From the news

I just don't want to raise issue about "political news". Now I found other news (equally depressing) that I think I can give my two cents.

From the linked news (in Thai language), the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), aka Thailand's FBI, is about to take action against a Thai subsidiary of a well known foreign company which imported tobacco from the US for alleged under-declarations of import tobacco prices. The news said that the falsified prices for 3 years have caused the kingdom a lost revenue of some 60 billion Bahts.

My comment is that, since the company under investigation has only a registered capital of 100,000 Baht (yes, that 's not a typo) if the Thai government will try to claim 60 billions Bahts in back duty plus interest from that company, how would that be possible. I think the Thai government agency would not dare to take legal against the giant foreign company. However, the thai subsidiary company could be sued, and if it lost, its shareholders would simply go bankrupt and the MOF will get nothing. Ta da ! Sad story, or perhaps stupid story, no, just plain greedy story. Possibly, there might be even more stinky missing information here as well, such as possible collaborators who work in some state agency.

ผมพยายามนึกถึงเรื่องการทำบุญนี้ และการทำบุญอื่นๆในอดีตบ่อยๆ เพื่อให้เป็นอาจิณณกรรม (คำนี้ผมสะกดไม่ผิดหรอก เพราะผมสะกดคำแบบบาลี ผมไม่ได้สะกดแบบราชบัณฑิตสถานกำหนด)

คนที่มาอ่านเจอเรื่องนี้ หากรู้สึกยินดีด้วย ก็จะได้บุญนี้เช่นกัน เป็น ปัตตานุโมทนามัย คือ บุญที่ได้จากการอนุโมทนา แต่จะดียิ่งขึ้น ถ้าผู้อ่านมีศรัทธาร่วมบริจาค โดยการโอนเงินไปร่วมบุญด้วย

Computation clusters in Thailand

In the past few years, I noticed that many organization in Thailand have started to set up computational clusters. A latest one is a second cluster of BIOTEC, comprising of 22 computational nodes (704 cpu cores). Its OS is Rock cluster 5.1 (based on RedHat Linux Enterprise) and job schedular is Sun Grid Engine. A number of bioinformatics softwares have been installed.

รู้สึกว่าชาวยุโรปเขาคิดถูก เมื่อหันมาดูประเทศไทยแล้วก็ท้อใจ ผมมีความรู้สึกว่า คนบริหารประเทศนี้ในระดับสูงส่วนมาก ถ้าไม่ใช่เป็นพวกไม่รู้อะไรเลยกับเรื่องประเด็นสำคัญในโลกนี้ (เรื่องซอฟต์แวร์โอเพ่นซอร์สก็เป็นเรื่องหนึ่ง) ก็เป็นพวกมีเรื่องผลประโยชน์ส่วนตัว คืออะไรที่ควรทำเขาไม่ทำ เป็นเพราะสองเรื่องนี้เป็นส่วนมาก

e-Books in Thai

Currently, e-books are in the trend nows. There are news in the Internet about Kindle 2 and iPhone app for reading e-books. For English speaking people, they probably have many hundred thousands of books to download (public domain) or to buy online. For Thai, I did not know where to get a collection of Thai e-books, until I found links from Thai language wikipedia. It provides two links but only one is working now (given above). I 've bookmarked and I 'll check back to them again. All the Thai books from TU library are old copyright-expired, according to Thai law, which gave 50 years copyright to book authors. I 'd like to commend the people at Thammasat University library for this great service. Good jobs. I have not checked if libraries of my two alma maters have this kind of service or not. It 'd be great too if they do.

Machine translation with Thai among 41 languages now offered by Google

Google just added a Thai language machine translation among 41 languages, according to a recent google blog.
Now I think Thai people have to be more careful about what they posted. Anything, even a private blog in Thai could be understood by most earthlings. The blog article is linked above.

Here is the location of the Thai translation web. I have not tried for the quality. (I am curious if it would work with classical or ancient Thai, or a Buddhist dhamma article in which even layman Thai can not even understand. I will test later.)

I tested.
Just for fun though:-
I tested a Pali phrase in Thai alphabets and the translation went crazy.

Also, after testing a paragraph from a Thai news article, the translation would not work properly due to the truncated language style or headline style of the language, not to mention the slangs used in a news article.
