสารส่วนตัว เอกสารการเงิน หมายเลขบัญชีธนาคาร หมายเลขบัตรเครดิต เอกสารสำคัญทางการค้าของบริษัท หรือ เอกสารลับต่างๆ ในอนาคตเอกสารพวกนั้นมันอาจจะรั่วไปยังคนอื่นได้ รวมทั้ง ผู้ร้าย

ในกรณีเช่น หลังจากมีการเอาเครื่องไปขายเป็นเครื่องมือสอง หรือมีการถอดเอาฮาร์ดดิสก์ไปกู้ข้อมูล ข้อมูลอาจจะตกไปสู่ผู้ประสงค์ร้าย เพราะว่า เครื่องถ่ายเอกสารมันก็เหมือนเครื่องมืออื่นๆ รวมทั้งโทรศัพท์ปัจจุบัน ตรงที่มันก็คือคอมพิวเตอร์นั่นแหละ ในทางปฏิบัตินั้น หากว่า ใครจะขายคอมพิวเตอร์ไป ฝรั่งเขาแนะนำว่าให้ทุบฮาร์ดดิสก์ทิ้งเสีย อย่าขายรวมไป ให้คนซื้อไปซื้อฮาร์ดดิสก์ใหม่ใส่เครื่องเอาเอง (และถึงขายไป มันก็มีอายุใช้งานจำกัดอยู่ดี)

ผมว่า เมืองไทยน่าจะมีกฎหมายบังคับให้ร้านถ่ายเอกสารจัดการทำลายอย่างไรกับแฟ้มเก่าๆในฮาร์ดดิสของเครื่องที่ลูกค้าเคยเอาไปถ่ายเอาไว้นะ
