Dining in Bangkok

Our family took our friends from abroad to an impressive dining experience in Bangkok on board a river cruise along Chaophraya river tonight. The service we used was via Chao Phraya princess dinner cruise (link above). We boarded the boat at River City shopping arcade, near the river end of Si Phraya Road.

The atmosphere was very good, foods were good, music was fun and stimulating. I think the 2 hr experience was worth the price. Recommended. We took a lot of night pictures along the river. Fortunately I have a new digital camera with more sensitive image sensor.

I have been skipping supper for the past 4 months to trim weight so I did not enjoy my meal too much. Nevertheless, the foods were ok. and I want to record the picture of my full plate that night here as well. That plate mainly (plus the scenic and joyful environment) costed 1300 Baht. That 's about 4x - 5x more costly than the cost for a person's diner in a typical Thai food restaurant in town. In a Thai university canteen, however, a bowl of noodle or a plate of rice and other foods cost only 25-30 Baht each. :-)

Just ordered a new notebook today

I took few days off during Songkran to take care of my friends from overseas. I spent those days out of town pondering about the specs of notebook I was going to order. I am glad I did have ample time to ponder about it and then I also had more time to read what people were talking about the new machines in the past few days.

Eventually, I ordered an i7 cpu 15" Macbook Pro from Apple, with 7200 rpm (500 GB) hard drive, and a DVI adaptor (for my old 20" Cinema display). It is going to be the fastest notebook currently available on the market. But I did not order the higher resolution screen since I don't want to stress my aging eyes too much. I also ordered an iWork 09, realizing well that in the next few months I might need to upgrade to iWork '10 if it comes out, which I think it will.


I will have to wait for a week to get the machine with that 7200 rpm hard drive option. And by that time my daughter will be very happy too since she will get my current 15" G4 Powerbook to be used in conjunction with her iPod Touch.

เหตุการณ์บ้านเมือง

ผมรู้สึกไม่อยากตามข่าวบ้านเมืองอีกในช่วงนี้ รู้สึกหดหู่ ไม่อยากให้จิตเศร้าหมอง ต้องเข้าสมาธิบ่อยมากกว่าปกติ วางจิตให้เป็นอุเบกขา สุดท้ายก็แผ่เมตตาไปให้สรรพสัตว์

การต่อสู้ระหว่างธรรมะและอธรรมคงจะมีต่อไป สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นมีสาเหตุ แต่ในที่สุดมันก็จะดับไป มีวันสิ้นสุด ผมหวังว่า เมื่อเหตุการณ์ที่ไม่ดีสิ้นสุดลง บ้านเมืองจะได้รับสิ่งที่ดีๆ นั่นคือฝ่ายใดที่เป็นธรรมเป็นฝ่ายชนะ

ฤา แม็คบุ๊คโปร กำลังจะออกมาในหนึ่งหรือสองสัปดาห์ข้างหน้านี้

ผมรอมาหลายเดือนแล้ว และตอนนี้ ก็เลยกำหนดเปลี่ยนรุ่นของ แม็คบุ๊คโปร แล็พท็อป มาแล้ว ๒ เดือน (หรือใครจะเรียก โน๊ตบุ้ค ก็แล้วแต่ ได้ทั้งสองอย่าง)
ตอนนี้ ข่าวบอกว่า inventory ของเครื่องในร้านค้าออนไลน์หลายแห่งไม่มีของแล้วสำหรับรุ่นที่ออกมาเมื่อ ๙ เดือนก่อน ในสองสามประเทศ เลยคาดว่ากำลังจะออกรุ่นใหม่มา (เว้นในประเทศไทย ยังมีของอยู่) อาทิตย์หน้าสงกรานต์ เผลอๆถ้าออกมา กว่าจะมาเมืองไทยก็คงสิ้นเดือนเมษายน

เห็นตัณหา ความอยากได้ มีเกิดขึ้นมา มากแล้วก็เบาลง มีแล้วก็หายไป(ชั่วคราว) เป็น สังขาร ที่ควบคุมไม่ได้

มีข่าวเพิ่มเติมว่า ฐานข้อมูลของ ร้านค้าออนไลน์บางแห่งในสหรัฐฯ มีรายการสินค้าเป็นคอมพิวเตอร์ตัวใหม่จากแอปเปิ้ลเข้ามา สี่รุ่น พร้อมกับ พาร์ทนัมเบอร์ ที่เป็นของจริง และราคาก็เท่าๆกับราคาของโน้ตบุ้คของแม็ค ดังน้ัน ความเชื่อที่ว่ากำลังจะออกมาในสองสามวันนี้ (คาดว่าวันอังคาร) หรือสัปดาห์หน้า เริ่มใกล้ความเป็นจริงมากขึ้น

This is my blog and I think I can say whatever I want to say. Right ? Of course, what I am saying will be within the limit of the laws. Normally it is an oriental courtesy to welcome people to your house. But I am more realistic: there are some people that you are not pleased with. So even if they come to your home for a business, and we have to receive them for some logical reasons, but we don't have to pretend that we do love them so much. Right ? Certainly, we will not be rude to them either. So here it is, in straight face, no animosity, just informative statement :-

Mr. Hunsen, we are not pleased for your coming to Thailand.

วีดิโอข้างบน เป็นการบรรยายของ Nicholas Negroponte เกี่ยวกับโครงการของเขาคือ โครงการ หนึ่งแล็พท็อปต่อเด็กหนึ่งคน (One Laptop Per Child project, OLPC) เขาบรรยายได้ดีมาก

ผมคิดว่าน่าดูมาก น่าสนใจว่า ในบางประเทศ เด็กที่ได้แล็พท็อปไป เขากลับไปสอนพ่อแม่ปู่ย่าตายายให้อ่านหนังสือได้ ที่บ้าน
และอีกเรื่องหนึ่ง นีโกรพอนเต เล่าเป็นตัวอย่างว่า เขาส่งเครื่องแล็พท็อป ๑๐๐ เครื่องไปให้เด็กในแต่ละโรงเรียน ในอัฟริกา แต่ละเครื่องมีหนังสือ ๑๐๐ เล่มที่ต่างกัน ทำให้ในโรงเรียนนั้น มีหนังสือให้เด็กอ่านได้ถึง ๑๐๐๐๐ เล่ม
และก็ตอนนี้ ที่ อุรุไกว เด็กทุกคนในประเทศนั้นมีแล็พท็อปคนละหนึ่งเครื่อง เป็นเพราะวิสัยทัศน์ของประธานาธิบดีของเขา

เมืืองไทยโครงการทำนองนี้คงไม่เกิดง่ายๆ เพราะนักการเมืองส่วนมากจะไม่ได้สตางค์ หรือไม่ก็ถ้าฉันไม่ได้หน้าตา ฉันก็จะไม่ทำ
ผมรู้สึกเศร้าใจเพราะคิดไปไกลว่า นักการเมืองในเมืองไทยในเมืองไทยส่วนใหญ่มัวแต่สนใจแต่เรื่องผลประโยชน์ของตัวเป็นหลัก เรื่องว่าทำอย่างไรกลุ่มหรือครอบครัวของตัวจะรวยมากขึ้น ทำไงจะได้รับเลือกตั้งเพื่อได้เงินต่อไปในสมัยหน้า เรื่องส่วนรวมของบ้านเมืองไม่ค่อยคิดถึง คิดแต่จะหาทางชนะคู่ต่อสู้ทางการเมือง

A friend sent me a link to this VDO, linked above.

Stephen Batchelor: Confession of a Buddhist Atheist.

It 's a record of his 1 hr talk promoting his new book in the US. Essentially the book is an autobiography of his life, a British who after his troubling years as a teenager decided to be a Buddhist and went to India, becoming a Tibetan monk for 7 years, and then a Korean Zen monk for 4 years, and later after going back to UK, started practicing Vipassana (in the line of the venerable Goenka's Vedhana monitoring).

Intriguing life indeed. I am more interested in some bits and pieces in his views, one is that he proposed that Buddha must have studied in Tuxila when he was just a young prince (but the Tripitaka did not give information about this.). I think it 's possible. There are other interesting remarks.

I also like his answering to questions at the end.

ผมเพิ่งซื้อ ไอพ็อดทัช ให้ลูกเมื่อสองวันก่อน ความจริงมันออกมาตั้งนานแล้ว จนในอเมริกากำลังออก ไอแพ็ดมาในวันสองวันนี้แล้ว แต่ในอดีตก็ลังเลกลัวว่าจะทำให้การเรียนเขาเสีย และก็เขาก็อยากได้มาเป็นปีๆ เมื่อมีสาเหตุที่สมควร และเขาผ่านช่วงที่ต้องเครียดกับการสอบเข้า ม. ๔ มามาก และอยากได้มานานพอ การให้ตอนนี้คงไม่ทำให้เกิดผลเสีย ตอนนี้ก็คงถึงเวลาที่เขาจะได้เอ็นจอยกับสื่อใหม่เสียที

ผมอ่านแล้วคิดว่าดีมากๆ ตอนนี้ยังอ่านไม่จบ แต่ก็เอามาประยุกต์ใช้กับตัวได้แล้ว คิดว่าจะแก้มุมมองที่ยังไม่ค่อยถูกต้องของตัวเองบางอย่างได้

Current scenario

I went out to a barber today. They tuned their TV onto a Red-shirt centric channel. Here is my opinions a few hours later.

Most people nowadays live in their self-created illusions. People chose to believe based on their own benefits and profitability, rather that what is morally right or wrong for the society. They even tried to convince themselves with advertisements and propaganda.

This is true for commercials where people, esp. teenagers, were fed to their eyes and ears daily with attractive advertisements, at times with unwise or non-utilitarian values, only to draw money as much as possible from their pockets.

What is said above is also true for political scenario. People were fed with falsified information all day long for months by some biased TV and radio stations, which perhaps operated from money given by corrupted and convicted politicians, and the government did not try enough to rectify things. People were also given biased opinions from "invited experts" on TV, who sometimes incited hatred among people of different opinions. Astonishingly, a number of people seems to enjoy watching the brainwashing by some media. Some people enjoy getting paid for their joining of political rallies: that 's why some of them took sides. Since many people are paid by money from dubious sources, I wonder where their dignity are and what is their moral value. They might be financially poor, but they don't need to be poor on their esteem. Perhaps this is the outcome of our faulty education, and our faulty money-based democratic system, not a virtue-based system. This is what I saw these days in the country.

Protestors said they want democracy whereas it is already right there but they choose not to see it. Weren't it for existing democracy many people would not be able to come out to protest in the past few years. Now that many poople who are abusing their excessive liberty by stepping over the liberty of other people, I am afraid that there might be one day that liberty in our society might be taken away for the sake of a more social stability. This is karma, "the intentions" of people of various factions, that would bear results, bad or worse, whether they consciously know it or not.

Let's see how the situation develops in the next few months. I 'll just observe it as a nonpartisan, although my mind took side with morally-right people.

คนกับการสูญพันธุ์ของสัตว์ต่างๆ

ข่าวบอกว่า ประเทศต่างๆตกลงกันไม่ได้ว่าจะให้มีการห้ามล่าปลาทูน่าครีบน้ำเงิน (Bluefin tuna) ซึ่งเป็นสัตว์ที่คนในญี่ปุ่นถือว่าเป็นอาหารอันโอชะ คือ ใช้ทำ ปลาดิบ (sushi) ก็เลยมีการล๊อบบี้กันอย่างหนัก หลายประเทศในยุโรปที่มีกองเรือจับปลาขนาดใหญ่ก็มีเอี่ยวด้วย ก็เลยยังไม่มีการห้ามล่า อย่างน้อยก็ปีนี้ สัตว์ชนิดนี้ใกล้สูญพันธุ์เต็มทีแล้ว ตัวหนึ่ง ราคาหลายแสนยูโรทีเดียว

เป็นที่น่าสังเกตว่า คนเป็นตัวทำให้สัตว์ต่างๆสูญพันธุ์ และทั้งนี้ เป็นเรื่องของผลประโยชน์ของคนล้วนๆเลย เพราะคนจำนวนมากหาประโยชน์จากชีวิตของสัตว์ กองเรือประมงต่างๆจะจับปลาให้ได้มากที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ เพื่อให้ได้รายได้สูงสุด (คนจับจะได้เอาเงินไปซื้อของบำเรอกิเลสต่างๆ) ไม่ได้คำนึงเรื่องการจับเพื่อให้ได้เพียงพอเลี้ยงชีพเท่านั้น

ผมไม่ได้ชอบกินปลาดิบ บางคนอาจจะชอบ

Start of unusual days in Bangkok

On Friday, March 12, 2010, about 2/3 or 3/4 of the cars are gone from most streets of Bangkok. In many offices, some workers took leave. It 's also the start of schools' summer vacation so the school and university students are away from campuses. On Friday night, in the inner Bangkok, police started to man several sites that had been protest sites in the past political activities of the city.

By Saturday morning, perhaps 90% of the cars are gone from many streets. Outside the fence of the prime minister office, several hundred meters of concrete barriers were put down. Some platforms which looked like those for rock concerts were darlingly set up by advanced teams of the protestors at key intersections in the inner Bangkok's main boulevards. They also had set up their toilet tents a day in advance. I felt amazed at excessive (so-called) democratic expressions that some group of brainwashed and paid Thais have inflicted on a large number of Thais. This is a bad karma, after all, karma is the intention (by Buddhist definition). I have a feeling today is the start of multi-week long rally. Normal life of many people in the city are disrupted. Funerals cancelled. Many shops closed. Bank branches in some areas are closed. Some roads and bridges closed. Many schools postponed their entrant exam schedules.

My family went ahead with a scheduled cremation of an elder relative today at a temple near the planned protest site. Only close relatives and few close friends dared to come. That was good enough since I expected nobody else except our family to come. Some anti-riot police and red shirt villagers appeared nearby and inside the temple that we had ceremony. After we were done with our business, we drove straight back home. Before sunset, I meditated and made good wishes to all, people and animals, hoping that will help creating positive feeling into hearts of the people and the Gaia.

พอเห็นนามปากกาปั๊บก็หยิบมาเลย เพราะเป็นของท่านผู้เคยเป็นอาจารย์ของผมมาเมื่อสามสิบปีก่อน สมัยเรียนอยู่จุฬา ท่านคือ อุบาสิกา ดร.ไพเราะ ทิพย์ทัศน์

เมื่อซื้อมาอ่านแล้วไม่ผิดหวัง สำนวนอาจารย์อ่านแล้ว มีความรู้สึกเหมือนกับว่าอ่านหนังสือปรัชญาของพุทธศาสนามากกว่า แต่ผมเข้าใจดีว่าท่านต้องการเขียนหนังสือเพื่ออธิบายธรรมะ งานเขียนของท่านเหมาะกับคนอ่านที่ชอบหนังสือซีเรียสนิดๆ อธิบายเป็นเรื่องเป็นราว หนังสือของท่านจะไม่ใช่หนังสือธรรมะอ่านแบบเบาๆ สบายๆ แบบอ่านแล้วมีความสุข จะไม่ใช่อย่างนั้น สไตล์การเขียนของท่านเป็นยังงี้มาสามสิบปีแล้ว

ถึงตอนนี้ผมยังอ่านเล่มนี้ไม่จบ ได้แต่เพียงอ่านเป็นส่วนๆไป แต่ก็เท่าที่ผ่านมาตอนนี้ก็เอ็นจอยมาก ตรงจริตกับผม ผมอ่านแล้วภาพของอาจารย์พร้อมรอยยิ้มสมัยเมื่อสามสิบปีก่อนก็ปรากฎขึ้นในใจ หวังว่าวันหนึ่งคงได้เจอและได้ไปกราบอาจารย์อีกครั้งหนึ่ง
