บทส่งท้าย epilogue

ผมอยากจะบวชมาหลายปีแล้ว ภรรยาก็สนับสนุนมาหลายปี แต่ผมก็ลังเลๆ ถึงราวปี ๒๕๕๒ ศีล ๕ ผมก็บริบูรณ์

จนมาปีที่แล้ว ๒๕๕๓ ก็เริ่มเข้าฌาน ๔ ได้ จิตก็เริ่มพัฒนามากขึ้น วิปัสสนาคล่องขึ้น สมถะก็ดีขึ้น

จนจิตใจเป็นพระเข้าไปทุกทีๆ

ความรู้สึกก่อนบวช เมื่อปีที่แล้ว คิดว่า บวชก็ได้ ไม่บวชก็ได้ เพราะว่าก้าวหน้ามาถึงขั้นที่ปลอดภัยแล้ว เคยเห็นนิพพานมาแล้ว ประจักษ์แล้วว่ามรรคผลนิพพานมีจริง ต่อมาอีกหลายเดือนก็คิดว่า

อยู่เป็นฆราวาสกระทบอารมณ์กับคนอื่นมากเกินไป และเบื่อกิเลสตัวเอง

ที่เห็นๆ ก็อยากจะหักดิบมัน เราจะไปขั้นก้าวหน้ากว่านั้น จะตัดกามราคะและปฏิฆะ ตัดการปรุงแต่งของวิถีจิตจากปัญจทวาร หรือทวาร ๕ ก็ต้องเข้าป่า ไม่มีทางอื่น

แต่ก็ยังลังเล สุดท้าย ต่อมาผมได้ขึ้นเขาไปยังที่แห่งหนึ่ง ไปกราบนมัสการพระอาจารย์รูปหนึ่ง ซึ่งเป็นผู้ทรงฌาน ผมหารือท่านว่า อยากจะบวช กราบเรียนท่านว่า ผมถึงขนาดไปสอบถามหลวงพ่อองค์หนึ่งจะขอให้ท่านเป็นอุปัชฌาย์แล้ว แต่ตอนนั้นยังไม่ได้กำหนดวัน แต่ในใจบางครั้งก็ยังคิดว่าไม่สมควรทิ้งครอบครัวไป

ท่านอาจารย์ก็บอกว่า ถ้าเราคิดอย่างนั้น

ก็เท่ากับตำหนิพระพุทธเจ้าที่ทรงทิ้งครอบครัวไปบวชด้วยละสิ

และ ก็ต้องตำหนิองค์ท่านด้วย เพราะว่า ก่อนหน้าท่านจะบวชนั้น

ท่านเคยเป็นนักธุรกิจในกรุงเทพ เคยแต่งงานมาแล้ว ท่านยังตัดสินใจ สละทรัพย์สมบัติออกบวช

หลังจากคุยกับท่าน ผมก็เลยตัดสินใจว่าผมจะบวชแน่นอน ๑๐๐ เปอร์เซ็นต์ ไม่ถอยหลังอีก

ผมคิดว่า ผมออกบวช ผมน่าจะสงเคราะห์ทางธรรมให้กับสมาชิกในครอบครัวได้มากกว่า

การจะช่วยคนอื่น เสมือนหนึ่งก่อนจะไปช่วยคนอื่นที่ตกน้ำ

เราต้องฝึกว่ายน้ำให้เป็น ฝึกว่ายให้แข็ง เสียก่อน การออกบวชก็เป็นแบบนั้น

ในขณะเดียวกัน ครอบครัวก็น่าจะอยู่ได้ในเมือง โดยที่ไม่มีผม ทั้งทางการเงิน

และเรื่องอื่นๆ

เมื่อตัดสินใจแล้ว บางวันผมก็เริ่งร่า รู้สึกฮึกเหิม เสมือนหนึ่งทหารที่กำลังจะออกสู่สมรภูมิ ดีใจที่จะไปเป็นนักรบของพระพุทธเจ้า ออกรบกันกิเลสของตัวเอง จะถือเอาผ้ากาสาวะเพื่อมุ่งสู่พระนิพพาน จะปฏิบัติธรรมด้วยการอุทิศชีวิตเต็มที่ต่อไป แต่ก็มีบางวันอยู่บ้างที่ใจกังวลเล็กน้อย เป็นห่วงครอบครัว แต่ตัดสินใจแล้วก็ต้องลองดู ยังไงก็ต้องออกศึกษาธรรมในป่าสักพักหนึ่ง จะอยู่บ้านอีกไม่ได้ มีสถานการณ์รัดตัวหลายอย่าง รู้ตัวว่า ชีวิตเป็นของน้อย เวลาเหลือน้อย ต้องรีบดำเนินการ

อีกไม่กี่วัน เมื่อผมแปลงเพศเป็นนักบวชแล้ว ต่อไปก็คงไม่ได้มาเขียนบล๊อกนี้อีก และอีกไม่นานนัก สังคมโลก ชีวิตของคนและสัตว์ และพืช ก็คงเปลี่ยนไปเป็นอย่างมาก ทุกอย่างมีเกิดมีดับ เป็นธรรมดา ทุกคนในโลกนี้ เกิดมามีชีวิตอยู่ไม่นานก็ต้องสุดสิ้นไป เป็นธรรมดา ผมจะไม่อาวรณ์เรื่องในอดีตอีก การงานอะไรที่คาราคาซังไว้ก็จะตัดไปหมด ตั้งเป้าว่า เมื่อชีวิตนี้ของตนสิ้นสุดลง ก็คงจบชีวิตในมิตินี้เพียงเท่านี้

ผมเห็นความเกิดมาแล้วก็ความดับไป รู้สึกสลดใจ

อีก ๗ วันต่อไป ก็ถึงคราวคนอื่นบ้าง สิ้นสุดฉากหนึ่งในชีวิตเฉกเช่นเดียวกัน แต่ในฐานะเพียงแค่คนตัวเล็กๆคนหนึ่ง

The temple where Buddha's picture was taken 26 centuries ago

Yesterday, I visited "Wat Phutthachai" วัดพระพุทธฉาย , which means "the temple of the Buddha's radiated picture", in Saraburi province. According to local legend and my vague memory, Lord Buddha visited this small mountain 26 centuries ago, then local people asked Lord Buddha how could people in future generations be able to see him again. So Lord Buddha was kind enough to magically created his image on the side of the mountain as a long lasting gift. This area was rediscovered in the Ayutthaya period, after monks who came back from Ceylon or Serendip (presently Sri Lanka) told a King that there was a story they heard from Ceylon about such place in the Thai kingdom so a kingdom-wide search was conducted which led to its discovery.
The image was worshipped by many Kings and Royalties in the past. It is a nice place and easier to visit, esp. now that an eastern by-pass highway was built. I drove by it several times, until I decided I had to stop to visit it this time.

ผมเพิ่งไปเยี่ยมโครงการสร้าง มหาวิทยาลัยสงฆ์ จังหวัดชัยภูมิมา เพราะปีที่แล้ว ผมและคณะได้บริจาคเงินไปบางส่วน คราวนี้ได้ไปกราบนมัสการ พระราชภาวนาวราจารย์ รองเจ้าคณะจังหวัดชัยภูมิ ท่านมาดูแลการก่อสร้างและรอรับญาติโยมอยู่เกือบทุกวัน ในแต่ละวันท่านต้องเดินทางไปกลับจากวัดของท่านวันละ ๑๘๐ ก.ม. ไปกลับ ปราสาทดิน กลางวันที่แดดจ้าและมีความร้อนระอุจากไอแดด ท่านก็นั่งร้อนๆ อยู่ในศาลาเงียบๆ รอต้อนรับพุทธศาสนิกชนผู้มาทำบุญ ผมรู้สึกสงสารท่าน ท่านอายุมากแล้ว แต่ก็ไม่ได้พักในป่าเย็นสบาย ด้วยเมตตาสูงยิ่ง ทำอุทิศตัวท่านทำกิจที่ได้รับการอาราธนามาเพื่อส่วนรวมของสงฆ์

ผมถ่ายภาพมาหลายภาพ เห็นสร้างอยู่ ๒ อาคาร อาคารใหญ่เป็นอาคารเรียนและชั้นบนเป็นที่พัก อีกอาคารเล็กกว่า ผมเข้าใจว่าเป็นห้องสมุดและห้องพักเหมือนกัน ดูเหมือนว่าในโครงการจะมีทั้งหมด ๓ อาคาร ยังขาดเงินอีกมาก แต่พระท่านก็คงทำไปเรื่อยๆ ได้ฟังมาว่าพระท่านดำเนินการสั่งซื้อวัสดุก่อสร้างเอง (ซึ่งก็เป็นเรื่องปกติของการสร้างวัดและศาสนสถานในบ้านเรา) ดังนั้น เชื่อว่าจะได้วัสดุก่อสร้างในราคาประหยัด คุ้มเงินบริจาค ใครผ่านไปชัยภูมิ ออกนอกเมืองไปสัก ๕ ก.ม. เลยสี่แยกด้านเหนือที่จะมุ่งไปทาง อช. ภูแลนคา เพียง ๑ ก.ม. กว่าๆ ก็ถึงโครงการ สามารถแวะไปบริจาคเงินทำบุญได้ ที่ศาลาเล็กๆ ด้านหลัง

วัดปราสาทดิน ในหน้าฝน

รอบๆ ปราสาทดิน อ. ภักดีชุมพล จ. ชัยภูมิ เป็นที่ปลูกป่าหลายร้อยไร่ มานานกว่าสิบปี หน้าฝน ป่าเขียวขจี ถนนเส้นสั้นๆบางส่วนที่ไม่มีรถวิ่ง มีมอสขึ้นเต็ม ตามพื้นป่ามีเห็ดนานาพันธุ์ขึ้นทั่วไป แม่ชีจะเดินไปเก็บเห็ดในแต่ละวันได้มาทำแกงได้เป็นหม้อใหญ่ เพื่อไปปรุงเป็นกับข้าวถวายพระ อุบาสิกาและโยมผู้ปฏิบัติธรรมในเช้าวันรุ่งขึ้น

อยากจะแอบบันทึกไว้ในบล๊อกส่วนตัวนี้ว่า ตัวผมเองได้เอาต้นไม้จำนวนหนึ่งติดรถไปปลูกไว้ด้วย เมื่อสองวันก่อน มีทั้งไม้ผล สมุนไพร กล้วยน้ำว้าพันธุ์ดี ที่ได้มาจาก ม.ก. กำแพงแสน (เผื่อชาววัดเอาไว้รับประทาน สำหรับกล้วยคิดว่า ไม่กี่เดือนก็คงได้รับประทานแล้ว)

ผมได้อ่านหนังสือชื่อ นิพพานชาตินี้กันเถอะ ที่มีผู้ปราถนาดีนำมาแจกให้ เป็นหนังสือเล่มเล็กๆ ปกอ่อนสีเหลือง

ผมอ่านแล้ว ขอวิเคราะห์ว่า

ผู้เขียนนำแนวคิดทางศาสนาอื่นแทรกเข้ามา ดูจะมีเจตนาเอาคำสอนภายนอก มาปนในคำสอนพุทธศาสนา ส่วนที่เหลือบางส่วน อ่านเผินๆก็เห็นได้ว่าไปแปลงคำสอนของของครูบาอาจารย์ มาใช้

โดยเขาก็ใช้คำและสำนวนเลียนแบบเท่านั้น หนังสือเล่มนี้ผมเห็นว่า

ถ้าคนทั่วไปที่ไม่ได้ศึกษาปริยัติมาบ้าง เมื่อมาอ่านแล้ว จะเข้าใจเรื่องคำสอนทางพุทธศาสนาไปผิดๆได้ กล่าวถึง นิพพานปนกับสวรรค์ พูดกำกวมประหนึ่งว่าเป็นสิ่งเดียวกัน เป็นคำสอนของฝรั่งไป

ผมไม่แนะนำให้อ่านเล่มนี้ และถ้าใครมีไว้ ก็ไม่แนะนำให้แจกคนอื่นอ่านต่อไป จะเป็นผลเสีย ส่วนจะไปจัดการอย่างไรก็สุดแล้วแต่เห็นสมควร

Thai Cambodian border at Khao Praviharn

Look at the map of the border area between Thailand and Cambodia at Khao Praviharn area. From the contour map it can be seen where the border is, or was. Around 1962 (I recall from memory, did not look up), Thailand lost the case againt Cambodia in World court against all odds and was sentenced to surrender the tip of the Khao Praviharn, against the common sense of most laymen, any nationality. I heard that Thailand's position is that she never accept that sentence in full, pending new evidence in the future that can be used to resurrect the case again.

Now, with initiatives of Cambodia, the World court is asking both Thailand and Cambodia to withdraw troop from wider areas. I personally don't believe Cambodia would withdraw their soldiers from the peak. Nor do they plan to withdraw their civilians from the area. I think we are aware of ancient tale about a gentle horse that was squeezed out of its shelter by another hostile horse. Cambodia under the present leadership has been trying to squeeze in their soldiers (without uniforms) and their families to occupy that area, and has been aiming to expand the beach head and thus escalate the situation.

Personally I don't like to see any fighting to erupt since fighting will waste lives of good people from both sides. Soldiers and villagers from that area in both countries are mostly hereditary related and why do they have to kill each other due to a land dispute instigated by certain politician(s). (I don't want to name names, it's against my blogging principle.) We all don't have much time left for our lives. Looking back over multiple centuries of history and anyone can see that border lines usually shifted after some time, even some new countries arose along the way. Usually, it is the politicians who tried to exploit and gain benefits from situation, e.g. to improve their domestic political position while small people are casualties for their actions.

I think Thailand has been cheated of its legitimate border by the World court due to her trust in Western legal system, blindly ignored the omnipresent back-end dealings among powerful western countries, which she should not have. She had a militarily upper hand during the conflict in the 60s. People of both countries would be at perfect peace and better off now had the area was still under Thailand's jurisdiction. And now, 50 years later, some politicians in foreign countries have tried to exploit her situation further. When I drove to that area last year, I sadly could not enter the National park area in my own country their due to occupation by foreign troops. I could not admire its natural beauty in that area, let alone the civilization relics there. I think previous Thailand governments up to the Abhisit government have to accept the responsibility on their past inaction on this issue for decades.

I am about to become a Buddhist monk in the future, so that the way I look at it, and I think that is from a neutral point of view.

P.S. I can't help but recalling well the ending of the tale of the horses. We 'll see.

To cure a procrastination habit ?

I just realized that there is a term to describe a personality that I might belong. From a website I found articles written by a Philosophy Professor (I suppose), there is a habit he called "Structured Procrastination". Good reading article, even from the front page. But the linked page is also good. I just realized I must have inherited my mom's Perfectionist trait. Oh, Boy, and I though I was sloppy and unorganized. In a mess, or chaos, there must be hidden ordered structure, I guess. Aha !

Learning curve for Thai about politics

At this time of writing this post, I will go to cast a vote in the next few hours for a general election in Thailand. I am not excited about it. I expect a worse political situation after this election day. I expect any wining party to face protest from opposing people. I think a lot of people in Thailand are still in their learning process of democracy. Any adverse condition will be another lesson in a steep learning curve on politics for people in Thai society to learn.

I am not particularly fond of western style democracy in Thailand now. The system has been abused severely by corrupt politicians. I think a better democracy that suit Thai culture better is to integrate many Buddhist peaceful and wisdom-based doctrines into Thai politics. For example, if Thai politicians are forced to obey the 5 precept strictly or they would face impeachment, then Thailand would be free of corruption and people would be much happier.

Financial ponder

If someone spent 100 Baht a day for his daily meals and other expenses, but had a daily income of 58 Baht, what would he do ? He would borrow money of 42 Baht each day from somewhere. Right ?
For a typical person, I feel that any lenders would have no realistic time frame as to when they 'd get their money back. They 'd only get daily interests, hopefully paid on time each day. Now what if there is a chance that he might have a problem paying his daily due ?

Now the exemplified case is not a person, but a big government, I can feel the impacts on the World's economy. I am talking about debt of a big country, not debt of a small "developing" country like "Sarakhant".

And the impact on higher oil price is getting to higher food prices, looks like in many countries. Soon there will be chaos everywhere.

ก็ปรากฎว่าไปได้หนังสือมาหลายเล่ม จากสำนักพิมพ์เช่น มูลนิธิโกมลคีมทอง สำนักพิม์คบไฟ สำนักพิมพ์สวนเงินมีมา สำนักพิมพ์เกษตรกรรมธรรมชาติเป็นต้น
หนังสือที่ซื้อ ถ้าไม่ใช่แนวปรัชญา ก็มักเป็น แนวพุทธในทัศนะชาวตะวันตก นอกนั้นก็เป็นเรื่องเกษตร

I have been to Northern Laos by car recently and it has a serene atmosphere which I enjoyed. So after I heard the news about the high speed railway project from China to Lao, and then to continue to Bangkok in the next few years, I was interested in how the model would fit into the rugged mountainous area of Northern Laos.

I have a nagging feeling that there might be an uncertainty on the construction of the high speed train in Thailand. Thai politicians in the past have shown their capability of delay things. Prime example is Suvarnabhumi airport, which was eventually built some 40 years after its land redemption law was passed.

I think, on one aspect, this is a positive sign for improved regional communication and trade between Southeast Asia and south China after 2016. On the other hand, however, I can't avoid worry about adversed impacts on small Thai agricultural farms and Thai small industries. I think they will be struggling with the flood of lower cost products from China that will come with the train. And Thailand will surely experience more trade deficits with China.

Solar power electricity generation in Thailand

Thailand has opened its first solar electricity generating farm, currently the largest in Asean countries. The "Solar Farm Korat 1", located in Tambon Don Chompoo, Amphor Nonsoong, Nakhon Ratchasima Province in northeast Thailand has around 30,000 solar panels installed in an area of more than 100 Rais (>40 acres). Solar Power Co., Ltd, has invested over 700 million Baht for this farm. It plans to invest up to 2.4 billion Bahts for a total of 34 solar farms in 9 provinces in the noreast by the year B.E. 2556 (2013). For this particular farm, it has a capacity of 6 Megawatts, and is expected to generate income around 430,000 Baht per day by feeding electricity into the provincial grid of the Electrical Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). The feeding has been started since April B.E. 2553 (2010). Additional farms are in Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Panom and have been started generating electricity last month and this month as well.

ในวันเพ็ญเดือนวิสาข เจ้าชายสิทธัตถะ ทรงนั่งขัดสมาธิเพชร บนหญ้ากุสสะ ที่พราหมณ์คนหนึ่งถวาย ณ ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำอโนมา ที่โคนต้นโพธิ ก่อนจะทรงตรัสรู้สัมมาสัมโพธิญาณ เป็น พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ในคืนนั้น

หนังสือเรียนทางพุทธศาสนา บางเล่มแปลชื่อหญ้ากุสสะ เป็นไทยว่า หญ้าคา ผมว่าไม่ถูก ต้องแปลว่า หญ้าแฝก (Vetiver) จึงจะถูก ก็ลองดูสิว่าใบหญ้าคาของไทยมันคมแค่ไหน ใครจะไปนั่งได้

ที่สำคัญ ในเปเปอร์ของ Rao & Suseela แห่ง สถาบันวิจัยทางพฤกษศาสตร์แห่งชาติ ของอินเดีย ได้กล่าวถึงหญ้าแฝก Vetiveria zizanioides ว่า เรียกว่า หญ้ากาส Khas หรือ กุส Khus ในอินเดีย

เป็นพืชที่พบได้ประจำถิ่นในแถบทางเหนือของอินเดีย ให้กลิ่นหอม ใช้สกัดทำหัวน้ำหอมของราชสำนักในสมัยโบราณ และ ก็ รากของหญ้ากุสสะยังใช้เอามาสานเป็นเสื่อได้ และในอินเดียหน้าร้อน ชาวบ้านจะนิยมใช้หญ้าแฝกถักเป็นม่าน เมื่อพรมน้ำแล้ว ก็ใช้ห้อยลงมาเพื่อลดความร้อนของอากาศในบ้านเรือนได้ ให้ทั้งความเย็น และให้กลิ่นหอมอ่อนๆด้วย

ผมเลยเกิดความคิดต่อไปว่า หรือว่า พราหมณ์ถวายหญ้าแฝกทั้งใบทั้งรากแด่เจ้าชายสิทธัตถะ ไปทรงใช้รองนั่งขัดสมาธิในคืนนั้น น่าจะเป็นไปได้ เพราะใบจะได้ให้กลิ่นที่หอมเย็น และก็เป็นการระบายความร้อนจากก้อนหินที่จะทรงใช้นั่งสมาธิอีกด้วย ผมเดาว่า อาจจะทรงเอาใบรองไว้ด้านล่าง พรมน้ำเสียหน่อยยังได้ ส่วนรากก็เอาไว้รองชั้นบนๆ เรียกว่านั่งเย็นสบาย นอกจากนุ่มอีกต่างหาก

Ecologically unfriendly festival

In the past few years, I have started to feel uneasy about Loy Kratong festival in Thailand. The latest figure in the news confirmed my gut feeling. This year, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration officials have harvested almost a million Kratong floats from river and canals in Bangkok: 946,838 floats as of 3 a.m. today to be exact. (I am amazed that how exact they could have counted those ! I 'll ignore a possibility that they did not miscount a few.) And about 12 % of those are made of styrofoam which is not bio-degradable.

For hundreds of year in Thailand, Loy Kratong festival is a beautiful festival on a December 's full-moon night when people, few thousands I guess, would bring their small floats made of banana leaf, with flowers, lit candle, and incensed stick to beg pardon from angle of the river. It 's a rare traditional good chance for boys to meet girls at night. Nowadays, however, people attending the festival are in the tune of a million, or 3 fold order of magnitude (1000 x) more. So this the the amount of float garbage is now a big environmental burden to the river and needs to be cleaned up by the city within hours after people went home. I often sighed in my thought at this ceremony around this time of the year.

Despite the complain above about it, I have not started complaining of my dislike of another more dangerous floating (into the air) festival yet, called Yipeng floating.

This is memorable calculator for me, 33 years old Casio FX-110 Scientific calculator.
The price I paid in 1977 was 580 Baht. It has 10 blue-color digits and needs AA-size batteries to operate. I remember well that when I used it in an examination room, such as in a Physical Chemistry class, I needed to have spare batteries to replace otherwise it would not last the entire 3 hr exam session. This one was great gadget, because few years earlier students were still using slide rules.

Around that time, I was still a sophomore student and my mom did not have money but I did not know. I told her I badly needed a calculator to use in exams and she had to get money for me somehow. I appreciate her motherly love, just an example of it, and much more now that she long passed away.

ในยุคนี้ มีการออกข่าวลวงกันมากกัน ภาษาฝรั่งเขาเรียกว่า disinformation คนเสพย์ข่าวต้องระวัง เรื่องโกหกมันแยะมาก พบว่าใช้กันมากทั้งในวงการโฆษณา และ วงการเมือง นักการเมืองบางคน ศีลข้อ ๔ ไม่รักษาเลย จิตมีโลภะเป็นตัวนำ เพราะโกหกแล้วได้เงิน แล้วนักข่าวก็ชอบกันจัง ไปสัมภาษณ์ ไม่รู้ว่าโง่หรือว่าโลภอยากได้ข่าวไปลง เขียนเอาไปลงข่าวทั้งๆที่รู้ว่ามันเป็นเรื่องโกหก สงสัยจะโลภอยากได้ข่าวมากกว่า ไม่มีคนนึกถึงคำที่ท่านสอนว่า คนที่โกหกได้นั้น ความชั่วอย่างอื่นๆอีกที่จะทำไม่ได้ เป็นไม่มี นักข่าวไม่สำเหนียกว่า การลงบทสัมภาษณ์ที่เป็นเรื่องโกหก ทั้งๆที่รู้ นั้นตัวเองก็ผิดศีลไปด้วย

และในช่วงปีสองปีหนึ่งมานี่ก็มีอีกวงการหนึ่งเพิ่มขึ้น กล่าวจาบจ้วงผู้บริสุทธิ์ เพราะโลภะและโทสะเป็นตัวนำอีกเช่นกัน ไม่มีความละอายใจ ไม่มีความเกรงกลังต่อบาปกรรม คนอ่านที่มีใจเป็นธรรมก็ต้องปลงสังขารไป และวางอุเบกขา ใครทำกรรม ชั่วหรือดี เขาก็ต้องรับผลไปเอง ส่วนคนอื่นๆในสังคมที่โดนโกหกจนพลอยหลงเชื่อ หากมีจิตเป็นโทสะ และ กิเลสล้นจนแสดงออกมาทาง วาจา และ กาย ก็เป็นการกระทำกรรมหนักเช่นกัน คนผู้ศึกษาธรรมถือว่า กรรมหนักย่อมส่งผลเร็วอย่างแน่นอน

ในสังคมประชาธิปไตย ภายใต้รัฐธรรมนูญ คนไม่ได้มีเสรีภาพที่จะโกหกกับสังคม คนไม่ได้มีเสรีภาพที่จะจงใจละเมิดคนอื่นได้ คนไม่มีเสรีภาพที่จะลุกขึ้นมาทำลายบ้านเมือง แต่ตอนนี้บ้านเมืองไทยหลายปีมานี้ มันมีการปล่อยให้คนบางส่วนทำอย่างนั้น

ไปพักในโรงแรมแห่งหนึ่ง ต่างจังหวัดทางใต้ เห็นว่า มีหนังสือ หนังสือ พระไตรปิฎก ฉบับประชาชน ตอน เฉพาะพระสูตร ที่ กรมการศาสนา สมัยรัฐบาล นายกสุรยุทธ จัดพิมพ์ เอาไว้ในห้องพัก (เผอิญรู้ว่าเจ้าของโรงแรมเป็นลูกศิษย์ครูบาอาจารย์องค์หนึ่ง คือ หลวงปู่เณรคำ ที่ศรีสะเกษ) ก็รู้สึกว่าดี ได้อ่านดูหลายชั่วโมงก่อนนอน ขอชมว่า จัดพิมพ์ด้วยความปราณีตพอควร ตัวโต อ่านง่าย

แต่ขอติหน่อยเหอะ เราก็รู้ๆอยู่ว่า เป็นหนังสือของท่าน อาจารย์ สุชีพ ปุญญานุภาพ ท่านแปลภาษาบาลีจากพระไตรปิฎก ๔๕ เล่ม และย่อความไว้เป็นภาษาไทย และตอนนี้ ท่านผู้แปลและเรียบเรียงเสียชีวิตไปนานแล้ว เข้าใจว่า ลิขสิทธิ์เป็นของ มหามกุฏราชวิทยาลัย
ไม่เห็นมีที่ไหนในหนังสือ ให้ข้อมูลไว้เป็นเกียรติเลยว่าใครเป็นผู้แปลและเรียบเรียงไว้ ผมว่า คนทำ ทำไม่ถูก กรมการศาสนาไม่ให้เกียรตินักวิชาการที่ตายไปแล้วเลย

จากข่าว มีการประมาณค่าเสียหายจากแผ่นดินไหวที่นิวซีแลนด์ ที่มีขนาด ๗ ริกเตอร์ ไว้ที่ประมาณ 1.4 พันล้านเหรียญสหรัฐ คูณเป็นเงินไทยก็ประมาณ 50,000 ล้านบาท สำหรับเมืองที่มีประชากร ๓๕๐๐๐๐ คน

ผมมาคิดต่อว่า กรุงเทพมีประชากรมากกว่านั้น ๒๐ เท่า และดินเป็นดินอ่อน ในอนาคตหากเกิดแผ่นดินไหวในแถวนี้ จะมีความสะเทือนมากกว่า ผมคิดเอาว่า หากคูณ ๒๐ เข้าไป ก็อาจจะเสียหายประมาณ ๑ ล้านล้านบาท

ปัญหาตัวเงินดูเหมือนจะมากมาย แต่ความจริงที่ใหญ่กว่ามันอยู่ที่การกระจุกตัวของทรัพยากรทุกอย่างของประเทศ ศิลปวัฒนธรรม อารยธรรม การศึกษาวิจัย แหล่งความรู้ ข้อมูลทุกอย่าง และหัวใจการสั่งการทุกอย่างของรัฐอยู่ที่กรุงเทพ หากว่าอะไรๆก็เสียหายหมดจากภัยธรรมชาติ ต่อให้มีเงิน ต่อให้มีเครดิตไปกู้มาซ่อมสร้าง ก็จะทำอะไรลำบากมาก อะไรที่เสียไปแล้วจะกู้คืนลำบาก

เหมือนกับเฮติ เกือบปีแล้วคนก็ยังอยู่ในเต้นท์ ไม่มีงาน ไม่มีเงิน ไม่มีน้ำ ไม่มีอาหาร

นี้เป็นเพราะเมืองไทยไม่เหมือนอเมริกา ที่เขาคิดกระจายความเจริญและสิ่งต่างๆไปทั่วประเทศ สมัยช่วงสงครามเย็นเมื่อสี่สิบปีก่อน อเมริกันกลัวการถูกโจมตี จึงต้องมีการกระจายความเสี่ยง ป้องกันการเสียหายของระบบทั้งหมดจากการทำลายโดยอาวุธระยะไกล ทำให้เขามีความอ่อนตัวกับภัยพิบัติอยู่ในตัว แม้แต่ระบบสั่งการเขาก็จัดการทำไว้หมดว่า คนไหนมีอำนาจสั่งการรองลงไปๆหากว่าผู้บริหารระดับสูงไม่เหลือจากการถูกทำลายแล้ว แต่เมืองเราไม่เคยมีการคิดกระจายตัวเรื่องความเจริญออกไว้ก่อน และก็อาจจะไม่มีการทำแผนฉุกเฉินไว้

ผมหวังไว้ในใจว่าจะมีใครบางคนการทำแผนเอาไว้ เพราะอะไรที่มันไม่น่าจะเกิด ดูจากความน่าจะเป็นแล้วน้อยมาก พวกนั้น หากว่าเกิดแล้วผลกระทบมันหนักมาก

Poor man sentenced for selling old CDs in Thailand

From today 's Thai news, a criminal court fined a poor Bangkok garbage collection worker, who scavenged from the garbage piles and sold recovered old CDs on a footpath, over 100,000 Bahts for violating the Movie and VDO Act of B.E. 2551. Since he does not have money he would be imprisoned to pay for fine. (Note: Perhaps at a rate of few hundred Baht daily credit of imprisonment he would be jailed for about a year.) The family of the guy would try to borrow money to bail him out and appeal the sentencing. His family member said he did not know that selling old CDs was against such a law.

Thai people around the web expressed their great sympathy for the unfortunate guy, mentioning any irony that rampant selling of illegal copies of software and multimedia exist in the country and real pirates of CDs & DVDs often don't get caught, but poor innocent ones got caught and punished instead.

I wish the appeal court would re-sentence the guy in a more lenient way.

This Hindi song sounds familiar to Buddhists Worldwide. I have heard it since the 1960s after an Indian movie, Angulimal, which was based on a true story in Tipitaka, was shown in Bangkok. Today I just found that someone has uploaded a new version of this song to Youtube. Anumodhami. If you are Buddhists you might like to listen to it and find it mind soothing.

At Ranong, there is a news reporting that the sea level has increased up to 3 meters and there was flood in many islands and in the areas along sea side.
I beleive that this is likely another sign of global warming.

Above link is toward a Thai article in a Thai magazine, Sarakadee, featuring a prominent conservationists known countrywide for his passion of old stories about Thai art & culture, folk history, people of former generations. Anek Navikamoon, is an author of over 148 books (non-fiction), based entirely on his decades of his detective-like investigations, interviews old people, and photographing in order to record on old stories. He has established a small private museum, House of museums. I admire him. This magazine covered him 20 years ago, and now again 20 years later, with an outstanding award given to him.

If Thailand had more people with exertive passion for worthy things like him, our country would be in much better shape.

Thai malpractice bill draft

Today news from BusinessWeek wrote about the Thai malpractice bill under draft (link given above), with incomplete information, flawed Westerners' viewpoints and far from familiarization with Thai generosity-centric cultural background. To my chagrin, the writer of that news' piece seems to be a Thai. Of course, American readers are that magazine's prime audience, not Thais on the other side of the globe.

I am not a medical practitioner but I have recently heard some of my doctor friends personally voicing their serious disagreement to the current draft under a westerners' model. They said they are being sued already in civil courts once in a while for allegedly giving insufficient care to some demanding patients without this draft law in effect yet. This draft law would make them quit their jobs for they are already fed up with some of those greedy people.

From what I read in Thai newspapers, I don't like the current draft version which will open up a much bigger pandora box of American style law suits against doctors, nurses, assistant medical staff, emergency aid-workers, any passer-by who helped accident victims, etc.

I agree that there should be a law to help some people. But a new version of the bill must make it less likely to be exploited by some bad persons who will likely exploits loopholes on the system for personal financial gains and wreak havoc on the kindness of Thai society. Thai health workers often give free medical assistants, or just for 30 Baht (< $1 USD) a visit charge for a government hospital treatment of any diseases including AIDS (i.e. expensive drugs), they could be naively sued for anything if patients are not satisfied. A non-technical committee proposed in the draft to look into the claims will have no medical experience to deal with those claims. In the current draft bill, doctors, aid-workers and emergency help volunteers will be practically treated as guilty unless proven otherwise later. The system may pay to the claimants upfront, regardless of the validity of the claims. The claimants can still sue in a civil court on top of their getting compensation from this new system. So it will be double whammy for any claimants.

This present draft is discouraging for medical workers in Thailand. In the end, everyone in Thailand will suffer. Helps of good heart will be gone from the Thai society, only financial gains will be the essence. Everyone will sue for their right to get paid. I for one, will not stop my car by to help any accident victims on the road.

Thai people smart enough have been fed up with too many free items given by Thai governments to buy votes for their parties already:- e.g. some free-bus, free-train, free-eletricity (to a level), free water supple (to a level), cheap free medical healthcares. (We also shoulder over 1 million illegal immigrant workers and war-refugees on their medical costs). We are already using our children's money to pay for our "extravaganza" today.

Bangkok's new place for contemplation

Bangkok has a new public "garden", Buddhadhasa Archive, also known as Suan Mokh of Bangkok, locating at the Railways Garden, near Chatuchak Park. It 's aimed to be a place where people can come to meditate, study works of Buddhadharsa Bhikku. This place was made possible by volunteers and public donations. There will also be weekly Yoga course and music shows from Mahidol University College of Music as well. In addition to Buddhists, people of all faiths are welcomed.

Luncheon with teachers

Once a year, our high school class would organize a luncheon with our former teachers at different exotic places in and around Bangkok. This year we set the venue at Dusit Thani hotel, on the top floor restaurant. It 's a nice atmosphere and feeling. Many of my teachers were anxiously waiting for this luncheon, for at their age, it 's not often that they would go out of their homes for social activity. Some of our former teaches who had came to our luncheon in the previous years can not come anymore, for ever. I believe it is a show of good spirit of our alumni who wanted to share our energetic appreciation to our teachers in their post-retirement life. Our teachers also showed their loving care to us with their concern and inquiry about our health, or family. The event reminded us of old fond memories almost 40 years ago.

During the luncheon, our class also invited a very famous Thai singer, Mr. Suthep, over to give his genuine 60s - 70s vocal. His voice is still very good. Comparing his natural and charming style to the current style sung by teenage singers we commonly encounter nowadays, I feel the latter style quite unnaturally over-pretending and too much exertion, trying to westernize their vocal of Thai song, and I don't like that.

This is an unusual men 's restroom on the 22nd floor of Dusit Thani Hotel in Bangkok. Four decades ago, this was on the top floor of the tallest building in Bangkok. It looks funny, giving a strange airy feeling for users. Some people said they did not feel like using it.
I also discovered that a familiar Bangkok skyline view of Sukhumvit road from Lumbini park I had seen were likely taken from a window from this location.

Thai capital should be planned to move within the next decade

In this VDO, dated February 2010, a famous Thai scientist, Dr. Arj-Ong Jumsai Na Ayutthaya, suggested that the Thai capital be moved, to escape from encroaching sea level that will cause future problem for the city's clean water supply. A good location for the new capital should be on a plateau of at least 100 meters above a mean sea level and has no geological fault line in the area. He urged that the city be moved within 10 years. He cited a location in North East, perhaps in an area near Korat as an example.

I think so far politicians have not heard his advise yet.

Good Non-fiction European VDO series

Now it is raining daily in Thailand and I found that I prefer to exercise by biking in my home office rather than getting wet outside. While doing so, I used to listen to iPod (Dhamma talks more frequently than classical music), or reading non-fiction books. Now I switched over to watched VDOs from my MacbookPro via Miro open-source and free software. Miro is a great software, esp. some of the links given are good.

I like to watch one series in particular, weekly English excerpt of Euromaxx, a German series about culture, designs, music, arts, lifestyle. I think this program opened my eyes a lot. There are over a hundred downloadable episodes, so far, I think I have watched only half of them. But each episode gave me useful ideas. If I were younger, or just a college kid, I would rather grow up wanting to be a designer, or an architect or an artist, and life might be less boring than this. I wish some Thai kids watched this program for they would have more creativity in their heads after they grow up.

I just found a website collecting nice pictures of beautiful bookshelves and bookstacks; linked here. That 's a nice website for bookworms, like me. So I feel a knack to put up an old picture of one of my bookshelves at home in my blog too.

I think I have a couplel thousand books in several bookshelves around the house. But they are scattered in many rooms, as well as in a smaller house behind my main house too. It would be a dream to put them together and form a nice home library. But I am running out of time and can not do that as I 'd love to.

ช่วงนี้ฝนตกตอนค่ำๆ ออกกำลังกายนอกบ้านไม่สะดวก ก็เลยออกกำลังกายด้วยการปั่นจักรยานอยู่กับที่ในห้องทำงาน ใน โฮมออฟฟิส ที่บ้าน มีแอร์ด้วย แต่กระนั้นก็เหงื่อออกโซ่กไป

ก่อนหน้านี้ผมมักจะอ่านหนังสือทั่วไป สารคดีวิทยาศาสตร์บ้าง นิยายธรรมะบ้าง ต่อมาก็สลับ ไปดูวีดิโอ จาก Miro บนเครื่องโน้ตบุ้คบ้าง ฟัง mp3 บ้างจากไอทูนบ้าง (ไอพ๊อดมันเจ๊งไปแล้วไม่อยากซื้อตัวที่สาม)

ระยะหลังนี้กลับมาฟังเทศน์หลวงพ่อฤาษีลิงดำบ่อยๆ ท่านจิตโตบ้าง หลวงพี่เล็กบ้าง บ่อยๆ ก็เลยนึกอยากไปบ้านซอยสายลม วันเสาร์ที่ผ่านมาก็เลยได้ไปที่นั่น ไปได้หนังสือมาหลายเล่ม ราคาไม่แพง ส่วนมากเล่มละไม่เกิน ๕๐ บาท ซื้อมาดูเหมือนจะ ๕ เล่ม ยังไม่ถึง ๒๐๐ บาทเลย จากนั้นก็ไปถวายสังฆทานหลวงพี่เล็ก และกราบถามปัญหากัมมัฏฐานจากท่าน ที่แถวอนุสาวรีย์ชัยฯ ท่านก็เมตตาตอบให้แบบตรงใจทีเดียว ไม่เคยเจอองค์จริงท่าน เคยเห็นแต่ในรูป หรือฟัง mp3 เจอท่านผมคิดว่าผิวพรรณท่านผ่องใสมากเลย

ประเด็นสำคัญที่จะพูดก็คือ ตอนนี้กำลังอ่านหนังสือเรื่อง "ล่าพระอาจารย์ และ ล่องเชียงแสน" อยู่ ๒ เรื่องในเล่มเดียวกัน เพลินดีมาก สนุกมาก เป็นการถอดเทปหลวงพ่อฤาษีลิงดำ มา บางตอนผมคิดว่าก็เคยอ่านมาแล้วสมัยหลายสิบปีก่อน ได้กลับมาอ่านเป็นเรื่องราวอีกที ความรู้ความเข้าใจเปลี่ยนไป เรามีความคิดอ่านสุขุมมากขึ้นตามวัย(ชรา) อ่านไปได้สักครึ่งเล่มก็เท่ากับปั่นจักรยานได้ ๑ ชม.พอดี เท่ากับระยะทางสัก ๑๓ กม. หรือ เผาพลังงานได้สัก ๕๐๐ แคลอรี่ ก็วางลง แล้ววันต่อไปก็มาอ่านต่อ เมื่อวานไม่ได้อ่านเพราะไปดูวีดีโอ ดร.สนอง บรรยายธรรมะถวายพระบวชใหม่ ดาวน์โหลดมาจากเว็บ หนังสือเล่มนั้น วันนี้ก็ยังอ่านไม่จบเล่มนี้

โดยเฉพาะอ่านในครึ่งเล่มหลัง ตอน ล่องเชียงแสน ผมได้ไอเดียอะไรกระฉูดแยะมาก โดยเฉพาะเรื่องการเมือง เรื่องการทะเลาะของคนในชาติ สิ่งที่หลวงพ่อเทศน์ท่านไว้เมื่อราว พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๘ ไม่ล้าสมัย ปัญหาก็คือ คนรุ่นใหม่จะแทบไม่มีทางเอาหนังสือดีๆแบบนี้มาอ่าน แล้วจะคนไทยได้ปัญญาที่ไหน สิ่งหนึ่งที่ผมได้คิดจากอ่านคำเทศน์ของท่านในตอนนี้ก็คือ การปกครองในระบอบพ่อปกครองลูกของไทยสมัยสุโขทัยนั้น ผมเพิ่งซึ้งใจจากคำเทศน์ของหลวงพ่อนี้เอง ก่อนหน้านี้เรียนมาต้งแต่เป็นเด็กนักเรียน ๔๐ ปีก่อนก็ไม่เก็ท ตอนนี้ผมเพิ่งเก็ทแล้วว่า ระบอบพ่อปกครองลูกก็คือระบอบประชาธิปไตยของไทยเดิมเรานั่นเอง เพราะพระมหากษัตริย์สุโขทัยหรือแม้แต่เชียงแสน ท่านทรงเป็นพ่อเมือง และสมัยนั้นท่านทรงลงไปเยือนราษฎรแต่ละครั้งๆในฐานะพ่อเมือง เป็นกันเอง แต่งองค์ธรรมดาเหมือนชาวบ้าน ซึ่งก็คือเป็นการทำ caucus หรือ ประชาพิจารณ์ กับพสกนิกรโดยตรงเป็นประจำนั่นเอง

ผมเข้าใจอย่างถ่องแท้เลยว่า การปกครองระบบประชาธิปไตยที่ไทยเราไปลอกฝรั่งมาเกือบทั้งดุ้นตอนนี้มันใช้ไม่ดี เพราะปล่อยให้คนไม่ดี คนไม่มีศีล จำนวนมากเข้ามาหาประโยชน์จากอำนาจรัฐ เข้ามาป่วนเพื่อชิงอำนาจรัฐ เข้ามามีอำนาจออกกฎหมายตามอำเพอใจเพื่อผลประโยชน์ส่วนตน เข้ามาเบียดบังงบประมาณหลวงเข้ากระเป๋าของตนและพวกพ้อง คนที่ไม่ดี สามารถโกหกหน้าด้านๆแบบไม่มีหิริโอตตัปปะ ไม่มีความเลวอะไรอื่นอีกที่ทำไม่ได้ เข้ามาในระบอบนี้แยะมาก

ทุกอย่างมีเหตุปัจจัย ผมไม่อยากให้จิตผมมันดิ้นไปมาก แม้แต่ข่าวเรื่องพวกเขมรพมารุกล้ำชายแดนก็ตาม พยายามปล่อยวาง ทุกเรื่องเป็นเรื่องชั่วคราว อย่าไปเครียดกับมัน ปล่อยธรรมชาติจัดการ สมดุลย์จะมาเอง ผมเชื่ออย่างนั้นจริงๆ

กลับจากด่านช้าง ขากลับแวะตลาดสามชุกร้อยปี ซื้อของกินเป็นส่วนใหญ่ เพื่อนและอาจารย์บางท่านได้ของเล่นโบราณติดมือไปด้วย ก็เรืือป๊อกแป๊กที่เห็นอยู่ในตู้ในรูปล่างสุดนั่นแหละ เป็นของทำย้อนยุคให้นึกถึง เมื่อสมัยเด็กๆ ผมเองเมื่อสี่สิบปีกว่าก่อนจำได้ว่าวันหนึ่งพ่อผมไปซื้อมาให้เล่น วิธีเล่นคือต้องจุดเทียนใส่ไว้ แล้วเอาไปลอยน้ำ อากาศร้อนมันก็จะไหลเวียนออกมาทางปลายท่อใต้ระดับน้ำที่ท้ายเรื่อ ขับดันให้เรือเล่นไปในน้ำได้ เจ้าของร้านเล่าว่า เขาส่งไปปั๊มตัวเรือจากเมืองจีน ทำเหมือนของเดิมเป๊ะ ลำละหนึ่งร้อยบาท ตัวผมไม่ได้ซื้อมาเพราะกำลังลด ละ เลิก สิ่งต่างๆอยู่

เพื่อนที่เป็นคนท้องถิ่นเล่าว่า ชาวบ้านเสียดายที่ว่าการอำเภอเก่าเป็นไม้สักทั้งหลัง แต่หลายปีก่อนนักการเมืองจัดการให้มีการประมูลเพื่อสร้างที่ว่าการอำเภอใหม่เป็นคอนกรีต และพ่อค้้าประมูลไม้ไปในราคาแค่ ๕ แสนบาท ตอนนี้ก็กำลังวางแผนจะทุบทิ้งอีกแล้ว เพื่อทำลานจอดรถแทน สันดานนักการเมืองพวกนี้หางานทำผลาญงบอยู่เรื่อยๆ

วันนี้พวกเราไปงานพระราชทานเพลิงศพอดีตอาจารย์ประจำชั้นของพวกเราสมัยเรียนสวนกุหลาบ เมื่อ ๓๘ ปีก่อน ที่ นิคมกระเสียว อ.ด่านช้าง จ. สุพรรณบุรี

Thai classical music CD store

Today, I went to JJ Mall to look around for a Siam Melody store, on the second floor near the food court. I found information about it from the web. I was looking to buy some Thai classical music CDs. They are not-so-popular among the teens but for older people, like me, they are great. As such, there are only legal copies of them, might be found at rare locations, which is good for music label owners for there is virtually no "piracy" of the content into "ghost" CDs. It is also good for customers to get good quality copy of the CDs. I did not want to simply order what I wanted from the web, but I wanted to inspect what are available at the store myself, besides I did not want to wait for merchandises in the mail.

I ended up getting some CDs of Thai classical (traditional) music instrument solo I wanted, and also for some Thai music in the 60s. They are priced very cheap, some 100-150 Baht each. I think I like Thai music in the 60s because that is the kind of music I grew up hearing from my mom's radio daily at that time. These days, I can't tolerate "modern" music for young kids, and I feel dreadful of modern singers' "Thai-lish" (i.e. Thai + English) vocal style.

Earthquake clouds

On Monday 31, early morning, I looked up the sky from my Bangkok home and saw small ribbed pattern of clouds facing southwest. I knew that it 's getting tremors from earthquake. That night, a lot of people in Bangkok reported of their spotting that same clouds but there was no news of an earthquake. Not until Tuesday June 1, when there was a news of a 6.7 scale earthquake in Andaman sea, southwest direction from Bangkok. We did not feel the tremor in Bangkok. Interestingly, I think the cloud is a sure warning sign of an impending earthquake. I have spotted this coincidence twice already.

เมื่อวานเป็นวันวิสาขบูชา วันเพ็ญขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำเดือน ๖ เป็นวันคล้ายวันประสูติ ตรัสรู้ ปรินิพพาน ของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า โพสต์ช้าไป ๑ วัน

คนไทยในเมืองส่วนมากคงไม่ค่อยได้ทำอะไร บางคนอาจจะไปช้อปปิ้ง บางคนที่งานยุ่งๆก็ไปเคลียร์งานที่ทำงานแม้จะเป็นวันหยุด บางคนก็ถือโอกาสใช้ลองวีคเอ็นไปเที่ยวต่างจังหวัด

คงมีคนไทยพุทธส่วนน้อยที่ไม่ได้แค่ถือพุทธตามทะเบียนบ้าน จะใช้โอกาสที่เป็นมงคลนี้ในการฝึกกายและใจ เพื่อเรียนรู้ความจริงของชีวิต โดยการปฏิบัติธรรม สมถภาวนา และ วิปัสสนาภาวนา ฟังธรรมเทศนาของพระสุปฏิปันโน

เรื่องศีล ๕ ไม่ต้องพูด เพราะเป็นพื้นฐานของมนุษย์อยู่แล้ว มนุษย์แปลว่าผู้มีจิตใจสูง ถ้าขณะใดคนใดไม่มีศีลช่วงน้ันจิตใจของคนนั้นก็ไม่ดีพอ โอกาสพิเศษแบบนี้จึงสมควรถือศีล ๘ หากทำได้

- A Mac and a broadband connection to upload the content
- ISBN for all the titles
- the format must be in ePub and must pass validation by Epubcheck software version 1.0.5
and
- US Tax ID ( I see that, at this time, people in other countries can not apply yet)
- valid iTune account, with credit card info on file

Apple also say that they don't pay to partners (authors) until an earning threshold is reached in each territory. (Wow. This means that if a manuscript can not sell well you won't get pay.) So I expect that individual lesser known author should not sell there, unless you have a large number of titles in the collection to get substantial sale.

This is for a Mac platform, mind you.
Naturally, Safari comes bundled with OS-X. So it is not surprising that most people use it. But are there other reasons ?

There are a number of other browsers, notably Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Flock, for examples, to choose.
I noticed that many alternative browsers have strong points in some areas and I 'd love to use others for a number of reasons. Safari is very good, but other browsers have some better points in some areas. Firefox has some neat functional plugins I like. Chrome is very elegant and fast. Alas, they still have shortcomings, not due to their fault, but do to the Mac's operating system's. I think most Mac users use a lot of Spotlight search function. I do anyway. Spotlight would index all the content in the Mac. Right ? However, in case of non-Safari browsers, as far as I can see, Spotlight does not index the webpages loaded into those alternative browsers, nor does it recognize bookmarks kept in those browsers. Spotlight only indexes the history of loaded webpages and bookmarks kept in Safari. So, I can see that anyone who choose to use other browsers rather than Safari would be crippled of the index service by Spotlight. So, that is the reason why I still use Safari in the Mac as the main browser.

การเจรจากับระบอบปกครองเผด็จการที่ตัดสินใจโดยไม่มีเหตุผลดูไม่น่าเป็นทางเลือกที่ดีนัก แต่สำหรับประเทศที่เกี่ยวข้อง ก็คงผลัดไปก่อนดีกว่า ยังไม่อยากเสี่ยงตายวันนี้ อะไรแบบนั้น

เศรษฐกิจโลกผูกกันหมดตอนนี้ เกิดสงครามเมื่อไรก็กระเทือนทุกประเทศ รวมถึงไทยด้วย

I got a link from a friend. The current main article there, in Thai, tells a small nice story of a Thai with a good heart who bought snacks to distribute to soldiers guarding a location during the time of unrest in Bangkok. An overheard coffee vendor near the snack stall also joined the goodwill by preparing free coffee for them in plastic bags.

ผมรู้สึกง่วงๆ ก็รู้สึกว่าต้องการหาเพลงมาร์ชฟัง และเพลงมาร์ชที่ผมฟังแล้วไม่เบื่อ ก็คือ มาร์ช ชมพูฟ้า ของ สวนกุหลาบวิทยาลัย ฟังแล้วกระชุ่มกระชวย แอ็คทีฟ ฟังมา ๓๙ ปีแล้ว ปีหน้าจะครบ ๔๐ปี

ไม่รู้จะไปฟังที่ไหน เสอร์ชกูเกิลก็เลยเห็นว่าที่เว็บของโรงเรียนมีให้ฟัง แต่เอ็มเบ็ดไว้ อยากได้ ก็เลยต้องเปิดดู ซอร์สโค้ดของเว็บเพจอันนั้น และก็มองหาตำแหน่งที่เก็บแฟ้มเพลง ที่เว็บมาสเตอร์พยายามซ่อนไว้ (โทษนะน้อง พี่ขอเหอะนะ) แล้วผมก็เลยดูดเอาเพลงมาจากเว็บของโรงเรียนมาไว้ในไอทูนในเครื่อง MacbookPro i7 ของผม (โดยความขอบคุณ)

(เทคนิคการก๊อปไฟล์แบบนี้ใช้ได้สำหรับก๊อปรูปจากเว็บที่เจ้าของเขาซ่อนไว้ด้วยเหมือนกัน บางทีเขาซ่อนเล่นเอาไว้ใต้อีกรูปหนึ่งที่เป็นภาพโปร่งใส คนก็เลยก๊อปไม่ได้ด้วยวิธีธรรมดา)

จากเว็บของโรงเรียน ผมก็เลยเพิ่งเห็นว่า โรงเรียนอายุครบ ๑๒๘ ปีแล้ว และตึกยาวอายุจะครบ ๙๙ ปี ก็เลย ก๊อบโลโก้มาอีก (เอ จะเข้าข่าย อทินนาทานไหมเนี่ย) มาโพสต์ไว้เนี่ย ฝรั่งเขาเรียกว่า มิเรอร์ คงไม่เป็นไรเนาะ ถือว่าช่วยประชาสัมพันธ์

Internal peace via Vipassana

Amid external turmoils, internal feeling could be peaceful.

Consciousness meditation, Vipassana, is the Buddhist technique to attain peacefulness inside. Meditator has to disengage the mind from the body. The mind can be further unassembled into Vedhana (the feeling of happiness or unhappiness), Sanya (memory, thinking, comparing), Sangkhara (others). Upon doing so, the selfness disappear, so long as the consciousness remains. It will be clearly seen that selfness or ego is an illusion, not real. "You" don't really exist in the ultimate sense. So when "You" don't exist, there is nobody to actually suffer. Therefore external turmoils are separate entities that have nothing to do with the neutral observer.

By the way, I just also found recently that there was a recent google talk VDO about using this technique to relieve stresses. I have not watched it though, although I have already downloaded it via Miro. It looks like some westerners started to pick up this Buddhist ultimate gem. However, let me add that this technique is to take "you" to Nirvana, not only to let go the stresses just temporarily.

อ่านไปได้ไม่เท่าไร ก็เลยไปตามดู Youtube ที่ คากุ พูด ตามไปที่เว็บของเขา แล้วก็สนใจ ทฤษฎีสตริง ว่ามันอธิบายง่ายๆได้ยังไง ก็ไปเจอวีดีโอที่ TED เกี่ยวกับ ทฤษฎีสตริง Brian Greene พูดดีมากๆเลย

Bangkok situation

Most people living in Bangkok want the violent protest by the red-shirt people to end quickly. The nation's economy has been crippled for the past 2 months after the anti-government movement was signaled to launch the ultimate "demonstration". It has been estimated that economic losses were already in the range of over 70 billion Bahts, and might cost even more.

It has been known that the pro-convicted camp has prepared armed resurrection plan nationwide for years. Unfortunately, the Thai government did not take any action to prevent it in the recent past, or perhaps it lacked sufficient number of cooperating officials and officers to do what is morally right. Many people in the anti-government camp were believed to have been fed with money from some masterminds. Leadership of the protestors have shown that they are willing to risk the lives of women and children they cajoled into their human shields, while preparing fighters armed with M79 grenade launchers and other war weapons, including those captured from soldiers last month. Corrupted people caught last month for manufacturing grenade launchers as well as trying to deliver M79 grenades to their clients were just tips of the icebergs for the social split inside the country at the moment. Yesterday, a car bomb wired in the Southern Thailand style was found. This is a serious warning sign that Southern terrorists are moving in to join the chaos in Bangkok.

There is an additional irony, some prominent persons have called for all sides to cease fire and resume negotiation, knowingly that they do not want peace to actually happen until they get victory.

I try to use Buddhist practice of feeling neutral of what 's happening now, yet I can't help siding with the morally right ones. I have confident that the morally right side will win. I wish peace can be restored soon by soldiers and masterminds for the riots are brought to justice. However, the toll toward Thailand's political stabilization and peace will be sadly high. And political division will remain for years to come.

Everyone has his Karma, and consequences. Everything has its start, it has its end. I now just try to be an observer (in Buddhist sense). This evening, I hope I can still go to attend my evening Abhidhamma class.

Hot sea water in Andaman sea off shore from Ranong

News from Thailand Channel 7 reported an unusual phenomenon called "boiling sea water" off the coast of Ranong reported by fishermen where there were bubbling coming up from the Andaman sea floor and a large number of fish were found dead, some floating on the sea surface while bigger ones submerged to the sea bed.

There was an early speculation that it could be due to subterranean heat coming out from cracks on the sea bed.

Interesting free software for literature tracking by author names

I just discovered this neat free software tool for scientists by chance. It is called myPeers. It allow you to follow publications from scientists or authors you are interested to follow as their papers are indexed by Google Scholar. I suspect that for very up-to-date preprints or very new papers coming out, one might need to check out literature databases directly. However, if you are not too serious about getting the latest papers, then this tool could fulfill the job well.

I just thought of the venerable Phra Phromkunaporn (Payut A. Payutto Bhikku), among the most knowledgeable Buddhist monks and scholars, and checked out his website. Surely, there is a list of some 547 of his books. Most of these are available in PDF format as e-books. Good stuff. Link given above.

อ่านเจอจากข่าวว่าวันนี้ เปเปอร์ออกมาในวารสาร Science รายงานเรื่อง จีโนมของคนโบราณ นีแอนเดอทัล

พบว่า ในชาวยุโรปและเอเชีย มีสัดส่วนของจีโนมของ คนนีแอนเดอทัล อยู่ประมาณ 4% แสดงว่า มีการผสมข้ามพันธุ์กันในอดีต คาดว่าคงเกิดขึ้นในช่วง 50,000 ปีที่ผ่านมา เพราะบรรพบุรุษคนรุ่นใหม่ ออกมาจากอัฟริกาในราวๆนั้น

เคยอ่านเจอจากเว็บเป็นปีแล้ว มีคนเขียนไว้ เสนอว่าบอกว่า คนในปัจจุบัน เป็นผลจากการที่มนุษย์ต่างดาว เอามนุษย์โบราณไปดัดแปลงพันธุกรรม ให้มีความฉลาดเฉลียวมากขึ้น

การอ่านเรื่องจากเว็บ ต้องไม่ไปซีเรียสมาก เพราะมีเรื่องโกหกแยะมาก

อย่างไรก็ดี ผมก็เห็นว่า ในระยะเวลาเพียงไม่กี่หมื่นปี คนปัจจุบันมีวิวัฒนาการเร็วมากจนเหลือเชื่อ หากเปรียบเทียบรหัสดีเอ็นเอของคนกับลิงชิมแปนซีแล้ว ก็คล้ายกันมาก ดูเหมือนจะ 99% ถ้าจำไม่ผิด วิวัฒนาการอย่างรวดเร็วนี้ดูน่าเร็วมากๆจริงๆ ทำให้คนไม่ใช่สัตว์เดรัจฉาน

e-book is going to be a big business in the next few months onward. I am not sure of Thai people are aware of this, but it has been felt around the World for the past one month immediately after the recent launch of Apple's iPad in the US.

iPad has revolutionized a book and magazine publishing industry from paper-based into online digital media. Google will set up Google Edition in the coming months as a market place to sell e-books. Initial offerning could be in the range of half a million books available. (I suppose mostly in English.) Murdock's News Corp will set up an online store similar to iTune soon. They plan to sell e-books, e-magazines, and likely music, movies, TV programs, too. I think it is a great opportunity for small people to think of setting up small one or two person publication house. People who are not programmers don't need App developing skill in order to get some income from new handheld devices. But I think most people can write, I mean type, and they can produce contents they have expertise in. They have now chance to join this e-content boom.
